Book excerpt: It is perhaps because fishes live in a buoyant medium, whether it be fresh or sea water, that they show a diversity in body shapes that is unparalleled by other vertebrates. There is also a unique diversity in the modes of reproduction, whether by external or internal fertilization, and this, with the morphology and fine structure of the reproducti

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "This is a coursebook and reference guide for ichthyology courses that will also serve as a tool for ichthyologists, fisheries scientists, marine biologists, and vertebrate zoologists. It will cover the basic anatomy and diversity of all 62 orders of fishes, focusing on the distinguishing characteristics of approximately 180 of the most commonly encountered fish families. Each family will be diagnosed with easily observed characteristics and clear photos--many in color and from living specimens. This guide will be distinctive through the use of photographs of preserved specimens primarily from the Scripps Institution of Oceanography Marine Vertebrate Collection, supplemented by radiographs and additional illustrations of key characters. The goal is to give ichthyology students, fisheries scientists, marine biologists, vertebrate zoologists, and others with an interest or stake in the diversity of fishes a broad overview of the morphological diversity of fishes, arranged in a modern classification system. For students, it's a natural complement to primary ichthyology textbooks, which don't cover the breadth of morphological characteristics necessary to identify fish"--Provided by publisher.

She’d only meant to steal a cadaver for her relentless quest to become a doctor. In a stroke of bad luck, Rafe is unable to erase Cassandra’s memory of their encounter. He has no choice but to take her prisoner, under vampire law. The Elders give him thirty nights to decide whether to kill her or Change her. For reasons he can’t reveal, Rafe can’t do either. Despite being imprisoned by a monstrously scarred vampire, Cassandra isn’t afraid of Rafe. In fact, she insists on experimental operations on his bad arm, rendered useless from being burned by the sun. Undone by her passion and beauty, Rafe agrees to a trade. For each experiment, she must give him something he’s never dared ask for since before he was burned: A kiss. Book excerpt: Isabella is a novel of its time when life was hard and intimidating, often short and frequently brutal in the cause of making many rich men even richer on both sides of the Atlantic. Even so, there were more people willing to stand up to legislate for the cause in America just as happened in Great Britain 50 years earlier to help the oppressed escape to live a better life. It is a story of love during the Civil War when unlikely people made individual efforts to play a part in overcoming slavery. The story alternates between gunrunning on the Eastern Seaboard, a rescued slave’s efforts to repay society in Boston and Canada and a wealthy young lady’s adventure up the Mississippi taking a young girl to Canada for safety and her involvement with the underground railway.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: 1. Nekton as an ecomorphological type of biont The term nekton was suggested and used for the first time in 1890 by E. Haeckel in his book Plankton-Studien. Etymologically the word nekton derives from the Greek VTJKTTJP, i.e. swimming. As Haeckel defined it, nekton describes collectively all swimming animals that are 'free to choose their path', i.e. can resist a strong current of water and, distinct from planktonic animals, go where they wish. While giving a general idea of the dividing line between plankton and nekton, Haeckel's definition, which has played an important role in shaping our ideas about nekton, today no longer provides a sufficient basis for ecological and functional morphological investigations, since it affords no possibility of quantitatively assessing either the boundary between plankton and nekton or that between nekton and other ecomorphological types of biont. Thus Parin (1968), proceeding from Haeckel's principle, believes that in the epipelagic zone of the ocean the minimum size of nektonic fishes with a well-developed capacity for active swimming may be between 15 and 30 cm, as fishes shorter than 15 cm are unable to counter oceanic currents. Meanwhile young Leucaspius (Leucaspius delineatus) only 1.5 cm long, observed by this writer in ponds near Moscow proved capable of active horizontal migrations across the entire body of water, which, if Haeckel's definition is accepted, brings the border between planktonic and nektonic fish in this case to between 1.5 and 2.0 cm.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The goal of the book Fish Biology and Fisheries is to help integrate the study of fish biology with the study of fisheries. One might not expect these two subjects to need further integration. However, strong declines in many fish stocks around the world, combined with growing concerns about the impact of fisheries on marine and freshwater biodiversity, are raising new questions about aspects of fish biology that have traditionally dwelt outside mainstream fisheries research. Fisheries form an important sector of the country's economy in terms of food supply, employment, income and foreign exchange earnings. Fishes are one of the important sources of cheap protein food for the people and millions of fishermen and several industries depend on this source. Lack of a comprehensive treatise on the biology of fishes has prompted this humble piece of work leading to Essentials of Fish Biology. A wide coverage of fish biology will make it of interest not only to ichthyologist but to professional fishery biologist as well desiring to learn basic structure and function of fish body in daily life of the fish. This is an ideal textbook of fish biology which will serve as valuable work for undergraduates and graduates looking for a comprehensive source on a wide variety of topics in fish Biology and Fisheries.

Book excerpt: The relative way to deal with immunology can be followed to the time of Pasteur and Metchnikov in which perceptions in regards to outside acknowledgment in spineless creatures was a factor in the advancement of the primary ideas that made the establishment of what now is the expansive field of immunology. With each major exploratory and theoretical achievement, the traditional, yet fundamental, question has been solicited "e;are the resistant frameworks from phylogenetically primitive vertebrates and spineless creatures like that of warm blooded animals?"e; Somewhat shockingly for the jawed vertebrates, the general answer has been a qualified type of "e;yes"e;, though for agnathans and invertebrate phyla it has been "e;no"e; up until this point. The obvious suddenness in the presence of the insusceptible arrangement of vertebrates is connected to the presentation of the substantial age of the decent variety of its antigen particular receptors. Consequently the inquiries with respect to the beginning and development of the particular insusceptible framework rotate around this wonder. As for the birthplace of the framework (beside the origin of the revising hardware itself, the investigation of which is still in its outset) one can make inquiries about the cell and atomic settings in which the instrument was presented.
