Book Synopsis Battling the Plantation Mentality by : Laurie Beth Green
Download or read book Battling the Plantation Mentality written by Laurie Beth Green and published by Univ of North Carolina Press. This book was released on 2009-12-08 with total page 432 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: African American freedom is often defined in terms of emancipation and civil rights legislation, but it did not arrive with the stroke of a pen or the rap of a gavel. No single event makes this more plain, Laurie Green argues, than the 1968 Memphis sanitation workers' strike, which culminated in the assassination of Martin Luther King Jr. Exploring the notion of "freedom" in postwar Memphis, Green demonstrates that the civil rights movement was battling an ongoing "plantation mentality" based on race, gender, and power that permeated southern culture long before--and even after--the groundbreaking legislation of the mid-1960s. With its slogan "I AM a Man!" the Memphis strike provides a clarion example of how the movement fought for a black freedom that consisted of not only constitutional rights but also social and human rights. As the sharecropping system crumbled and migrants streamed to the cities during and after World War II, the struggle for black freedom touched all aspects of daily life. Green traces the movement to new locations, from protests against police brutality and racist movie censorship policies to innovations in mass culture, such as black-oriented radio stations. Incorporating scores of oral histories, Green demonstrates that the interplay of politics, culture, and consciousness is critical to truly understanding freedom and the black struggle for it.

Book excerpt: The mood in the world today is such that either you believe that Black people are natural slaves, or you believe that White people are evil by nature. In either case, you are in a stalemate: you can't change "nature," can you? -- Yet, not only is it very improbable for someone to turn up slave or evil just by nature; it is neither demonstrable that evil is conditioned by skin colour. The question, here, is: why should evil be White; and why should evil's target be Black? In other words, what is wrong with evil always tending to choose Black? In fact, the actual question is: what is wrong with Black people always tending to be evil's preferred targets? -- This book simply personifies a totally different type of intuition, where the most unsuspected a " yet, the most damning a " causes of the suffering and the struggles of Africans in today's world are not only laid open with courage, but also resolved with vision.

Book Synopsis Re-Inventing Africa's Development by : Jong-Dae Park
Download or read book Re-Inventing Africa's Development written by Jong-Dae Park and published by Springer. This book was released on 2018-12-31 with total page 456 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This open access book analyses the development problems of sub-Sahara Africa (SSA) from the eyes of a Korean diplomat with knowledge of the economic growth Korea has experienced in recent decades. The author argues that Africa's development challenges are not due to a lack of resources but a lack of management, presenting an alternative to the traditional view that Africa's problems are caused by a lack of leadership. In exploring an approach based on mind-set and nation-building, rather than unity – which tends to promote individual or party interests rather than the broader country or national interests – the author suggests new solutions for SSA's economic growth, inspired by Korea's successful economic growth model much of which is focused on industrialisation. This book will be of interest to researchers, policymakers, NGOs and governmental bodies in economics, development and politics studying Africa's economic development, and Korea's economic growth model.
