Models that are dynamic in nature are required if we are to really understand the complex notion of sustainable competitive advantage. New tools are required to tackle challenges of how firms should compete in environments characterized by both exogeneous shocks and intense endogenous competition. Agent-based modelling of firms' strategies offers an alternative analytical approach, where individual firm or component parts of a firm are modelled, each with their own strategy. Where traditional models can assume homogeneity of actors, agent-based models simulate each firm individually. This allows experimentation of strategic moves, which is particularly important where reactions to strategic moves are non-trivial. This Element introduces agent-based models and their use within management, reviews the influential NK suite of models, and offers an agenda for the development of agent-based models in strategic management.

Results indicate that the relative performances of exploitative strategies vs those characterized by an opportunistic combination of exploitation and exploration, are contingent on the characteristics of the environment in which the firm operates and the quality of the corporate strategic plans that determine the initial strategic positioning of the firm.

Book excerpt: Despite its importance, the relationship between an organization and its environment is difficult to study through real-world, empirical analysis because of the ambiguities and complexities involved. This work advances our understanding of how organizations interact with their environments by modeling expected environmental complexities in an multiple agent-based computer simulation. Integrating principles derived from organization theory and computational organization theory, an agent-based simulation rule set is developed, and then extended to the study issues of diversification and CEO compensation, two unresolved areas in strategic management. With regard to diversification, results obtained through various ANOVA tests, difference tests, and multiple regressions found generally that a related diversification strategy was positively associated with profitability, while unrelated diversification was consistently found to be unprofitable, but was related to greater longevity. Furthermore, diversification was found to be a more prevalent strategy in harsher environments, and there appeared to be a tendency for the most profitable agents to choose a very conservative, related strategy under high-harshness conditions, and a moderate, related strategy under low-harshness conditions. CEO pay results using regression indicated that pay through agency interacts positively with pay through stakeholder performance, while a series of histograms for agents in different environmental extremes indicated that profit-seeking agents moved away from a high-stakeholder proportion and toward a more moderate proportion. Conversely, it was apparently profitable to incorporate a higher proportion of fit-based pay when conditions faced by the agent are more difficult. The implications of the results are discussed in light of the extant literature on diversification and corporate governance.

Book excerpt: With an increased emphasis on joint service operations, smaller force sizes and rapid deployment, the team paradigm within the U.S. military is moving more toward those with distributed members. Team members are often isolated from one another due to geographic or vehicular constraints, as in a "command on the move" situation. An undesirable outcome of this teaming arrangement is a possible reduction of team members' abilities to know and understand what others are doing around them, what decisions they are making, or what information they are using. Training under these circumstances also becomes complicated since members may be geographically distributed, and bringing everyone together under the same roof simultaneously is expensive in terms of time and travel, and is particularly difficult to schedule. An intelligent agent-based platform was developed as a proposed method to assist in the training of distributed teams. Agents within the platform were designed to represent specific functions within a supply chain management team. An experiment was performed to examine the training efficacy of the agent-based platform against a traditional instructional training technique. Results indicate that an agent-based platform can be an effective training tool, but larger studies should be performed before drawing firm conclusions.
