However, in the African American community the attitudes have not been as accepting. Thompson, Bazile, and Akbar (2004) documented that African Americans had utilized alternative resources such as friends, the church and other community resources, in attending to commonly treatable mental health disorders (e.g., depression, anxiety). The purpose of this dissertation is to discover the attitudes of African American psychologists toward psychotherapy. Jordan, Bogat, and Smith (2001) hypothesized that African American professional psychologists will be the future of conducting research with African Americans, because of their cultural knowledge, communal ties and psychological professionalism. This development could have huge implications in changing the attitudes of the African American communitys position towards psychotherapy, depending on these psychologists own views of psychotherapy for African Americans. Eighty-nine African American psychologists served as participants. They were asked to respond to scales that measured attitudes of receiving professional psychological help, Africentrism, and psychological stigma. The participants were surveyed electronically using Survey Monkey and email. Data analyses using correlational analyses and ANOVAs determined that African American psychologists with more positive attitudes towards receiving professional psychological help and who indicate a strong identification with Africentric values are less likely to associate social stigma with psychological treatment. There were no significant differences with regard to the African American psychologists gender, educational level, area of work expertise, and years of professional experience and their scores on three measures, the Attitude Toward Seeking Professional Psychological Help Scale (Fischer and Turner, 1970), Africentrism (Grills and Longshore, 1996), and Social Stigma for Receiving Psychological Help (Komiya, et al., 2000). This study shed light on foundational aspects of African American psychologists attitudes. It appeared that many variables, including education and training from the professional psychological community, may have had a positive effect on African American psychologists attitudes towards help-seeking behavior and psychotherapy when compared to the views of African Americans in the community.

Book excerpt: The purpose of this study was to examine the relationship between racial identity, attitudes toward utilizing counseling services, and religious commitment (the independent variables) as predictors of intention to utilize counseling services and self-disclosure (the dependent variables) among Black adults ages 25 to 50. Data were collected from 100 participants with women comprising 75% of the sample. Results showed that pre-encounter and religious commitment were negatively associated with intention to utilize counseling services and self-disclosure. Second, internalization and attitudes were predictors of intention to utilize counseling services and self-disclosure in counseling. These results make an important contribution to research with an emphasis on psychological help-seeking behavior within the Black community. When designing interventions for the Black population, the demographic variables, previous experience, overall satisfaction with professional providers, attitudes toward seeking professional counseling help, and an individual's level of religious commitment should be carefully evaluated. Further, a collaboration between religious organizations within the Black community and professional counseling centers can assist with referrals potentially increasing utilization rates.

Book excerpt: This dissertation used an exploratory, cross-sectional research design to: (1) understand African-American Christians attitudes toward religious and professional help-seeking; (2) understand whether or not African-American Christians are seeking help from their church leaders to assist in the amelioration of serious personal and/or mental health issues in lieu of mental health professionals; and (3) understand the dynamics of the religious help-seeking relationship. Using an electronic survey, a sample of 146 self-identified African-American Christians participated in the study. The findings revealed that the sample had favorable attitudes toward professional help-seeking, which contradicts previous literature indicating resistance to seek professional care. Also, the sample held favorable attitudes toward religious help-seeking albeit slightly. Correlation analysis revealed a weak, positive correlation between the religious and professional help-seeking. The Attitude Toward Religious Help-Seeking Scale (ATRHSS) was designed for use in the study as no other instrument was available to measure the attitudes of African-Americans regarding religious help-seeking. The ATRHSS had good internal consistency with a Cronbach alpha of .720. Specifically designed to reveal the attitudes of African-American Christian members of the Black Church, a principle components factor analysis revealed the latent components of Significance of Faith and Pastoral Disapproval as factors associated with an unexpected reservation toward religious help-seeking. This is content not discussed previously in the social work literature. Additionally, the concepts of mistrust (related to the confidential nature of pastoral counseling) and skepticism (related to the pastoral counselors professional ability to render such services) were prevalent among those surveyed. Lastly, when presented with 22 issues which could be the focus of clinical intervention and the choice of professional resource to address them (social worker, counselor, psychologist/psychiatrist, pastoral counselor), social workers were never chosen as the preferred provider. Ultimately the findings suggest two things: (1) that social works wholesale abdication of clinical responsibility for African-Americans in favor of a perceived preference for informal, indigenous sources of support may be inaccurate and (2) that the lack of preference for social work practitioners among respondents necessitates an examination of the professional shortcomings that keep potential clients from seeking out social work services. -- Abstract.
