Whether spoken with love from a grandparent, delivered with passion by a pastor in a pulpit, or offered from knowing stranger with hair peppered with grey, there are certain phrases that have been cited and shared time and time again within the Black community. This book highlights just fifteen African-American proverbs, though countless more exist. Like the elders who use them, they offer lessons in guidance and grace to all those who are willing to listen and learn.

Book excerpt: Mama Said.is an effort to record, for future generations, the words of wisdom from our ancestors. It is not intended to be a scholarly thesis. Rather, it is a fond remembrance of the teachings of our mothers. It is a realization that we are our mother's children and that the same advice we thought we had heard enough of, we are now giving to our children. In doing so, we are, perhaps unwittingly passing our culture down to another generation. Our mothers' voices were ones of wisdom. They gave us words of wisdom that had been passed down from their mamas and other women of the village. Such wisdom had a special energy: it affirmed the truth. In many instances, the wisdom was deeply rooted in the African-American culture and in the Bible. Mama's wisdom did not require big words or dissertations. Quite the contrary, all that was required was common sense and plain words. Mama used proverbs to express in a few words universal truths and undeniable wisdom. This wisdom has never gone out of style. It is as relevant today as it was when we were children and our mothers were young women.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: As The Old Folks Usta' Say... records the proverbs, sayings and folk-wit from the rich oral tradition of African-American history. In over 250 hilarious, wise and witty one-liners, the voices of old-school wisdom come to life on these pages. A welcome change from African proverbs, these sayings are exclusively from the American experience, Ebonics and all! You'll laugh, you may even cry, as you remember the guiding words of your parents or grandparents. You'll be touched with pride in your heritage. You'll learn some witty and concise responses to say to your children. As they remember and repeat them to their children, your words will become a cherished memory. Los Angeles, California -- Is it ever correct to use Ebonics? Will recognition of Ebonics by the educational established condemn an entire generation of African-American students to failure? Heated debate and controversy continue as a key factor is often overlooked: context. Ebonics, in proper context, is a valid and relevant form of language in the classroom and beyond. Ebonics is not just street slang with fractures of the verb To Be. Past generations of African-Americans who lacked formal education developed a unique, emphatic dialect which they used to express themselves eloquently, often in proverbs and sayings which endure to this day. In As The Old Folks Usta' Say... Black Proverbs, Sayings and Folk-wit, Ebonics occurs in a natural context. Readers will develop a new appreciation and respect for its power to communicate. Each generation in the family will enjoy the over 250 hilarious, wise and witty adages. Devoted exclusively to African-American oral literature, this book is a refreshing change from run-of-the-millethnic proverbs. Parents, teachers, preachers and other speakers will welcome this new resource for life lessons from the old school.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Another book of quotations? Indeed there are numerous excellent extant anthologies of quotations, but these tend to be very broad, with a bias toward classical and well-known authors; those works which document the contributions of Black authors have tended to focus on African-Americans, considerable as their output is. Undeniable recognition of this prevalence is reflected in the title of the present volume which pays homage to W. E. B. Du Bois? classic work and in the preponderance of entries from American sources. Nevertheless, effort has been made to cast a wider net to capture under-represented and unfamiliar voices. Khemetic texts preserved in papyri and stelae are the earliest literature to have survived, followed by the writings of North African Romans and Ethiopian philosophers and clerics, and the lately recovered Timbuktu manuscripts from their repositories in the desert sands of Mali. The Transatlantic slave experience gave rise to the slave narratives and abolitionist literature from both sides of the Atlantic, which remained predominant right up to the 20th century. Post-Emancipation under colonial rule and white domination, Black poetry and prose emerged, adhering to prevailing standards, evidenced typically in the work of Phillis Wheatley and the sonnets of Claude McKay. With the Civil Rights and Black Power movements would come iconoclastic expressions of protest and identity. There is a sizeable body of literature by Black authors from Africa and the diaspora who speak to universal values and eternal verities. This anthology of their work focuses on the inner life, on personal development and self-actualization. 3000 quotations have been selected to inspire, enlightenand encourage; they have been arranged in 200 psycho-spiritual categories and in chronological order. The resulting timeline of thought in itself is useful and instructive as it demonstrates very clearly the evolution of consciousness evident in the contemporary thinking on particular subjects. Like its predecessor, Wisdom for the Soul: Five Millennia of Prescriptions for Spiritual Healing, this volume contains a full biographical index and bibliographical references. Much of the material is anthologized here for the first time.

Book excerpt: Who is addressing the African American condition? In RAAW: Rediscovering African American Wisdom, author Joseph W. Shorter III attempts to explore American life from the unique perspective of a thirty-something black male. Shorter approaches common issues found in most American families, but he specifically focuses on African Americans and how they have contributed to society at large. He does not intend his questions to cause an explosion of rebirth, but rather to begin a process of self-reflection and understanding by peeling back the layers of the everyday humdrum. Shorter also addresses the feelings of victimization in the African American community, pointing out that remaining a victim to circumstances is a choice and that black society has the power within to do something about it. Because many African Americans blame their state of existence on every outside force possible, Shorter believes that it is imperative for them to take responsibility to facilitate awareness. Through the use of anecdotes, poems, quotes, and quizzes, Shorter creates a highly readable discussion on the African American experience. RAAW presents a compelling argument for change within the black community.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The men and women who shaped our world—in their own words. The Wisdom Library invites you on a journey through the lives and works of the world’s greatest thinkers and leaders. Compiled by scholars, this series presents excerpts from the most important and revealing writings of the most remarkable minds of all time. THE WISDOM OF W.E.B. DU BOIS “Throughout history, the powers of single blacks flash here and there like falling stars, and die sometimes before the world has rightly gauged their brightness.” Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., wrote of W.E.B. Du Bois, “History cannot ignore [him] because history has to reflect truth, and Dr. Du Bois was a tireless explorer and a gifted discoverer of social truths. His singular greatness lay in his quest for truth about his own people.” Du Bois was the first African-American to receive a Ph.D. from Harvard (1896). A brilliant writer and speaker, he was the outstanding African-American intellectual of his time. His lifelong active struggle for racial equality and civil rights resulted in the founding of both the Niagara Movement and the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People (NAACP). As editor of the NAACP’s magazine, The Crisis, Du Bois presented the literary genius of many of the Harlem Renaissance’s most compelling voices; and his own works—the sociological study The Philadelphia Negro and his famous 1903 treatise, The Souls of Black Folk—eloquently delineated the African-American struggle for identity in America. During his lifetime, Du Bois was a powerful force in academia, literature, civil rights, and the peace movement. Using excerpts from his many books as well as from articles, essays, poems, letters, and speeches, The Wisdom of W.E.B. Du Bois provides a telling portrait of the man and his groundbreaking ideas. It is a tribute to a voice that would not be silenced and to a pioneer who, in his passion for justice movingly declared, “the cost of liberty is less than the price of repression.”
