Book Synopsis Agreeable Leading by : Richard P. Mullin
Download or read book Agreeable Leading written by Richard P. Mullin and published by AllrOneofUs Publishing. This book was released on 2023-02-24 with total page 150 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book wrestles with the question of free will, which the author supports versus a deterministic vision of the universe. Following William James, the author resolves the issue by applying pragmatic ideas tested in reality. The core idea of this work is that true ideas are judged by where they lead us. Unlike materialism, this view is open to a pluralistic universe. This includes a spiritual dimension, in which our consciousness has a transmissive capacity, an ability to pick up inspiration from outside itself. All of this serves as a guide to a richer life, in which we experience harmony with the world by means of "agreeable leading." Last, the author wishes that this was a book he would have read when he was young, and we invite you to do the same.

Book excerpt: The Two Pragmatisms - From Peirce to Rorty maps the main movements within the pragmatist tradition. Two distinct forms of pragmatism are identified, that of Peirce and that of the `second' pragmatism stemming from James' interpretation of Peirce and seen in the work of Dewey and above all Rorty. Both the influential work of Rorty and the way in which he has transformed contemporary philosophy's understanding of pragmatism are clearly explained. The Two Pragmatisms - From Peirce to Rorty is essential reading for those interested in the history of this increasingly influential movement, whether first-time philosophers or more advanced readers.

The book begins by raising basic questions of what is philosophy and whether philosophy has value. It answers resoundingly in the affirmative that it can lead us to a richer and more full life. Highlighting a central benefit, philosophy helps us to distinguish between good and evil, so we can make more life-affirming choices. A foundation is first offered by providing a concise tour of the history of philosophy, from ancient to contemporary times. Then the author describes how three major ethical schools offer a common universal value, which he applies in specific chapters in realms from business to the arts. Book Synopsis What Pragmatism Was by : F. Thomas Burke
Download or read book What Pragmatism Was written by F. Thomas Burke and published by Indiana University Press. This book was released on 2013-06-14 with total page 253 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A history and exploration of this quintessentially American philosophy. F. Thomas Burke shows how the original “maxim of pragmatism” was understood differently by the two earliest American pragmatists, William James and Charles S. Peirce. Burke reconciles these differences by casting pragmatism as a philosophical stance that endorses distinctive conceptions of belief and meaning. In particular, on Burke’s view, a pragmatist conception of meaning as encapsulated in the pragmatic maxim should be understood as both inferentialist and operationalist in character. Burke unravels a complex early history of this philosophical tradition, discusses contemporary conceptions of pragmatism found in current US political discourse, and explores what this quintessentially American philosophy means today.

Book Synopsis Idols of the Odeons by : Andrew Roberts
Download or read book Idols of the Odeons written by Andrew Roberts and published by Manchester University Press. This book was released on 2020-04-23 with total page 436 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Idols of the Odeons examines British film stardom in the post-war era, a time when Hollywood movies were increasingly supplanting the Pinewood/Elstree studio system. The book encompasses the careers of sixteen actors, including Stanley Baker, Diana Dors, Norman Wisdom, Hattie Jacques, Peter Finch and Peter Sellers. Such extremely diverse careers provide the opportunity to explore overlooked films, in addition to examining how the term ‘star’ could apply to a stalwart leading man, a Variety comic, a self-created ‘Vamp’ and a character actor. Above all, this is a book that celebrates, with idiosyncratic humour and warmth, how these actors accomplished much of their best work during the transitional period between the Rank/ABPC roster of stars and the US domination of the British film industry.

The question "What is truth?" is so philosophical that it can seem rhetorical. Yet truth matters, especially in a "post-truth" society in which lies are tolerated and facts are ignored. If we want to understand why truth matters, we first need to understand what it is. The Nature of Truth offers the definitive collection of classic and contemporary essays on analytic theories of truth. This second edition has been extensively revised and updated, incorporating both historically central readings on truth's nature as well as up-to-the-moment contemporary essays. Seventeen new chapters reflect the current trajectory of research on truth.
Book Synopsis An Idealistic Pragmatism by : M.B. Mahowald
Download or read book An Idealistic Pragmatism written by M.B. Mahowald and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 191 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: When I first became acquainted with the thought of the American philoso pher Josiah Royce, two factors particularly intrigued me. The first was Royce's claim that the notion of community was his main metaphysical tenet; the second was his close association with the two American pragmatists, Charles Sanders Peirce and William James. Regarding the first factor, I was struck by the fact that a philosopher who died in 1916 should emphasize a topic of such contemporary significance not only in philosophy but in so many other vital fields as well (sociology, psychology, politics, theology - to name only a few). Regarding the second, I was curious as to whether the pragmatism of Peirce and James might have influenced Royce during the course of their professional and personal contacts. Similarly, I wondered whether the idealism of Royce might have affected the thought of Peirce and James. To have appeased my curiosity in regard to all three thinkers, however, would have required (at least) three books. As a start I have now appeased it in regard to one. In researching the writings of Royce I found my way to the Houghton Library and to the Archives of Harvard University at Cambridge, Massa chusetts, where the unpublished manuscripts of Royce are preserved. (No editing job has yet been done on this bulk of material, though such would certainly be a welcome contribution to American philosophy.

Download or read book Pragmatism written by William James and published by tredition. This book was released on 2022-04-29 with total page 170 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Pragmatism - William James - A profoundly influential figure in American psychology, William James (1842–1910) was also a philosopher of note who adopted Charles S. Peirce's theories as a basis for his own conception of pragmatism. For James, this meant an emphasis on "radical empiricism" and the concept that the meaning of any idea — philosophical, political, social, or otherwise — has validity only in terms of its experiential and practical consequences. In this book, James tests competing systems of thought in the "marketplace of actual experience" to determine their validity. In other words, he examines whether adopting a particular philosophical theory or way of looking at the world makes an actual difference in individual conduct. James not only makes a strong case for his own ideas but also mounts a powerful attack against the transcendental and rationalist tradition.
