Book excerpt: The Board on Agriculture organized a Forum on Agriculture's Role in K-12 Education to provide an opportunity for agricultural professional societies to explore ways in which examples from agriculture, food, and environment systems can be used to enhance inquiry-based science education. Participants discussed how professional societies could enhance the continued education of K-12 teachers, improve school science programs, and increase collaboration with other professional societies and science teachers. This booklet presents the proceedings of this forum. Chapters include: (1) A Scientist's Role in K-12 Education; (2) Scientist and Teacher Partnerships; (3) Sustaining Support for Science Education; and (4) Future Roles for Professional Societies and Scientists. Book excerpt: The preparation of school-based agriculture teachers has been a part of public education for over 100 years. However, there is a lack of texts available that address the components of teacher education in agriculture including teacher preparation and related activities. Further study that goes beyond concepts to include practice and applications is required in order to further develop educators in this sector. Preparing Agriculture and Agriscience Educators for the Classroom provides an up-to-date consideration of the best practices for developing and enhancing a complete teacher preparation program and highlights and showcases concepts and applications. It is a mainstay for teacher education and teacher preparation in agriculture and is applicable anywhere in the world where teaching agriculture exists. Covering a range of topics such as field experiences and student learning, this reference work is ideal for researchers, scholars, practitioners, academicians, administrators, instructors, and students.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excess minerals in the diet and water of animals can have an adverse effect on animal health, consumers, and the environment. Preventing unsafe mineral exposure is a fundamental part of animal nutrition and management. At the request of the Food and Drug Administration, the National Academies convened a committee to make recommendations on animal tolerances and toxic dietary levels, updating a 1980 report on mineral tolerance in domestic animals. Based on a review of current scientific data and information, the report sets a "maximum tolerable level" (MTL) for each mineral as it applies to the diets of farm animals, poultry, and fish. The report includes an analysis of the effects of toxic levels in animal diets, and it identifies elements that pose potential human health concerns. The report recommends research that includes a better characterization of animal exposure to minerals through feedstuffs; a better understanding of the relationship between mineral concentrations in feed and water and the levels in consumer products such as meat, milk, and eggs; and more research on the maximum tolerable level of minerals for aquatic and companion animals.

Book excerpt: Public confidence in the security of the US food and fiber system has been sustained by the quality, variety, abundance, and affordability of agricultural products in the United States. Although the system in place to defend against unintentional threats to agriculture has weaknesses and needs, the demonstrated ability of the system to resolve, accommodate, or manage critical food safety problems, temporary shortages of some commodities, plant and animal infestations and diseases, and natural disasters indicates that, in general, such confidence has been warranted. However, over the last several years, there has been recognition of the possibility and consequences of intentional threats directed at US agriculture. Such attacks could come from foreign or domestic terrorists and use biological, chemical, or radiological agents. They could be directed at the pre harvest (live plant and live animal) or post harvest (processing and distribution) stages of food and fiber production. Countering Agricultural Bioterrorism asseses the vulnerability of US agriculture to intentional threats and provides recommendations needed to strengthen and adapt the US system for defense against biological threats to agriculture.

Book excerpt: Air Emissions from Animal Feeding Operations: Current Knowledge, Future Needs discusses the need for the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency to implement a new method for estimating the amount of ammonia, nitrous oxide, methane, and other pollutants emitted from livestock and poultry farms, and for determining how these emissions are dispersed in the atmosphere. The committee calls for the EPA and the U.S. Department of Agriculture to establish a joint council to coordinate and oversee short - and long-term research to estimate emissions from animal feeding operations accurately and to develop mitigation strategies. Their recommendation was for the joint council to focus its efforts first on those pollutants that pose the greatest risk to the environment and public health.
