Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A mechanical analog Vertical Energy Absorption Model (VEAM) is developed to predict the dynamics of an Air Cushion Landing System (ACLS) in the vertical dimension. Three degrees of freedom and thus three primary modes of oscillation are investigated: heave, pitch and roll. Data from Air Force Flight Dynamics Laboratory Tests of a full-scale Australian Jindivik drone are used to develop and verify the model. The VEAM study demonstrates that the use of a mechanical analog prediction scheme for an Air-Cushion Landing System has sufficient merit to warrant further investigation. It shows that a mechanical analog model can predict system response within the model domain of three degrees of freedom without knowledge of the numerous and varying trunk and cushion parameters if the mode spring and damper coefficients are provided.

Book excerpt: Masters Theses in the Pure and Applied Sciences was first conceived, published, and disseminated by TPRC at Purdue University in 1957, starting its coverage of theses with the academic year 1955. Beginning with Volume 13, the printing and dissemina tion phases of the activity was transferred to University Microfilms/Xerox of Ann Arbor, Michigan, with the thought that such an arrangement would be more beneficial to the academic and general scientific and technical community. After five years of this joint undertaking we have concluded that it will be in the interest of all concerned if the printing and distribution of the volume were handled by a well-known publishing house to assure improved service and better communication. Hence, effective with this Volume 18, Masters Theses in the Pure and Applied Sciences will be disseminated on a worldwide basis by Plenum Publishing Corporation of New York. All back issues can also be ordered from Plenum. As we embark on this new partnership with Plenum, we also initiate a new venture in that this important annual reference work now covers Canadian universities as well as those in the United States. We are sure that this broader base will greatly enhance the value of these volumes.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Air Cushion Landing System is a scheme to replace the wheeled landing gear on aircraft by a peripheral jet air cushion. The concept employs a flexible elastic membrane or 'trunk' which is attached to the bottom of the aircraft fuselage. During flight, the trunk shrinks elastically and hugs the bottom of the fuselage like a de-icing boot. When a flow of air is applied to the inside of the trunk, the elastic material stretches and forms an elongated doughnut-shaped protrusion on the underside of the aircraft. The air flow is ducted by the trunk to the fuselage periphery and exhausted through a large number of holes or slots. As a result, a pressure builds up under the aircraft when the ground is approached. The pressure is sufficient to support the aircraft and absorb its vertical landing velocity. The study develops analytical relationships between the variables associated with the Air Cushion Landing System. Included are the following: The derivation of a theory which predicts the static characteristics of the system; Analytical methods for predicting flow, jet height and power requirements; Curves which illustrate the interrelationships among the design variables; Computer programs for predicting the cross-sectional area and shape of the elastic trunk; The development and test of an analytical model which predicts the dynamic response of the system to landing impact; A discussion of the design considerations for the system.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: An analysis of an inelastic ACLS plunge mode dynamic model is presented. The ACLS has unrestrained side elements and frozen end elements. The model exhibits unstable behavior at certain operating conditions for which the side elements are in contact with the ground. A linear analysis showed this instability to be due mainly to the altitude sensitivities of the cushion to atmosphere airflows and the attendant influence on the dynamic pressure forces on the vehicle. The model instability can be alleviated by isolating side and end elements so that they are all unrestrained and by simultaneously venting the air cushion directly to atmosphere. (Author).
