Book Synopsis Identity, Ritual, and Power in Colonial Puebla by : Frances L. Ramos
Download or read book Identity, Ritual, and Power in Colonial Puebla written by Frances L. Ramos and published by University of Arizona Press. This book was released on 2012-09-27 with total page 287 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Located between Mexico City and Veracruz, Puebla has been a political hub since its founding as Puebla de los Ángeles in 1531. Frances L. Ramos’s dynamic and meticulously researched study exposes and explains the many (and often surprising) ways that politics and political culture were forged, tested, and demonstrated through public ceremonies in eighteenth-century Puebla, colonial Mexico’s “second city.” With Ramos as a guide, we are not only dazzled by the trappings of power—the silk canopies, brocaded robes, and exploding fireworks—but are also witnesses to the public spectacles through which municipal councilmen consolidated local and imperial rule. By sponsoring a wide variety of carefully choreographed rituals, the municipal council made locals into audience, participants, and judges of the city’s tumultuous political life. Public rituals encouraged residents to identify with the Roman Catholic Church, their respective corporations, the Spanish Empire, and their city, but also provided arenas where individuals and groups could vie for power. As Ramos portrays the royal oath ceremonies, funerary rites, feast-day celebrations, viceregal entrance ceremonies, and Holy Week processions, we have to wonder who paid for these elaborate rituals—and why. Ramos discovers and decodes the intense debates over expenditures for public rituals and finds them to be a central part of ongoing efforts of councilmen to negotiate political relationships. Even with the Spanish Crown’s increasing disapproval of costly public ritual and a worsening economy, Puebla’s councilmen consistently defied all attempts to diminish their importance. Ramos innovatively employs a wealth of source materials, including council minutes, judicial cases, official correspondence, and printed sermons, to illustrate how public rituals became pivotal in the shaping of Puebla’s complex political culture.

Book Synopsis The Provincial Deputation in Mexico by : Nettie Lee Benson
Download or read book The Provincial Deputation in Mexico written by Nettie Lee Benson and published by University of Texas Press. This book was released on 2014-05-16 with total page 240 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Mexico and the United States each have a constitution and a federal system of government. This fact has led many historians to assume that the Mexican system of government, established in the 1820s, is an imitation of the U.S. model. But it is not. In this interpretation of the independence movement, Nettie Lee Benson tells the true story of Mexico's transition from colonial status to a federal state. She traces the Mexican government's beginning to events in Spain in 1808–1810, when provincial juntas, or deputations, were established to oppose Napoleon's French rule and govern the country during the Spanish monarch's imprisonment. These provincial deputations proved so popular that ultimately they became the established form of government throughout the provinces of Spain and its New World dominions. It was the provincial deputation, not the United States federal system, that provided the model for the state legislative bodies that were eventually formed after Mexico won its independence from Spain in 1821. This finding—the result of years of painstaking archival research—strongly confirms the independence of Mexico's political development from U.S. influence. Its importance to a study of Mexican history cannot be overstated.
Book Synopsis Mexico, Slavery, Freedom by : Pablo Miguel Sierra Silva
Download or read book Mexico, Slavery, Freedom written by Pablo Miguel Sierra Silva and published by Hackett Publishing. This book was released on 2024-03-20 with total page 376 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: “Through its rich and fascinating collection of documents, Mexico, Slavery, Freedom offers a much-needed window into Mexico’s long history of slavery that will leave readers wanting to learn and discover more. Sierra Silva brilliantly guides his readers through the maze of Mexican archival resources. . . . Through his careful content curation, readers will discover how corruption and discrimination led to persistent enslavement of indigenous Mesoamerican and transpacific peoples despite royal orders to abolish the practice. . . . The rich, detailed-packed introductions--to the book in general and to each chapter--are nonetheless succinct and to the point. Sierra Silva’s . . . editorial approach proves that information and interpretative points are better served in small portions. The documents themselves are the main course. Sierra Silva also recognizes the importance of giving readers both English and Spanish versions of each document in the book. These bilingual transcriptions make Mexico, Slavery, Freedom an equally valuable resource for course instruction in predominantly English-speaking environments, bilingual classrooms, and Spanish-centered courses.” —Mariana Dantas, Ohio University This is the first volume to provide, in dual-language format, selections from primary texts related to the experiences of enslaved Africans, Asians, and their descendants in colonial Mexico.
