Book excerpt: Agricultural engineering, developed as an engineering discipline underpinned by physics, applies scientific principles, knowledge, and technological innovations in the agricultural and food industries. During the last century, there was exponential growth in engineering developments, which has improved human wellbeing and radically changed how humans interact with each other and our planet. Among these, “Agricultural Mechanization” is ranked among the top 10 in a list of 20 Top Engineering Achievements of the last century that have had the greatest impact on the quality of life. While many success stories abound, the problems of low appeal among students, identity crises, and limited job opportunities in many climes continue to trouble the discipline’s future in many parts of the world. Yet agriculture and agricultural engineering remain fundamental to assuring food and nutrition security for a growing global population. Agricultural, Biosystems, and Biological Engineering Education provides the first comprehensive global review and synthesis of different agricultural, biosystems, and biological engineering education approaches, including a detailed exposition of current practices from different regions. Key Features: Describes novel approaches to curriculum design and reform Outlines current and emerging epistemology and pedagogies in ABBE education Provides a framework to grow agricultural engineering in Africa and other developing regions Highlights the role of ABBE education in the context of the SDGs Presented in 3 parts and containing 42 chapters, this book covers the historical evolution of agricultural engineering education and discusses the emergence of biological and biosystems engineering education. It will appeal to engineers and other professionals, education planners and administrators, and policy makers in agriculture and other biological industries.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Biology is a critical application area for engineering analysis and design, and students in engineering programs as well as ecologists and environmentalists must be well-versed in the fundamentals of biology as they relate to their field. Biology for Engineers, Second Edition is an introductory text that minimizes unnecessary memorization of connections and classifications and instead emphasizes concepts, technology, and the utilization of living things. Whether students are headed toward a bio-related engineering degree or one of the more traditional majors, biology is so important that all engineering students should know how living things work and act. Emphasizing the ever-present interactions between a biological unit and its physical, chemical, and biological environments, the book provides ample instruction on the basics of physics, chemistry, mathematics, and engineering through a systems approach. It brings together all the concepts one needs to understand the role of biology in modern technology. Classroom-tested at the University of Maryland, this comprehensive text introduces concepts and terminology needed to understand more advanced biology literature. Filled with practical detailed examples, the book presents: Presents scientific principles relevant to biology that all engineers, ecologists and environmentalists must know A discussion of biological responses from the perspective of a broad range of fields such as psychology, human factors, genetics, plant and animal physiology, imaging, control systems, actuary, and medicine Includes end of chapter questions to test comprehension Provides updated material to reflect the latest research developments such as CRISPR. Introduces over 150 interesting application examples, incorporating a number of different engineering disciplines. Ties biological systems properties and behaviors to foundational sciences such as engineering sciences, chemistry, etc.

Book excerpt: This book is for use in introductory courses in colleges of agriculture and in other applications requiring a problematic approach to agriculture. It is intended as a replacement for an Introduction to Agricultural Engineering by Roth, Crow, and Mahoney. Parts of the previous book have been revised and included, but some sections have been removed and new ones has been expanded to include a chapter added. Problem solving on techniques, and suggestions are incorporated throughout the example problems. The topics and treatment were selected for three reasons: (1) to acquaint students with a wide range of applications of engineering principles to agriculture, (2) to present a selection of independent but related, topics, and (3) to develop and enhance the problem solving ability of the students. Each chapter contains educational objectives, introductory material, example problems (where appropriate), and sample problems, with answers, that can be used for self-assessment. Most chapters are self-contained and can be used independently of the others. Those that are sequential are organiZed in a logical order to ensure that the knowledge and skills needed are presented in a previous chapter. As principal author I wish to express my gratitude to Dr. Lawrence O. Roth for his contributions of subject matter and gUidance. I also wish to thank Professor Earl E. Baugher for his expertise as technical editor, and my wife Marsha for her help and patience. HARRY FIELD v 1 Problem Solving OBJECTIVES 1. Be able to define problem solving.

Book excerpt: Machine learning (ML) has recently become popular in chemical and biological sensing applications. ML is a subset of artificial intelligence (AI) and other AI techniques have been used in various chemical and biological sensing. Machine Learning and Artificial Intelligence in Chemical and Biological Sensing covers the theoretical background and practical applications of various ML/AI methods toward chemical and biological sensing. No comprehensive reference text has been available previously to cover the wide breadth of this topic. The Editors have written the first three chapters to firmly introduce the reader to fundamental ML theories that can be used for chemical/biosensing. The subsequent chapters then cover the practical applications with contributions by various experts in the field. They show how ML and AI-based techniques can provide solutions for: 1) identifying and quantifying target molecules when specific receptors are unavailable 2) analyzing complex mixtures of target molecules, such as gut microbiome and soil microbiome 3) analyzing high-throughput and high-dimensional data, such as drug screening, molecular interaction, and environmental toxicant analysis, 4) analyzing complex data sets where fingerprinting approach is needed This book is written primarily for upper undergraduate students, graduate students, research staff, and faculty members at teaching and research universities and colleges who are working on chemical sensing, biosensing, analytical chemistry, analytical biochemistry, biomedical imaging, medical diagnostics, environmental monitoring, and agricultural applications. Presents the first comprehensive reference text on the use of ML and AI for chemical and biological sensing Provides a firm grounding in the fundamental theories on ML and AI before covering the practical applications with contributions by various experts in the field Includes a wide array of practical applications covered, including: E-nose, Raman, SERS, lens-free imaging, multi/hyperspectral imaging, NIR/optical imaging, receptor-free biosensing, paper microfluidics, single molecule analysis in biomedicine, in situ protein characterization, microbial population dynamics, and all-in-one sensor systems
