This book was released on 2010 with total page 76 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Land tenure in pastoral and agro pastoral areas of Tanzania is under stress. The stress emanates mainly from changing natural and demographic environments. Other underlying causes are social, economic and political changes. In the past three to four decades, both pastoral and agro-pastoral areas have been experiencing rapid population increase, with a national mean population growth rate estimated at 3 per cent per annum (Kurian 1992). This has increased demand for cultivation lands, forcing pastoralists and agro-pastoralists to more marginal areas and triggering off in some cases environmental degradation process. These processes are paralleled by overall climatic changes with concomitant increasing droughts. The combined effect of these processes has culminated into a general decline of pastoral and agro-pastoral communityis welfare and increased livelihood insecurity. This study explored the impacts of these changes in agro-pastoral land use on the physical environment as well as livelihood and welfare of the community in Missungwi District.

Book Synopsis Farmers & Markets in Tanzania by : Stefano Ponte
Download or read book Farmers & Markets in Tanzania written by Stefano Ponte and published by Heinemann Educational Books. This book was released on 2002 with total page 232 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Ponte (Centre for Developmental Research, Denmark) analyzes farmers' livelihood strategies during the upheavals of economic policy reforms in Tanzania. He argues that much of the debate on deregulation and market liberalization has been on a macro-level bases and has been based on aggregate data of dubious value, thus missing the realities of the farmer on the ground. He relates continent-wide information to the specificities of agricultural change, exploring agricultural change from colonial rule to the current day. Agricultural input and credit distributions systems at the district level are investigated and the implementation of liberalization policies are explored at the regional and district levels. Finally, the impact of liberalization on livelihood diversification, poverty, and inequality are portrayed. Annotation copyrighted by Book News, Inc., Portland, OR

Book excerpt: Climate variability affecting and threatening agricultural production and food security of smallholder farmers. It has increased the vulnerability of agricultural outputs and livelihoods of people who predominantly depend on climate sensitive resources. This study aimed at understanding the dynamics, challenges and opportunities of agricultural crop production from the perspective of climate variability to enhence resilience and food production. The study employed a survey method to collect both qualitative and quantitative data. The qualitative were subjected to content and trend analysis, whereas the quantitative analysed using Microsoft excel and SPSS software. The results indicate variations in the agricultural crop production across agro-ecological zones characterised by land fragmentation, lack of information to inform the best adaptation measures and realisation of opportunities accrued from climate variability. Lack of proper measuring units and poor record-keeping compounded the challenges affecting quantification of productivity and production trends. Thus, understanding the challenges and opportunities of climate variability and other stressors is essential in developing adaptation options and minimising adverse effects on agricultural production. This include strengthening capacity of farmers and institutions though awereness raising on improving livelihoods, productivity and agricultural production. Such knowledge and initiatives require an appropriate information and exploitation of opportunities in agricultural production, with particular attention on packaging the information to inform the decision making process for all stakeholders.
Book Synopsis Climate Change, Agriculture, and Food Security in Tanzania by : Channing Arndt
Download or read book Climate Change, Agriculture, and Food Security in Tanzania written by Channing Arndt and published by . This book was released on 2014 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The consequences of climate change for agriculture and food security in developing countries are of serious concern. Due to their reliance on rain-fed agriculture both as a source of income and consumption, many low-income countries are generally considered to be most vulnerable to climate change. Here, we estimate the impact of climate change on food security in Tanzania. Representative climate projections are used in calibrated crop models to predict crop yield changes for 110 districts in Tanzania. These results are in turn imposed on a highly-disaggregated, dynamic economy-wide model of Tanzania. We find that, relative to a no climate change baseline and considering domestic agricultural production as the principal channel of impact, food security in Tanzania appears likely to deteriorate as a consequence of climate change. The analysis points to a high degree of diversity of outcomes (including some favourable outcomes) across climate scenarios, sectors, and regions. The economic modelling indicates that markets have the potential to smooth outcomes on households across regions and income groups, though noteworthy differences in impacts across households persist both by region and by income category.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The world's 58 poorest countries are diverse in many respects, but they share the characteristic of a labor force overwhelmingly dependent on agriculture. Challenging the assumption that mass poverty and chronic hunger are insoluble problems, this book systematically explores the multiple aspects of economic development in these countries, which are home to 60 percent of the world's population. The authors offer a broad-based development strategy to raise incomes through agricultural productivity growth and expanded rural employment. They present rich new information on the rural informal sector and on agriculture-industry interactions, and they analyze the impact of macroeconomic and social policies on the rural economy. Policy instruments aimed at bringing about broad-based development are carefully assessed from fiscal policy to development of hew seeds and farm implements. The book includes detailed case studies of countries that have seized—or missed—development opportunities. Comparison of the successful economic transformations of Japan and the United States shows how key ideas, which the authors call strategic notions, have enabled policymakers to act with foresight. Analyses of strategic choices in China, the Soviet Union, Taiwan, Mexico, Kenya, and Tanzania also show how development strategies that emerge from the real-world political economy reflect a mix of individual interests and strategic notions.
Book Synopsis The Agrarian Question in Tanzania? by : Sam Maghimbi
Download or read book The Agrarian Question in Tanzania? written by Sam Maghimbi and published by Nordic Africa Institute. This book was released on 2011 with total page 76 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: There are about four million peasant families in Tanzania. They farm on the smallest scale, the average farm being two acres in size. The principal agricultural equipment is the hand hoe. Since the onset of the colonial era, those in authority have pursued policies to dominate the peasantry. It is argued that the small scale of operations has contributed to the widespread poverty among farmers. There is still good agricultural land that is not farmed, but the current land tenure of peasants reproduces itself on new farmland. The conclusion is that in order to accelerate agricultural development, land tenure must be institutionalized.
