Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Looking at my daughter's wedding photographs five years ago, I noticed a matronly woman on the cusp of entering middle age. I have no intention of ending up looking like my mother or grandmother at that age, plump, not necessarily obese, was the order of the day. I decided to adopt the health, rather than weight control approach, and with my own philosophy in addressing image, weight and confidence issues, that afflict many. I hope by sharing my experiences with others will motivate them to take control of who they want and can be. When my mother died relatively young of a terminal illness despite her general well-being and love of life, especially her Chinese opera performances and travelling with her friends, it was almost our steady family was shaken up. At the same time my two growing children were exhibiting all the adolescence and teenage growing pains. It forced me to take stock and made phenomenal changes to our lives to keep my family intact. The journey to bring them up in the best way I know how, ensued a learning experience invaluable in my understanding of relationship and how powerful it can be to change lives.

Book excerpt: “Wow. This book totally rocks. It arrived on a day when I was in deep confusion and sadness about my age. Everything about it, from my invisibility to my neck. Within four or five wise, passionate pages, I had found insight, illumination, and inspiration. I never use the word empower, but this book has empowered me.” —Anne Lamott, New York Times bestselling author Author, activist, and TED speaker Ashton Applewhite has written a rousing manifesto calling for an end to discrimination and prejudice on the basis of age. In our youth obsessed culture, we’re bombarded by media images and messages about the despairs and declines of our later years. Beauty and pharmaceutical companies work overtime to convince people to purchase products that will retain their youthful appearance and vitality. Wrinkles are embarrassing. Gray hair should be colored and bald heads covered with implants. Older minds and bodies are too frail to keep up with the pace of the modern working world and olders should just step aside for the new generation. Ashton Applewhite once held these beliefs too until she realized where this prejudice comes from and the damage it does. Lively, funny, and deeply researched, This Chair Rocks traces her journey from apprehensive boomer to pro-aging radical, and in the process debunks myth after myth about late life. Explaining the roots of ageism in history and how it divides and debases, Applewhite examines how ageist stereotypes cripple the way our brains and bodies function, looks at ageism in the workplace and the bedroom, exposes the cost of the all-American myth of independence, critiques the portrayal of elders as burdens to society, describes what an all-age-friendly world would look like, and offers a rousing call to action. It’s time to create a world of age equality by making discrimination on the basis of age as unacceptable as any other kind of bias. Whether you’re older or hoping to get there, this book will shake you by the shoulders, cheer you up, make you mad, and change the way you see the rest of your life. Age pride!

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Yale professor and leading expert on the psychology of successful aging, Dr. Becca Levy, draws on her ground-breaking research to show how age beliefs can be improved so they benefit all aspects of the aging process, including the way genes operate and the extension of life expectancy by 7.5 years. The often-surprising results of Levy’s science offer stunning revelations about the mind-body connection. She demonstrates that many health problems formerly considered to be entirely due to the aging process, such as memory loss, hearing decline, and cardiovascular events, are instead influenced by the negative age beliefs that dominate in the US and other ageist countries. It’s time for all of us to rethink aging and Breaking the Age Code shows us how to do just that. Based on her innovative research, stories that range from pop culture to the corporate boardroom, and her own life, Levy shows how age beliefs shape all aspects of our lives. She also presents a variety of fascinating people who have benefited from positive age beliefs as well as an entire town that has flourished with these beliefs. Breaking the Age Code is a landmark work, presenting not only easy-to-follow techniques for improving age beliefs so they can contribute to successful aging, but also a blueprint to reduce structural ageism for lasting change and an age-just society.

Millions and millions of untold stories must have happened to them being a commodity of commerce, a chip to settle scores among men, or simply a tool to use. The value of a female can be zilch; there is no need to elaborate on this. However, all this are slowly changing, mainly through education and the fight for rights as human beings, not chattels. The change is not complete and never will be, because of the evolving societal values placed on woman. The story of early migrants, mainly from southern China, to escape famine and start a new life in a yet undeveloped Southeast Asia, form the threads of the fabric that weave into the new society made up the large diaspora of immigrants.

Book excerpt: From a leading prison abolitionist, a moving memoir about coming of age in Brooklyn and surviving incarceration—and a call to break free from all the cages that confine us. Marlon Peterson grew up in 1980s Crown Heights, raised by Trinidadian immigrants. Amid the routine violence that shaped his neighborhood, Marlon became a high-achieving and devout child, the specter of the American dream opening up before him. But in the aftermath of immense trauma, he participated in a robbery that resulted in two murders. At nineteen, Peterson was charged and later convicted. He served ten long years in prison. While incarcerated, Peterson immersed himself in anti-violence activism, education, and prison abolition work. In Bird Uncaged, Peterson challenges the typical “redemption” narrative and our assumptions about justice. With vulnerability and insight, he uncovers the many cages—from the daily violence and trauma of poverty, to policing, to enforced masculinity, and the brutality of incarceration—created and maintained by American society. Bird Uncaged is a twenty-first-century abolitionist memoir, and a powerful debut that demands a shift from punishment to healing, an end to prisons, and a new vision of justice.

Tresstéanna finds herself now whole in mind, body, and heart, but she also finds herself in trouble once again. Her new quest is to return the Globe of Corpuscle to the dark and hazardous cavern of the Kylix. But being in danger isn’t a shock anymore, and at least this time she finds herself in Kriston’s arms. Kriston, still recovering from injuries, discovers himself once again on a quest. This time he’s surrounded by friends, but his number one concern is the queen of Valorna. Following the dangerous journey through the Kylix, Tresstéanna now finds herself a small queen in a very large land. One where giants rule and enslave those who are gifted with magic. Her mission to return the goddess Genoa to her resting place has now been halted while she and her friends fight to reunite with the others from Genoa, including her fiancé, Kriston. Kriston recovers from his recent injuries sustained in the dark tunnel of the Kylix only to discover his love, Tresstéanna, has been ripped from his arms. Now he finds himself in a century-old battle between two peoples in an unfamiliar land called Midzark, a world nothing like Genoa, as he and his band struggle to free their friends from the giants’ grip. THE GIFTED The conclusion of the Genoa Chronicles. For Tresstéanna and her band of gifted friends the struggle for freedom continues. The Queen of Valorna is still imprisoned within the giant’s palace. Forced into servitude and charged with teaching the royal Grands magic, her and her friends hatch a plan to gain their freedom. Kriston struggles to return to Tresstéanna’s side and free her and the other gifted from the clutches of the giants.
