Book excerpt: First of all, I don't do either Cowboy Action Shooting or Cowboy Fast Draw - yet. However, I am old enough to have grown up with the radio, TV and movie cowboys that used to dominate the airwaves and the silver screen. The values that I learned growing up were heavily influenced by those western heroes - Hopalong Cassidy, Roy Rogers, John Wayne, and many others. Like other kids my age I dreamed about riding the range with a six gun at my side. Times have changed but I still watch old westerns and I still get a kick out of watching the good guys defeat the bad guys. So when I read an article recently in the local paper about a fast draw contest it caught my interest and I started doing some research about cowboy shooting - fast draw and action shooting. The more I read the more interested I became in the people who were not just shooting firearms from the Old West period in our history, but were also reviving the spirit of the Hollywood "Old West." Those shows from the 50s and 60s included themes such as protecting the weak, learning to live peacefully with people of other races and religions, and standing up for what you believe - and even if the plots were a little simplistic, they helped youngsters identify those values with the heroes they were watching on the TV or movie screen. Eventually I decided to write this book about Cowboy Action Shooting and Cowboy Fast Draw, along with some background information about the actual history of the Old West. The book isn't an instruction manual or an expert view of these sports - it's intended to be an overview of what they are, how they got started, what you need to participate, and why you might enjoy taking part. And it's written with the hope that a few people who aren't aware of Cowboy Action Shooting or Cowboy Fast Draw may see this book, get interested themselves, and help keep the spirit of the Old West alive.

Book excerpt: Weather in San Antonio can be anywhere from nasty to fantastic, but this day was better than fantastic as Johnny Devreau walked toward the cattle barns. The weather reminded him of some nice days he had seen in Hawaii, only cooler. He was at the Joe Freeman Coliseum for the San Antonio Livestock Show and Rodeo, an annual ten-day affair. It seemed everyone, male and female, young and old, was wearing the same thingLevis, cowboy boots, and a western-style shirtand most had a western-style hat. This was standard everyday wear for Devreau. The Saturday rodeo matinee was just over, and the standing room crowd was spilling out of the coliseum in every which direction, or so it seemed. It made getting to where Devreau wanted to be slowgoing.

To the best of my recollection, in nearly forty years, I had shot guns twice in my life. Returning home from a family vacation, I suddenly felt compelled to take a risk and try something completely new. So, I joined my recently retired father in playing the cowboy action game. Competing under the alias “Fret Maverick,” I was introduced to a slice of Americana I would have never known otherwise. The Cowboy Year is a quirky and beautiful, Midwest-set, father-and-son memoir. But ultimately, The Cowboy Year is a story about having the courage to tell new stories.

Download or read book Shooters written by Abigail A. Kohn and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2004-06-10 with total page 241 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Frequenting gun shops and shooting ranges, and devoting particular attention to those whose interest in weaponry extends beyond the casual, Abigail A. Kohn captures in finegrained and often entertaining, yet always humane, detail how gun owners actually think and feel about their guns. Through her conversations--with cowboy action shooters at a regional match, sport shooters, hunters, with shooters of all ages and races--we hear of the "savage beauty" of a beautifully crafted long gun, of the powerful historical import owners attach to their guns, of the sense of empowerment that comes with shooting skill, and the visceral thrill of discharging a dangerous weapon. Cutting through the cliches that link gun ownership with violent, criminal subcultures and portray shooters as "gun nuts" or potential terrorists, Kohn provides us with a lively and untainted portrait of American gun enthusiasts.
