Book excerpt: Airborne Laser: Bullets of Light traces the development of the airborne laser from its scientific beginning to its development as a viable shield against missile attacks. For the first time, a professional historian has had access to formerly classified information, and has interwoven a rich documentary/history of scientists and engineers dealing with seemingly intractable technical problems. The book provides a comprehensive overview of the workings of a military laboratory involved with solving the problems of laser technology. The people responsible for this work come to life, and their long journey toward the implementation of their research is a real success story - one that has never been told. On another level, the book is a case study for those who are tempted to dismiss a demonstration system as a mere engineering problem. The results of the program have proven far-reaching, and contain lessons for the current generation of star warriors.

In fact no laser weapons existed. Yet. Who, then, will be The First Laser Warriors? What will be their story? John D. Gonglewski, writing from within the inner world of U.S. military scientists, international treaty negotiators, North Korean politicians, and the Airborne Laser and its diverse crew--based on the major laser aircraft acquisition underway today--spins a globe-spanning tale of history, technology, temptation, and revenge.

Book excerpt: The United States has pursued a variety of ballistic missile defense concepts and programs over the past fifty years. Since the 1970s, some attention has focused on directed energy weapons, such as high-powered lasers for missile defense. Today, the Airborne Laser (ABL) program is the furthest advanced of these directed energy weapons and remains the subject of some technical and program debate. The Department of Defense (DOD) has been a strong advocate for the ABL and its predecessor programs. The Defense Department and most missile defense advocates argue that the ABL, which is designed to shoot down attacking ballistic missiles within the first few minutes of their launch, is a necessary component of any broader U.S. ballistic missile defense system. Congress has largely supported the Administration's ABL program. Funding for the ABL began in FY1994, but the technologies supporting the ABL effort evolved over 25 years of research and development concerning laser power concepts, pointing and tracking, and adaptive optics. Delayed now for many years, the ABL program plans to conduct a lethality test no earlier than 2008. Assuming a successful test, the Defense Department has said that this test platform could then be made available on an emergency basis in a future crisis. To date, about $3.1 billion has been spent on the ABL program. Total program costs are not available because the system architecture has not been defined. Program skeptics continue to raise several issues. Their questions include the maturity of the technologies in use in the ABL program and whether current technical and integration challenges can be surmounted. If the ABL is proven successful, there have been questions about the number of platforms the United States should acquire. Seven aircraft have been mentioned previously, but is this number appropriate? What stresses might continued ABL program slippage or delays place on the supporting industrial base? How does the ABL compare to alternative concepts? To what degree should the United States invest in alternative missile defense technologies in the event that the ABL program may not prove successful? This report examines the ABL program and budget status. It also examines some of the issues raised above. This report does not provide a detailed technical assessment of the ABL program (see CRS Report RL30185, The Airborne Laser Anti-Missile Program). This report may be updated as necessary.

This book was released on 2016-12-14 with total page 205 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Compared with traditional remote sensing technologies, airborne Lidar data can provide researchers with additional 3D positional information, which is a key factor for advanced urban research, and particularly that of urban landscape ecology. Therefore, the need for applying Lidar data to a variety of disciplines is rapidly growing. However, the lack of remote sensing background makes the wider use of Lidar data highly difficult for scholars from other disciplines. In contrast to the majority of Lidar-related books that focus on sophisticated principles and general applications of Lidar data, this book provides the reader with a feasible framework for applying airborne Lidar data to urban research. In addition to providing a general introduction to the subject, this book explains in detail a series of case studies to demonstrate how these theoretical models can be employed to address practical urban issues. As such, this book not only provides Lidar scholars with a series of specifically designed research methods, but will also serve to inspire scholars from other disciplines, such as geographers, urban planners, ecologists, and decision-makers, with a complete framework of potential application fields.
