Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A WWII Japanese airman in the two greatest battles fought on Australian soil, shamed by his capture, faces a dilemma – uphold the honour of his family or risk the life of his young wife? When a young Japanese fighter pilot is shot down and captured in the 1942 Darwin bombing, he knows in his heart he should be dead. Duty is heavy as a mountain, death as light as a feather. That’s the Military Code and it means fight to the death, never surrender or you’ll bring a bitter shame on yourself and family. He conceals his true name to protect his family. Suicide is a possibility, but he’s drawn away from his military indoctrination by experiences with ordinary Australians, drawn towards living out his own individuality. But the young bride he left behind had vowed she would kill herself if he died. He could write to tell her he lives, but would that reveal his cowardice, shame his family? And must he sacrifice his individuality to join the growing number of Japanese prisoners in their ferocious plans for a murderous and suicidal breakout? A tale of the Australian WWII experience, seen through the eyes of this deeply troubled man.
Book Synopsis Air Force Cop: An Autobiography by : Kelly D. Harrison
Download or read book Air Force Cop: An Autobiography written by Kelly D. Harrison and published by Dorrance Publishing. This book was released on 2019-09-10 with total page 673 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Air Force Cop An Autobiography By: Kelly D. Harrison The enforcement of law in the US Armed Forces is covered by the Uniform Code of Military Justice and, when applicable, Title 18 of the US Code. There are other regulations and directives that can result in punitive action. The US Armed Forces is a US taxpayer funded enterprise with the US Army and US Navy almost as old as the nation itself. Crimes against property in the armed forces are not like that of breaking into a privately owned jewelry store in New York City, since all property “owned” by the military branches is property of the US Government. Military members and others who damage, destroy or steal property of the US Government and fellow military members are dealt with harshly. This includes those military members and civilians who commit murder, rape, acts of serious bodily injury and other “index crimes” such as auto theft, arson, kidnapping, etc., within the jurisdiction of the federal government. The US Armed Forces have several consolidated confinement facilities and the US Disciplinary Barracks at Ft. Leavenworth, Kansas. Each military branch has their own police and investigative agencies for dealing with crimes against property and people. In the US Air Force, there are the Security Forces (previously known as Air Police and Security Police) for protection of base resources, traffic control enforcement and investigation of misdemeanor offenses. The Air Force Office of Special Investigations (AFOSI) is a cadre of enlisted, officer and civilian special agents (all with Federal Law Enforcement Officer status) who are highly trained in specialties such as forensics, fraud, counter-intelligence, polygraph, computer crimes, electronic technical support (hidden cameras, electronic sweeping for covert recording devices, etc.) and general crimes such as arson, homicides, child abuse along with every other imaginable offense against property and people.

Download or read book In the Dark written by Simon Read and published by Penguin. This book was released on 2006-11-07 with total page 214 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In February, 1942, a woman was found strangled in a London air raid shelter. Chief Superintendent Frederick Cherrill, head of Scotland Yard’s revolutionary fingerprint division, knew just how well the wartime blackout concealed crime. But this was a brutal, senseless killing with few clues, no apparent motive—and no sign of the terror to come. The nightly air raids had darkened London’s neon dazzle but not its urge to live it up. With death a daily possibility, drinks and sex were everywhere. But one man had other urges. Over a five-day period, he murdered with a lightning-fast ferocity that stunned and baffled investigators. Dubbed “The Blackout Ripper,” he left few clues in his bloody wake—until a slip-up revealed his true identity, and shocked a city that thought it had seen it all.

Major Emma Lohrs, an attorney with the Judge Advocate General's Corps (JAG), is assigned to the case. But Lohrs soon uncovers a number of bizarre clues about the victim and the chief suspects, two of whom are well-respected, decorated leaders on base. To complicate matters, Lohrs also has to deal with Special Agent Eric Myers, an egotistical military agent whose contempt for the JAG attorney is only too evident. Forced to work together, Lohrs and Myers discover Conklin's involvement in a sexual love triangle, infi delity, and blackmail. But senior offi cials block their every move in a desperate attempt to hide the appalling truth. With the situation growing deadlier by the minute, Lohrs and Myers must put their hostile feelings aside long enough to solve the murder before someone else ends up dead...

Book Synopsis The Floatplane Notebooks by : Clyde Edgerton
Download or read book The Floatplane Notebooks written by Clyde Edgerton and published by Algonquin Books. This book was released on 2012-09-15 with total page 217 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This novel set in North Carolina is “warmly humorous, gossipy, and rich―a book with the soul of a family reunion” (The New York Times Book Review). The Copeland family goes back a long way in North Carolina. Albert Copeland keeps a written record, of sorts, in some notebooks he bought back in 1956 to log the flights of his home-built floatplane. He embarked on that project when the kids were still little, but now they’re all grown: Thatcher has a son of his own; Meredith and Mark are back from Vietnam; and Noralee is off dating hippies. The notebooks are thick with the floatplane’s failures to lift off, and bulging with color Polaroids of the wisteria blossoms near the family plot, favorite family dogs, and Thatcher and Bliss’s wedding; records of Noralee’s height and weight; a diagram of the graveyard; a newspaper story about wild-child Meredith’s many backfired schemes. This novel travels back in time more than one hundred years, to the Copeland bride who first planted the wisteria by the back porch that would take over the surrounding woods, and then back to the present again to show how even though times change, people are pretty much the same. “Among the wisest, most heartfelt writing to emerge from the South in our generation . . . Meredith Copeland’s first-person account of his Vietnam experience, homecoming, and physical paralysis in North Carolina is breathtakingly stark, full, and real.” ―Los Angeles Times “The Floatplane Notebooks has all the marks of a master storyteller going straight for the mystery itself. All the marks, that is, of a new American classic.” ―The Atlanta Journal-Constitution “A wonderful celebration of family and tradition, with warts, humor, tragedy, and triumph . . . An exceedingly rich book, a celebration of the human spirit that is brilliantly conceived, structured, and executed.” ―The Cincinnati Post
