Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The book that inspired the new film A Million Miles Away. Born into a family of migrant workers, toiling in the fields by the age of six, Jose M. Hernàndez dreamed of traveling through the night skies on a rocket ship. Reaching for the Stars is the inspiring story of how he realized that dream, becoming the first Mexican-American astronaut. Hernàndez didn't speak English till he was 12, and his peers often joined gangs, or skipped school. And yet, by his twenties he was part of an elite team helping develop technology for the early detection of breast cancer. He was turned down by NASA eleven times on his long journey to donning that famous orange space suit. Hernàndez message of hard work, education, perseverance, of "reaching for the stars," makes this a classic American autobiography.

Aderin-Pocock begins with a basic overview—unpacking everything from the moon’s topography and composition to its formation and orbit around the Earth. Book excerpt: In Shoot for the Stars and You Will Land on the Moon, Leopoldo Fernández Pujals, the only Spanish entrepreneur who has led two companies into the prestigious Ibex 35 index on the Madrid Stock Exchange, shares his life experiences and shows how students, executives and those with ambition can achieve their dreams. Fernandez guides readers with wit, theory and real life examples to show how anyone with tenacity, effort and desire can become successful by overcoming the two great impediments to realizing their goals: fearitis and excusitis. Along the way, Mr. Fernandez shares many secrets to success including basic but often overlooked strategies for selling, keys to successful personnel management and detailed thought processes to ensure an executive stays on mission. Most important, Mr. Fernandez explains through stories and analysis why the most important goal for any company is to grow, with examples of how to overcome bumps in the road and recognize the difference between a legitimate need and an excuse. Shoot for the Stars is a life journey beginning with Leopoldo's hurried departure as a youth from Cuba to Miami, his education and starting a family before enlisting in the Army for the Vietnam War. Upon his return from war, Fernandez both stood out and struggled with corporate office politics as a young executive in Latin America and Spain. All this time, he dreams of opening his own business. This leads to the founding of Telepizza, the amazing stories behind its meteoric growth and struggles for control. The story concludes with lessons from the purchase of Jazztel: its rescue from insolvency amidst fierce competition from an industry giant, its growth from just 5,000 ADSL customers to one of the biggest telecommunications firms in Europe and its ultimate merger with Orange. Readers learn the keys to success as an entrepreneur and are equipped with knowledge so they too, can realize their dreams.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The long-awaited memoir of a trailblazer and role model who is telling her story for the first time. Eileen Collins was an aviation pioneer her entire career, from her crowning achievements as the first woman to command an American space mission as well as the first to pilot the space shuttle to her early years as one of the Air Force’s first female pilots. She was in the first class of women to earn pilot’s wings at Vance Air Force Base and was their first female instructor pilot. She was only the second woman pilot admitted to the Air Force’s elite Test Pilot Program at Edwards Air Force Base. NASA had such confidence in her skills as a leader and pilot that she was entrusted to command the first shuttle mission after the Columbia disaster, returning the US to spaceflight after a two-year hiatus. Since retiring from the Air Force and NASA, she has served on numerous corporate boards and is an inspirational speaker about space exploration and leadership. Eileen Collins is among the most recognized and admired women in the world, yet this is the first time she has told her story in a book. It is a story not only of achievement and overcoming obstacles but of profound personal transformation. The shy, quiet child of an alcoholic father and struggling single mother, who grew up in modest circumstances and was an unremarkable student, she had few prospects when she graduated from high school, but she changed her life to pursue her secret dream of becoming an astronaut. She shares her leadership and life lessons throughout the book with the aim of inspiring and passing on her legacy to a new generation.

Book excerpt: Radiating fire and ice, comets as a phenomenon seem part science, part myth. Two thousand years ago when a comet shot across the night sky, it convinced the Romans that Julius Caesar was a god. In 1066, Halley’s Comet was interpreted as a foreshadowing of the death of Harold the Second in the Battle of Hastings. Even today the arrival of a comet often feels auspicious, confirming our hopes, fears, and sense of wonder in the universe. In Comets, P. Andrew Karam takes the reader on a far-ranging exploration of these most beautiful and dramatic objects in the skies, revealing how comets and humanity have been interwoven throughout history. He delves into the science of comets and how it has changed over time; the way comets have been depicted in art, religion, literature, and popular culture; and how comets have appeared in the heavens through the centuries. Comprehensive in scope and beautifully illustrated throughout, the book will appeal not only to the budding astronomer, but to anyone with an appreciation for these compelling and remarkable celestial bodies.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: For those who know... that something is going on... The witnesses are legion, scattered across the world and dotted through history, people who looked up and saw something impossible lighting up the night sky. What those objects were, where they came from, and who—or what—might be inside them is the subject of fierce debate and equally fierce mockery, so that most who glimpsed them came to wish they hadn’t. Most, but not everyone. Among those who know what they’ve seen, and—like the toll of a bell that can’t be unrung—are forever changed by it, are a pilot, an heiress, a journalist, and a prisoner of war. From the waning days of the 20th century’s final great war to the fraught fields of Afghanistan to the otherworldly secrets hidden amid Nevada’s dusty neverlands—the truth that is out there will propel each of them into a labyrinth of otherworldly technology and the competing aims of those who might seek to prevent—or harness—these beings of unfathomable power. Because, as it turns out, we are not the only ones who can invent and build...and destroy. Featuring actual events and other truths drawn from sources within the military and intelligence community, Tom DeLonge and A.J. Hartley offer a tale at once terrifying, fantastical, and perhaps all too real. Though it is, of course, a work of... fiction?

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: William DugganÕs 2007 book, Strategic Intuition, showed how innovation really happens in business and other fields and how that matches what modern neuroscience tells us about how creative ideas form in the human mind. In his new book, Creative Strategy, Duggan offers a step-by-step guide to help individuals and organizations put that same method to work for their own innovations. DugganÕs book solves the most important problem of how innovation actually happens. Other methods of creativity, strategy, and innovation explain how to research and analyze a situation, but they donÕt guide toward the next step: developing a creative idea for what to do. Or they rely on the magic of ÒbrainstormingÓÑjust tossing out ideas. Instead, Duggan shows how creative strategy follows the natural three-step method of the human brain: breaking down a problem into parts and then searching for past examples to create a new combination to solve the problem. ThatÕs how innovation really happens. Duggan explains how to follow these three steps to innovate in business and any other field as an individual, a team, or a whole company. The crucial middle stepÑthe search for past examplesÑtakes readers beyond their own brain to a Òwhat-works scanÓ of what others have done within and outside of the company, industry, and country. It is a global search for good ideas to combine as a new innovation. Duggan illustrates creative strategy through real-world cases of innovation that use the same method: from Netflix to Edison, from Google to Henry Ford. He also shows how to integrate creative strategy into other methods you might currently use, such as PorterÕs Five Forces or Design Thinking. Creative Strategy takes the mystery out of innovation and puts it within your grasp.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: There are many books talking about money. How to get rich, financial planning, finance management, investments, insurance, tax planning, stocks trading, technical analysis, bonds, asset management and the list goes on. This is not such a book and it is not a “Get Rich Quick” formula book. I really hope there is such a formula but truthfully, I do not believe there is such a thing. Yes, it is possible to get rich but it is neither simple nor quick and there is definitely no sure fire formula to it. On the other hand though, there is certainly an easy way to “Become Poor Quick”. This is where this book comes to rescue, it aims to provide an understanding of the key concepts behind money management, impart the basic principles of managing money and provide some simple tools and exercise to prevent people from squandering off their money. Much like the “Seven Habits of Successful People”, once the basic principles are mastered or have become habits, you will be able to deal with anything involving money without getting into an undesirable situation. A lot of people will say what’s so hard about this but contrary to popular belief, the basic principles are sometimes the hardest ones to grasp and master. Often, people zoom into the details, dream about how to get rich quickly and forget the basic principles getting themselves burnt in the process. Education as they say it is the key out of poverty. However, even though many of us go through the normal education process, some all the way up to university, I realise that we are never formally educated in managing our money. Many, if not all of us, learn about managing money the hard way, through experience or what some may call the school of hard knocks. Although nothing beats learning through experience, it is human’s ability to build on the experience of our predecessors that have allowed us to progress. There are many books talking about money but I realise that most focus on the greed of human and try to make a quick buck out of telling people how to get rich quick. I could not find any book out there that imparts people with the most basic skills of money management. What I call the primary and foundation skills that everyone ought to possess regardless of their education level. These are the skills which I wish I have been taught when I was younger rather than to learn them through the hard way. So this is the main reason why I wrote this book, I hope that it will help to guide others along on money management so that they may avoid the pitfalls that so many of those who went before (including myself) have made.

Book excerpt: From the #1 New York Times-bestselling author of The 48 Laws of Power comes the definitive new book on decoding the behavior of the people around you Robert Greene is a master guide for millions of readers, distilling ancient wisdom and philosophy into essential texts for seekers of power, understanding and mastery. Now he turns to the most important subject of all - understanding people's drives and motivations, even when they are unconscious of them themselves. We are social animals. Our very lives depend on our relationships with people. Knowing why people do what they do is the most important tool we can possess, without which our other talents can only take us so far. Drawing from the ideas and examples of Pericles, Queen Elizabeth I, Martin Luther King Jr, and many others, Greene teaches us how to detach ourselves from our own emotions and master self-control, how to develop the empathy that leads to insight, how to look behind people's masks, and how to resist conformity to develop your singular sense of purpose. Whether at work, in relationships, or in shaping the world around you, The Laws of Human Nature offers brilliant tactics for success, self-improvement, and self-defense.

Book excerpt: I walked on the moon. This is my journey. But it didn't begin when I stepped on board Apollo 11 on July 1, 1969. It began the day I was born. Becoming an astronaut took more than education, discipline, and physical strength. It took years of determination and believing that any goal is possible—from riding a bike alone across the George Washington Bridge at age ten to making a footprint on the Moon. I always knew the Moon was within my reach—and that I was ready to be on the team that would achieve the first landing. But it was still hard to believe when I took my first step onto the Moon's surface. We all have our own dreams. This is the story of how mine came true.
