Visit us online at www.1stWorldLibrary.ORG - - GENTLE READER: - Let me make you acquainted with my book, "Back Home." (Your right hand, Book, your right hand. Pity's sakes! How many times have I got to tell you that? Chest up and forward, shoulders back and down, and turn your toes out more.) It is a little book, Gentle Reader, but please don't let that prejudice you against it. The General Public, I know, likes to feel heft in its hand when it buys a book, but I had hoped that you were a peg or two above the General Public. That mythical being goes on a reading spree about every so often, and it selects a book which will probably last out the craving, a book which "it will be impossible to lay down, after it is once begun, until it is finished." (I quote from the standard book notice). A few hours later the following dialogue ensues:

Book excerpt: THEY WERE GREEN, THEY WERE LITTLE, THEY WERE BALD AS BILLIARD BALLS AND THEY WERE EVERYWHERE! Luke Devereaux was a science fiction writer, holed up in a desert shack waiting for inspiration. He was the first to see a Martian - but he certainly wasn't the last. It was estimated that one billion of them had arrived - one to every three human beings on Earth. Obnoxious green creatures who could be seen and heard (but not harmed) and who probed private sex lives as shamelessly as they exposed government secrets. No one knew why they had come. No one knew how to make them go away - except perhaps, Luke Devereaux. Unfortunately he was going slightly bananas, so it wouldn't be easy. But for a science fiction writer nothing was impossible...

Book excerpt: Protagonist Finas search for happiness and belonging begins on the night of her aborted circumcision and continues through her teenage years in Freetown, Sierra Leones capital; her twenties in the Washington Metropolitan Area; and ends with her return to Sierra Leone to work as an advocate for war-traumatized children. The novel explores the problems she encounters in each setting against the backdrop of the tensions, ambiguities, and fragmentation of the stranger/immigrant condition and the characters struggles to clarify their ideas about home and abroad. Finas circumcision gets significant, though not sensational, play in the different attitudes toward the practice between her and her fianc Cammy, a Trinidadian urologist. The differences complicate their relationship at a time when skeletons from their pasts threaten their impending marriage. The stories of Finas friend, African-American Aman and her fianc, Nigerian Bayo; of Edna (Finas foster sister) and her husband Kizzy; and of Mawaf, a war-traumatized teen, unfold in subplots that merge with the main plot and overarching theme of belonging as characters straddle home and abroad places.

Book excerpt: This carefully crafted ebook: “The Irish Guards in the Great War: The First & The Second Battalion (Complete Edition - Volume 1&2)” is formatted for your eReader with a functional and detailed table of contents. Excerpt: “These volumes try to give soberly and with what truth is possible, the experiences of both battalions of the Irish Guards from 1914 to 1918. The point of view is the battalions’, and the facts mainly follow the Regimental Diaries, supplemented by the few private letters and documents which such a war made possible, and by some tales that have gathered round men and their actions.” Joseph Rudyard Kipling (1865–1936) was an English short-story writer, poet, and novelist. He wrote tales and poems of British soldiers in India and stories for children. He is regarded as a major innovator in the art of the short story; his children's books are classics of children's literature; and one critic described his work as exhibiting "a versatile and luminous narrative gift".

Book excerpt: BLUES CHASED A RABBIT is the gripping story of Jason Defoy, a black musician whose cool life in New York seems light years away from the miserable Mississippi origins he recalls with frustrated anger and scorn. The accidental death of his pregnant wife suddenly disrupts his life and forces a confrontation. Unable to face the torment in his mind, unable to find solace in drugs, simulated sex, or old friendships, he finds himself driven like a hunted animal to his roots in the South. Nameless and penniless, alone on the Mississippi Road, he falls victim to the medieval vagrancy laws which, to this day, permit southern farmers to exploit free labour. He becomes a virtual slave, chattelled to Harlan Smith, a southern white farmer struggling to hold on to a way of life he knows is fast disappearing. The relationships between Jason, his fellow captive Robart, and their sadistic yet poignantly wretched white master, form the background of a story which is unique in its perceptive treatment of the violence underlying the black-white confrontation in America today. BLUES CHASED A RABBIT is a brutally human novel which tells the truth as it has rarely been told before.

Book excerpt: Includes the plays A Bitter Herb, Absolution, Identity, The Far Side, Mary Seacole, and Urban Afro-Saxons This second and sister volume to Hidden Gems showcases a further range of plays by Black British writers whose work reaches beyond themes too-often perceived by mainstream theatre commissioning as defining Black people's experiences. The plays, monodrama and libretto represent subject-matter from woman-centred history, revolutionary politics, trans-racial adoption and African-diasporic familial heritage, as contoured by the writers' boundary crossing profiles as poets, playwrights, performers and directors. The accompanying critical introductions are provided by people committed to recognising the aesthetic and political significance of the work, and its necessary inclusion in British theatre and literary history.

Book excerpt: The foundational, classic anthology that revived interest in the author of Their Eyes Were Watching God—"one of the greatest writers of our time"—and made her work widely available for a new generation of readers (Toni Morrison). During her lifetime, Zora Neale Hurston was praised for her writing but condemned for her independence and audacity. Her work fell into obscurity until the 1970s, when Alice Walker rediscovered Hurston's unmarked grave and anthologized her writing in this groundbreaking collection for the Feminist Press. I Love Myself When I Am Laughing... And Then Again When I Am Looking Mean and Impressive established Hurston as an intellectual leader for future generations of black writers. A testament to the power and breadth of Hurston's oeuvre, this edition—newly reissued for the Feminist Press's fiftieth anniversary—features a new preface by Walker. "Through Hurston, the soul of the black South gained one of its most articulate interpreters." —The New York Times

Book excerpt: BEHIND THE KITCHEN DOOR .A Shotgun Wedding, begins in the rural countryside of North Carolina and takes the reader on an adventure and experiences to some of the most exciting cities that one only hears about. From the big, historical city of Philadelphia, Pennsylvania with all its rich history of America, to the tall skyscrapers and exciting nightlife of Manhattan in New York City, to the sprawling city of Los Angeles, California and to Europe and the romantic, "La Ville-Lumiere" (The City Of Light), Paris, France and the French Riviera. It is a story of love, romance, racism, miscegenation, betrayals, triumphs and tragedies. It is the story of Alene, a pretty, smart, teenager who has to endure a lot of tragedies in her young life and of her family's struggle in America's rural south from the mid 1920's through the Great Depression in the 1930´s, dealing with racial segregation and Jim Crow laws. She has to grow up much too fast due to the passing of her mother, after giving birth to her baby sister. Alene who was thirteen and the oldest of eight children, helped her father to raise her younger siblings until her father remarried. She gets pregnant by her boyfriend Julius at age seventeen and tells her father, who beats her mercilessly. She and Julius are forced to go to court and tell the judge where they had sex. They are made to marry. She leaves Julius because of beatings and abuse and move up north to Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. On her way up north, she experiences first-hand Jim Crow laws of the south, starting with segregated interstate train cars. Once in Philadelphia she meets four young women and they form a lasting friendship. Alene meets and fall in love with Mitch at a jazz club. She becomes seriously ill with tuberculosis, and her father comes and takes her and her little boy back home. Her doctor admits her to a sanitarium for treatment but later tells her and her family that the disease is much worst than he thought. She dies a few months later of the illness.

Book excerpt: Step back in time and meet everyday people from another era: This edition brings to you the complete collection of hundreds of life stories, incredible vivid testimonies of former slaves from 17 U.S. southern states, including photos of the people being interviewed and their extraordinary narratives. After the end of Civil War in 1865, more than four million slaves were set free. There were several efforts to record the remembrances of the former slaves. The Federal Writers' Project was one such project by the United States federal government to support writers during the Great Depression by asking them to interview and record the myriad stories and experiences of slavery of former slaves. The resulting collection preserved hundreds of life stories from 17 U.S. states that would otherwise have been lost in din of modernity and America's eagerness to deliberately forget the blot on its recent past.
