Book Synopsis The History of the Qur'ān by : Shehzad Saleem
Download or read book The History of the Qur'ān written by Shehzad Saleem and published by . This book was released on 2019 with total page 1275 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Qur'an was reveled in parts. It was after this piecemeal revelation that its parts were given a new arrangement and then the collected whole was transmitted to the later generations. A number of illustrious scholars in the past have undertaken to write down this collection and transmission history of the Qur'ān. What then is the need to revisit and synthesize this history in the wake of these studies? In the humble opinion of this writer, the answer to this question is that most previous works on this topic have been marred by three flaws and hence occasioned this study. The fisrt flaw is that the collection history of the Qur'ān has generaly been compiled only on the basis of historical reports found in Ḥadīth anthologies. Seldom was this collection history based on the account of the Qur'̄an itself on it collection. The second flaw is that tools of historical criticism have not always been fully employed to evaluate the content acquired from Ḥadīth anthologies on the collection of the Qur'ān. The resut is that, at times, far-reaching conclusions have been drawn from data that is of questionable reliability. The third flaw is that the readings of the Qur'ān transmitted by tentative (dhannī) menas have been regarded acceptable along with its reading transmitted by certain (qaṭ'ī) means against the verdict of the Qur'ān itself. In this way, both have been equated and the distinction between the two has become extremely blurred if not totally forgotten.... The objectives of this study are to (i) synthesize the collection and transmission history of the Qur'ān on the basis of the Qur'ān and established historical sources. (ii) critically evaluate the accounts of the Qur'ān's collection and other related content mentioned in Ḥadīth anthologies using tools of historical criticism. The reader will find the second of the above objectives spanning the greater part of the study because its content is plentiful and needs paintaking reevaluation. This critique constitutes Section 1 (Chapters 1 to 17) of this study. The synthesis is attempted in Secion 2 (Chapters 1 and 2). -- from Introduction.

Book Synopsis The Anthologist’s Art by : Bilal Orfali
Download or read book The Anthologist’s Art written by Bilal Orfali and published by BRILL. This book was released on 2016-11-14 with total page 291 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Why did premodern authors in the Arabic-Islamic culture compile literary anthologies, and why were these works remarkably popular? How can an anthology that consists of reproduced material be original and creative, and serve various literary and political ends? How did anthologists select their material, then record and arrange it? This book examines the life and works of Abū Manṣūr al-Thaʿālibī (350–429/961–1039), an eminent anthologist from Nīshāpūr, paying special attention to his magnum opus, Yatīmat al-dahr (The Unique Pearl), and its sequel, Tatimmat al-Yatīma (The Completion of the Yatīma). This book is a direct window on to an anthologist’s workshop in the second half of the fourth/tenth century. It examines the methodological consciousness expressed in Thaʿālibī’s selection and arrangement, and his sophisticated system of internal references and cross-references to other works; how he selected from his contemporaries’ oeuvres; how he sought, recorded, memorized, misplaced, and sometimes lost or forgot his selections; how he scrutinized the authenticity of material, accepting, questioning, or rejecting its attribution; and the errors and inconsistencies that resulted from this process.
Book Synopsis The Influence of Translation on the Arabic Language by : Mohamed Siddig Abdalla
Download or read book The Influence of Translation on the Arabic Language written by Mohamed Siddig Abdalla and published by Cambridge Scholars Publishing. This book was released on 2018-10-19 with total page 248 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book explores the influence of translation on the Arabic language, with particular emphasis on the translation of English idioms by journalists working at Arabic satellite TV stations, using a mixed-method approach (quantitative and qualitative). It begins from a belief that the impact of broadcast media on Arabic speakers is more instant, wider and farther-reaching than that caused or triggered by any other branch of mass media, as not all features of television appear in other media. The book focuses on idioms because of the difficulties associated with translating them, and also because the literature review revealed inadequacy in understanding this intriguing part of the development of the Arabic language. In contrast to other similar titles, the book examines the possible factors causing journalists to resort to idiom literalisation, including those relating to demographic characteristics. The main significance of this book is that it has practical implications for its potential audience, both practitioners and professional peers. It provides information to enable media translators and lexicographers to become more sensitive towards the logico-semantic relationships present in idiomatic expressions, and to improve their application of idiomatic expressions in their translations. Overall, the results presented here will serve to guide media translators and lexicographers’ choice in the usage of idioms to produce better quality translations and dictionaries. This insight is important not only to translators and lexicographers, but also to language teachers and students of translation. Pedagogically, the findings of the current book will encourage translation teachers to reconsider their strategies for teaching English idioms. Students of translation and English language learners in general will also benefit from the results of this book.

Book Synopsis Making the Modern Turkish Citizen by : Özge Baykan Calafato
Download or read book Making the Modern Turkish Citizen written by Özge Baykan Calafato and published by Bloomsbury Publishing. This book was released on 2022-01-27 with total page 257 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Featuring over 100 colour images, this book explores the photographic self-representations of the urban middle classes in Turkey in the 1920s and the 1930s. Examining the relationship between photography and gender, body, space as well as materiality and language, its six chapters explore how the production and circulation of vernacular photographs contributed to the making of the modern Turkish citizen in the formative years of the Turkish Republic, when nation-building, secularization and modernization reforms took centre stage. Based on an extensive photographic archive, the book shows that individuals actively reproduced, circulated and negotiated the ideal citizen-image imposed by the Kemalist regime, reflecting not only state-imposed directives but also their class aspirations and other, wider social and cultural developments of the period, from Western fashion trends and movies to the increasing availability of modern consumer items. Calafato also reveals that the freedom from state control afforded by personal cameras allowed the desired image to be sometimes tweaked by incorporating elements from Ottoman and Turkic traditions, by pushing the boundaries of gender norms or by introducing playfulness. Making the Modern Turkish Citizen offers a valuable portrait of the ongoing political and social changes on the lives of the Turkish middle class, and of how they saw and wanted to present themselves, privately and publicly.
