Book excerpt: Abstract: Air pollution is characterized by transboundary properties, dynamic processes, non-linear behavior, and long-range transport. Because of these characteristics, it is difficult to model air pollution behavior using the basic equations that represent the underlying physical transport and chemical transformation processes. As an alternative, a modeling approach is proposed in the particular case of sulfur dioxide (SO2), based on a circular and sectoral spatial representation of an airshed, and combining concepts derived from physical diffusion modeling and statistical regression modeling. An important feature of this approach is that it provides a means to construct a regionally scaleable air quality model. While using data collected locally (at the airshed level) for estimation purposes, the spatial interconnection of individual airsheds provides the means to model larger-scale air pollution processes, including the national or continental scale. The basic statistical model estimates the relationship between (1) background concentrations and pollution emissions from point and area sources and (2) the resulting concentration at a receptor site located at the center of the airshed, while accounting for pollution decay and uptake, meteorological conditions, and land cover characteristics. To empirically capture this spatial relationship, a considerable database, with extensive use of a Geographical Information System (GIS), is developed, connecting pollution emission sources, air quality monitoring stations, meteorological stations, and land uses. Because of the complex and non-linear structure of the model, an interactive grid search procedure has been designed to estimate the model, based on Ordinary Least Squares regression. The final estimated model explains about 56% of the variations in SO2 concentrations. An air quality optimization model, based on this statistical model and using linear programming, is introduced, and a case study, focusing on the state of Pennsylvania and larger-scale emitters (more than 10,000 tons of SO2 per year), is presented. The solution outlines how emission patterns change with the ambient pollution standard. The applicability of this airshed-based modeling approach for policy analysis is discussed, including (1) air quality forecasting, and (2) air quality planning. Dynamic extensions of the approach and potential data sources are also discussed. Finally, areas for further research are delineated.

In this research, concentrations of air particulate pollutants were measured at a total of twenty-three field locations in the urban districts of Beijing applying a laser particle counter in June and December 2015. Geographic Information System (GIS) was utilized to study the two and three-dimensional spatial distributions of air particulate pollution (PM0.5, PM1.0, PM2.5, PM5.0, PM10). Geostatistical or spatial statistical models were applied to interpolate the spatial distributions of air particulate pollution and real property values in the study area. Geographically Weighted Regression (GWR) was applied to analyze the spatial relationships of air particulate pollution and distribution of real property values. The three-dimensional analysis was conducted to illustrate vertical spatial distributions of air particulate pollution for each of the twenty-three field survey profiles in ArcGIS. Temporal distributions of air particulate pollution within 10 hours daytime at two field survey locations were analyzed. The results show that the concentrations of different sizes of air particulate pollutants in urban areas of Beijing distribute differently with different spatial patterns. The spatial distributions of real property values indicate that the highest value occurred in the northwestern and the central parts of Beijing both in the June and December 2015. There is no significant relationship of real property values and the intensity of air particulate pollution. Therefore, we suggest that the spatial distribution factors of air particulate pollution in Beijing is not a major factor for people to purchase real properties as homes.

Frustration, for the impossibility of incorporating newly available material that would require another major review of several key chap ters - an effort that is currently beyond my energies but not beyond my desires. The first canovaccio of this book came out in 1980 when I was invited by Computational Mechanics in the United Kingdom to give my first Air Pollution Modeling course. The course material, in the form of transparencies, expanded, year after year, thus providing a growing working basis. In 1985, the ECC Joint Research Center in Ispra, Italy, asked me to prepare a critical survey of mathe matical models of atmospheric pollution, transport and deposition. This support gave me the opportunity to prepare a sort of "first draft" of the book, which I expanded in the following years.

Book excerpt: The heterogeneous nature of urban air complicates human exposure estimates and creates a need for accurate, highly detailed spatiotemporal air contaminant models. The study expands on previous investigations by the Geospatial Determinants of Health Outcomes Consortium that examined relationships between air pollutant distributions and asthma exacerbations. Two approaches, the removal of spatial data outliers and the integration of spatial and temporal data, were used to refine air quality models in the Detroit and Windsor international airshed. The evaluation of associations between the resulting air quality models and asthma exacerbations in Detroit and Windsor revealed weaker correlations with spatial outliers removed but improved correlations with the addition of temporal data. Recommendations for future work include increasing the spatial and temporal resolution of the asthma datasets and incorporating Windsor NAPS data through temporal scaling to help confirm the findings of the Detroit temporal scaling.
