Book excerpt: A flight guidance concept was developed to assist in flying continuous descent approach (CDA) procedures designed to lower the noise under the flight path of jet transport aircraft during arrival operations at an airport. The guidance consists of a trajectory prediction algorithm that was tuned to produce a high-efficiency, low noise flight profile with accompanying autopilot and flight display elements needed by the flight control system and pilot to fly the approach. A key component of the flight guidance was a real-time display of energy error relative to the predicted flight path. The guidance was integrated with the conventional Flight Management System (FMS) guidance of a modern jet transport airplane and tested in a high fidelity flight simulation. A charted arrival procedure, which allowed flying conventional arrivals, CDA arrivals with standard guidance, and CDA arrivals with the new low noise guidance, was developed to assist in the testing and evaluation of the low noise guidance concept. Results of the simulation testing showed the low noise guidance was easy to use by airline pilot test subjects and effective in achieving the desired noise reduction. Noise under the flight path was reduced by at least 2 decibels in Sound Exposure Level (SEL) at distances from about 3 nautical miles out to about 17.5 nautical miles from the runway, with a peak reduction of 8.5 decibels at about 10.5 nautical miles. Fuel consumption was also reduced by about 17% for the LNG conditions compared to baseline runs for the same flight distance. Book excerpt: This thesis addresses the challenges in the efficient and robust generation and optimization of three-dimensional landing trajectories for fixed-wing aircraft subject to prescribed boundary conditions and constraints on maneuverability and collision avoidance. In particular, this thesis focuses on the airliner emergency landing scenario and the minimization of landing time. The main contribution of the thesis is two-fold. First, it provides a hierarchical scheme for integrating the complementary strength of a variety of methods in path planning and trajectory optimization for the improvement in efficiency and robustness of the overall landing trajectory optimization algorithm. The second contribution is the development of new techniques and results in mesh refinement for numerical optimal control, optimal path tracking, and smooth path generation, which are all integrated in a hierarchical scheme and applied to the landing trajectory optimization problem. A density function based grid generation method is developed for the mesh refinement process during numerical optimal control. A numerical algorithm is developed based on this technique for solving general optimal control problems, and is used for optimizing aircraft landing trajectories. A path smoothing technique is proposed for recovering feasibility of the path and improving the tracking performance by modifying the path geometry. The optimal aircraft path tracking problem is studied and analytical results are presented for both the minimum-time, and minimum-energy tracking with fixed time of arrival. The path smoothing and optimal path tracking methods work together with the geometric path planner to provide a set of feasible initial guess to the numerical optimal control algorithm. The trajectory optimization algorithm in this thesis was tested by simulation experiments using flight data from two previous airliner accidents under emergency landing scenarios. The real-time application of the landing trajectory optimization algorithm as part of the aircraft on-board automation avionics system has the potential to provide effective guidelines to the pilots for improving the fuel consumption during normal landing process, and help enhancing flight safety under emergency landing scenarios. The proposed algorithms can also help design optimal take-off and landing trajectories and procedures for airports.

Book excerpt: In a currently congested and overbooked airspace, institutions and users of the aeronautical sector increasingly need a major organization and optimization of the air routes in order of reducing any kind of cost and mainly concerning about minimizing aircraft delays and flight time durations. It has been for this reason that this project makes some first steps into this topic with the design, programming and simulation of a sort of new tools in terms of improving airplane's trajectories in a specific and relevant field of the aerial navigation: the meteorology. First of all, an introductory and theoretical study about aviation weather has been done being directly related with any type of flight, even it has been mainly focused on commercial ones. This short summary, gives a future user of this tool the appropriate environment, allowing him to easily recognize the causes of the obtained results that are associated to specific meteorological phenomena. Secondly, the methodology used to design a Matlab program able to optimize aerial trajectories in function of atmospheric conditions has been explained. In this step, the procedure to obtain the meteorological data has also been detailed including its process and its respective worldwide cartographic representation to furthermore define the required algorithms to minimize the total flight length through wind currents and precipitation in every different scenario. Once the software's performance has been explained, several simulations have been run for real and theoretical cases in terms of visualizing the functionality of the program for different situations. Initially, as a real scenario, three possible commercial long, mid and short distance routes have been simulated between Barcelona and Tokyo, Moscow and Vienna. Additionally, some fictional simulations have been performed in terms of visualizing how the modification of their initial airspeeds and their path through different weather systems could influence the performance of the software. The project not only analyzes the appropriate performance of the program, but also explains what could suppose the implementation of a software like this in basic but realistic route planning.

The Air Traffic Control simulation model simulates a fleet approach with noise abatement approaches. Three different status displays are tested and compared in the simulation, and the optimal displays for controller are explored in the thesis.

The usual procedure for solving such problems is to set it up as a constrained optimal control problem. Lu and Schierman used direct methods to numerically solve the optimal control problems. Alternatively, one could use Pontryagin's Minimum Principle to obtain first-order necessary conditions for the optimal control problem and obtain a two-point boundary-value problem (TPBVP). Originally created to solve two-point boundary value problems (TPBVPs), the Modified Simple Shooting Method (MSSM) has been shown to be superior, both in speed and accuracy, to known methods for solving TPBVPs. Since optimal control problems can be formulated with differential equations and boundary conditions, it seems feasible to propose that the MSSM could be used to solve problems in optimal control. Here, the original MSSM algorithm was altered and used in conjunction with Pontryagin's Minimum Principle in an attempt to solve an optimal control problem in trajectory generation. In this paper, the authors consider the problem of trajectory redesign of the unpowered reentry phase for a hypersonic air vehicle. They consider outer loop equations governing the motion of the center of mass and consider the angle of attack to be the input variable. The lift and drag forces for the aircraft considered were obtained from a polynomial neural network approximation of experimental data. Effector deflections were chosen so that the aircraft Underwent trimmed flight. (6 figures, 7 refs.).

Book excerpt: Advances in materials, actuators, and control architectures have enabled new design paradigms for unmanned aerial vehicles based on biological inspiration. Indeed, there has been a recent drive to design aircraft features and behaviors based on those of birds, insects, and flying mammals. This dissertation focuses on one such bio-inspired maneuver, perching, which can be described as a low-thrust, aerodynamically controlled, planted landing. While planted landings are possible in helicopters and jump jets, it has yet to be achieved on a low-thrust, high-efficiency platform such as a long loiter reconnaissance aircraft. It is proposed that in-flight shape reconfiguration can enable this class of aircraft to execute this maneuver without sacrificing its cruise performance. This dissertation discusses the perching problem at various levels, from the aerodynamics of the wing to the complete trajectory of the maneuver. A lifting-line technique, a variant of Weissinger's classical method, is developed to analyze the aerodynamics of morphing wings in the attached flow regime. This tool is used both to study the effects of morphing on a wing's loading and to populate a database of aerodynamic coefficients for simulating the perching aircraft. Thusly, the aircraft is simulated in the longitudinal plane and compared to a similar fixed-configuration aircraft. Trim and stability analyses are performed on each aircraft in order to clarify the effects of morphing on the aircraft's longitudinal dynamics. Finally, viable perching trajectories, which bring the aircraft from a cruise configuration to a planted landing, are developed and optimized in terms of their spatial requirements. Three classes of aircraft are simulated in this optimization study: point-mass, fixedconfiguration (i.e. conventional), and morphing aircraft. Comparisons of these classes show that fixed-configuration aircraft are limited by their pitch maneuverability, whereas morphing can alleviate these limitations by increasing the available pitch authority. It is concluded that morphing increases pitch controllability during the maneuver while simultaneously decreasing the spatial requirements of the perching maneuver. (Abstract).

In this thesis, we develop a trajectory optimization algorithm for Free-Flight, which will produce wind optimal trajectory in horizontal direction. Flying wind optimal trajectory will bring fuel saving. We formulate the problem as a mixed integer program which concentrates on the time dependence and discrete aspects. We use commercial solvers, CPEX, SCIP, to solve the model. Concerning the nonlinearities of the constraints, we approximate it by using piecewise linear functions such as special ordered sets Type2, lambda method, and delta method.We also give a good mapping that can deal with the roundness of the earth so that the algorithm is more accurate and practical. At the end, we give practical result and simulation of the trajectory. From our model, the result shows that with weak wind we can save from 1.5% fuel to 3.5%, in strong wind we can save around 6% to 13% fuel. We hope in the future, we combine our horizontal optimal trajectory with vertical optimization profile, get an optimal trajectory in 4D (2D in horizontal, 1D in vertical and 1D in time), which will be optimal in both in horizontal and vertical direction, consumes as less fuel as possible.

Typical flight handbooks display fuel flow data, etc. in such a manner that the pilot must 'guesstimate' entry parameters such as average horizontal weight, or weight prior to descent.
