Within the pages of this invaluable resource, you will find more than sixty ready-to-use activities designed to educate teens about pregnancy, HIV/AIDS, and STI prevention. Each exercise is drawn from prevention programs that have been scientifically proven to change adolescent health behaviors, and will teach teens how to discuss sexual issues in an honest manner, postpone sexual activity, negotiate condom use, gain a better understanding of gay, lesbian and bisexual issues, and more. The book offers many types of exercises, including: Group discussions Role plays Homework assignments Group activities Instructor-led discussions Additional exercises, including field trips, guest speakers, and more Adolescent Sexual Health Education: An Activity Sourcebook offers a wide range of activities which can easily supplement an existing program or provide the foundation for an entirely new one. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Adolescents obviously do not always act in ways that serve their own best interests, even as defined by them. Sometimes their perception of their own risks, even of survival to adulthood, is larger than the reality; in other cases, they underestimate the risks of particular actions or behaviors. It is possible, indeed likely, that some adolescents engage in risky behaviors because of a perception of invulnerabilityâ€"the current conventional wisdom of adults' views of adolescent behavior. Others, however, take risks because they feel vulnerable to a point approaching hopelessness. In either case, these perceptions can prompt adolescents to make poor decisions that can put them at risk and leave them vulnerable to physical or psychological harm that may have a negative impact on their long-term health and viability. A small planning group was formed to develop a workshop on reconceptualizing adolescent risk and vulnerability. With funding from Carnegie Corporation of New York, the Workshop on Adolescent Risk and Vulnerability: Setting Priorities took place on March 13, 2001, in Washington, DC. The workshop's goal was to put into perspective the total burden of vulnerability that adolescents face, taking advantage of the growing societal concern for adolescents, the need to set priorities for meeting adolescents' needs, and the opportunity to apply decision-making perspectives to this critical area. This report summarizes the workshop.

Book excerpt: There is a critical need to find effective ways of reducing the risky behaviour that leads to infection with HIV and other sexually transmitted infections (STIs) among uniformed service populations (i.e., military, peacekeepers, police). Behavioural change, based on acquiring knowledge and learning skills, along with individual risk assessment, is one of the most effective ways of achieving this and of encouraging uniformed services personnel to become advocates in the fight against HIV/AIDS. Peer education is an important component in this process. When addressing HIV/AIDS/STIs among uniformed services, this Peer Education Kit can be used both in the training of peer educators and by the peer educators themselves.

Book excerpt: Teaching AIDS begins with a discussion of how teachers can create an environment of support for an AIDS education programme. Recognizing that AIDS education must differ for students of different age groups, the author presents tailored, age-appropriate content - what and how teachers should communicate AIDS information to young children, older children and teenage students.Teaching AIDS also addresses actual methods teachers can use to influence their students' attitudes and behaviour by helping them to recognize problem situations in which risks might arise, and presenting them with the actual skills they need to protect themselves in such situations.
