Book excerpt: New Zealand has to rebuild the majority of its second-largest city after a devastating series of earthquakes – a unique challenge for a developed country in the twenty-first century. The 2010-2011 earthquakes fundamentally disrupted the conventions by which the people of Christchurch lived. The exhausting and exhilarating mix of distress, uncertainty, creativity, opportunities, divergent opinions and competing priorities generates an inevitable question: how do we know if the right decisions are being made? Once in Lifetime: City-building after Disaster in Christchurch offers the first substantial critique of the Government’s recovery plan, presents alternative approaches to city-building andarchives a vital and extraordinary time. It features photo and written essays from journalists, economists, designers, academics, politicians, artists, publicans and more. Once in a Lifetime presents a range of national and international perspectives on city-building and post-disaster urban recovery.

Book Synopsis Horae Apocalypticae Vol. 3 by : E. B. ELLIOT
Download or read book Horae Apocalypticae Vol. 3 written by E. B. ELLIOT and published by Lulu.com. This book was released on 2015-11-10 with total page 444 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Horae Apocalypticae is a commentary on the apocalypse, critical and historical; including also an examination of the chief prophecies of Daniel. It is doubtless the most elaborate work ever produced on the Apocalypse. Editors Note, 2018 Quin. Ed. E. B Elliot finished his great work about the year 1860. The nature of the Historicist method of interpretation is such that the line of fulfilled prophecy is continually moving with the passage of time. The interpretation of which necessarily requires a certain amount of speculation which must be verified before accepted as true. As well intentioned as many are the passage of time will overthrow the best of expositors on some points of which time would reveal to be mere speculation. Though the bulk of Mr. Elliot's work still stands the test of time, time has unveiled a more likely or true interpretation on some points. The editors herein have made some updates commensurate.

Download or read book Sketches of Prominent Tennesseans written by William S. Speer and published by Genealogical Publishing Com. This book was released on 2010-04 with total page 592 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "I had a native ambition to rise from obscurity and make myself useful in the world, to shine and be distinguished." So said the Hon. Neil S. Brown, one of the 259 prominent 19th-century Tennesseans profiled in this extraordinary book. It is this kind of unique first-hand biographical information that makes this work unequaled in the canon of Tennessee genealogical literature. Not only did compiler William S. Speer have the unparalleled opportunity to interview a number of the featured Tennesseans himself, he also was able to garner--and include in this book--thousands and thousands of names of their family members, friends, and colleagues. The biographical sketches include numerous details about the lives of the subjects and their families. In addition, the compiler offers insight into the personal, professional, and sometimes even physical characteristics that made each of these men a success.

Download or read book Margaret Fuller written by Charles Capper and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 1994-11-03 with total page 456 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: With this first volume of a two-part biography of the Transcendentalist critic and feminist leader, Margaret Fuller, Capper has launched the premier modern biography of early America's best-known intellectual woman. Based on a thorough examination of all the firsthand sources, many of them never before used, this volume is filled with original portraits of Fuller's numerous friends and colleagues and the influential movements that enveloped them. Writing with a strong narrative sweep, Capper focuses on the central problem of Fuller's life--her identity as a female intellectual--and presents the first biography of Fuller to do full justice to its engrossing subject. This first volume chronicles Fuller's "private years": her gradual, tangled, but fascinating emergence out of the "private" life of family, study, Boston-Cambridge socializing, and anonymous magazine-writing, to the beginnings of her rebirth as antebellum America's female prophet-critic. Capper's biography is at once an evocative portrayal of an extraordinary woman and a comprehensive study of an avant-garde American intellectual type at the beginning of its first creation.
