The recent tendency is to increase recirculated air proportion, for operating efficiency. There are also emergent many new cabin interior designs with appurtenances. A principle consideration is assessment of cabin air quality, and comfort, for the aircraft Environmental Control System (ECS) operating in cruise mode at flight altitude, where the efficiency issue is of primary impact. This paper addresses the application potential of CFD to assist in determination, perhaps optimization, of a quality cabin interior environment for broad ranging cabin configuration variations.

Book excerpt: The design and results of a study to relate human comfort and health to the airliner cabin environment are described. Rationale for studying the airliner cabin environment, the scope of the study, the experimental design, and flight selection are presented. This study was unique in including both in-flight passenger and crew surveys and a variety of measurements of the physical and chemical environment in the cabins of airliners in revenue service. It was found that, even with a very small sample, various physical parameters were statistically related to reported human comfort as measured by the survey instrument. For example, higher levels of carbon dioxide in the cabin during cruising were associated with lower ratings of the overall air quality in the cabin, less satisfaction with the odor in the cabin, and less satisfaction with the freshness of the air in the cabin. This paper focuses on the process for developing the study design and results from the survey. Companion papers discuss the results of the cabin chemical and physical environmental measurements.

Book excerpt: This chapter summarizes the work done at the Airliner Cabin Environment Research Lab (ACERL) related to air quality, airflow characteristics, and human thermal comfort inside aircraft cabins. The laboratory is part of the Institute for Environmental Research (IER) at Kansas State University. It has a Boing 767 mockup cabin, bleed air simulator, and a Boeing 737 actual aircraft section that were all utilized to conduct experimental studies to understand air quality inside aircraft cabins. The studies summarized in this chapter include particle image velocimetry (PIV) investigations, particle dispersion, computational fluid dynamics (CFD) simulations, tracer gas and smoke visualization studies, and bleed air investigations. The chapter also summarizes other related studies including virus dispersion, air quality monitoring devices, and related developed air quality standards. The scope of this chapter is to summarize the setup and results of each of the above categories. This summary along with the cited references provides results for full size aircraft cabin environments, helps validate data for CFD simulations, and provides comparison data for other similar studies. This helps improve the design of future aircraft cabins and their ventilation systems and recommends changes to maintenance practices done that can improve the health and safety of humans inside these enclosed compartments.
