Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Weather and climate are common terms to know about the ambient conditions of the environment of any region. Weather is fast changing everywhere in this world. Anthropogenic i.e., human activities especially use of fossil fuel namely coal, petroleum products and modern artificial chemical viz. CFC, CH4, SO3; N2O etc. fueled this climatic change in 21st century. The elements of weather such as solar radiation, air temperature, atmospheric pressure, wind movement, relative humidity, precipitation and clouds are bases to understand the weather and climate of any part of this planet earth. In fact, weather affect equally both to living as well as non-living component of earth. Change in the nature of the physical and living component of earth that is due to land degradation, deforestation, emission of greenhouse gas, industrialization and urbanization etc. has marked influence on earth’s ecology and environment. As climate affect our each and every aspect of growth and development and hence understanding environment is of paramount importance for scientific and balanced development of modern human society. Therefore, keeping all these in mind, it is our sincere efforts to mention almost all relevant topics and provide easy and simple material in grasping form for all concerned to understand the complex nature of earth’s environment.

Book excerpt: The global food security and sustainable agriculture are the key challenges before the scientific community in the present era of enhanced climate variability, rapidly rising population and dwindling resources. No part of the world is immune from meteorological extremes of one sort or another posing threat to the food security. Agrometeorology has to make most efficient use of the opportunities available in achieving the objectives of enhancing productivity and maintenance of sustainability. Increased awareness and technological advancement have provided opportunities to develop efficient agrometeorological services that can help cope with risks. These include improvements in weather forecasting, better understanding of the monsoon variability and crop-weather relationships, advances in operational agrometeorology and agrometeorological information systems, adaptation strategies to climate change and improved risk evaluation and management. This book based on an International Workshop held in New Delhi, India should be of interest to all organizations and agencies interested in agrometeorological applications.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Designed as a textbook for undergraduate and postgraduate students of agriculture, it fulfills the need for an uptodate comprehensive information (as per the syllabus framed by ICAR) on the theoretical and applied aspects of agricultural meteorology. Illustrated with graphs, schematic representations, photographs and pictures, the scope of the book is divided into three major areas of study: 1. Discusses the basic aspects of agricultural meteorology; introduces the principal meteorological variables (with emphasis on radiation and temperature) that govern the atmosphere and highlights the causal factors leading to the global and local weather and climate variations like atmospheric pressure and winds, clouds, monsoon and precipitation. 2.Addresses the effects of weather on various crops and discusses applications of Hopkin’s bioclimatic law to mitigate the ill effects of weather on crop production; explains agroclimatic classification and discusses droughts and their management strategy with special reference to crops. 3.Deals with various types of weather forecasting and their techniques including weather service to farmers; explains crop growth simulation modelling—a newly emerging area in agricultural meteorology; focuses on influence of weather in relation to pest and disease outbreaks, discusses climate change and provides introduction to remote sensing. A special feature of the book is that it contains many indigenous examples related to the humid tropics. In addition, the book has many plates and information on basic and sophisticated meteorological equipment. A variety of chapter-end questions help develop students’ understanding of salient concepts and makes the material presented more meaningful.

While it is not possible to prevent the occurrence of natural disasters, the resultant disastrous effects can be reduced mitigated through proper planning and effective preparation. This book, based on a gathering of experts in Beijing, discusses ways to reduce the vulnerability of agriculture to disaster and extreme events, both by accurate and timely warning, and by impact-reducing countermeasures.

They vector serious human and animal diseases and endanger biological diversity through competition and niche displacement. This book addresses issues pertaining to introduction pathways of invasive species, their bionomics, dispersal, risk assessment, economic impact, and possible management and control options. It provides comprehensive information on global invasion, economic impact, and management options for the red palm weevil, spotted wing Drosophila, and the South American tomato pinworm. Additionally, it examines the economic utilization of invasive plant species from the families Asteraceae and Cactaceae as means of management. University teachers and researchers in the fields of entomology, ecology, and environment, as well as students, will find this book useful.

Book excerpt: Agrometeorology or Agricultural Meteorology involves the integration of climatological and meteorological data and techniques into agricultural problems, such as crop production, soil moisture, moisture stress, and migration of pests. Agrometeorology is the study and use of weather and climate information to enhance or expand agricultural crops and/or to increase crop production. Agrometeorology mainly involves the interaction of meteorological and hydrological factors, on one hand and agriculture, which encompasses horticulture, animal husbandry, and forestry. It is an interdisciplinary, holistic science forming a bridge between physical and biological sciences and beyond. It deals with a complex system involving soil, plant, atmosphere, agricultural management options, and others, which are interacting dynamically on various spatial and temporal scales. Specifically, the fully coupled soil-plant-atmosphere system has to be well understood in order to develop reasonable operational applications or recommendations for stakeholders. For these reasons, a comprehensive analysis of cause-effect relationships and principles that describe the influence of the state of the atmosphere, plants, and soil on different aspects of agricultural production, as well as the nature and importance of feedback between these elements of the system is necessary. Agrometeorological methods therefore use information and data from different key sciences such as soil physics and chemistry, hydrology, meteorology, crop and animal physiology and phenology, agronomy, and others. Observed information is often combined in more or less complex models, focused on various components of system parts such as mass balances, biomass production, crop growth and yield, and crop or pest phenology in order to detect sensitivities or potential responses of the soil-biosphere-atmosphere system. This book entitled Agrometeorology emphasizes on the application of meteorological information and data to weather sensitive problems of agriculture.
