Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Since 2000, the District has achieved important public benefits from the redevelopment of city- owned land into mixed-use and mixed-income spaces. However, in some cases, deals intended to provide substantial affordable housing ultimately scaled back the public benefits and resulted in fewer units than expected with less affordability. The future potential pipeline for public land projects includes small properties throughout the city and major sites such as: Saint Elizabeth‟s East Campus with 183 acres and 2000 planned residential units; Poplar Point with 110 acres; McMillan Sand Filtration site with 25 acres and 800 planned residential units; and Walter Reed Campus with 67 acres. By examining the accomplishments and shortfalls of completed projects, we can identify future opportunities to increase affordable housing and other public benefits." --Page 1.

Book Synopsis The Public Nature of Private Property by : Professor Michael Diamond
Download or read book The Public Nature of Private Property written by Professor Michael Diamond and published by Ashgate Publishing, Ltd.. This book was released on 2013-02-28 with total page 275 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: What, exactly, is private property? Or, to ask the question another way, what rights to intrude does the public have in what is generally accepted as private property? The answer, perhaps surprisingly to some, is that the public has not only a significant interest in regulating the use of private property but also in defining it, and establishing its contour and texture. In The Public Nature of Private Property, therefore, scholars from the United States and the United Kingdom challenge traditional conceptions of private property while presenting a range of views on both the meaning of private property, and on the ability, some might say the requirement, of the state to regulate it.
Book Synopsis Cities and Affordable Housing by : Sasha Tsenkova
Download or read book Cities and Affordable Housing written by Sasha Tsenkova and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2021-09-06 with total page 389 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book provides a comparative perspective on housing and planning policies affecting the future of cities, focusing on people- and place-based outcomes using the nexus of planning, design and policy. A rich mosaic of case studies features good practices of city-led strategies for affordable housing provision, as well as individual projects capitalising on partnerships to build mixed-income housing and revitalise neighbourhoods. Twenty chapters provide unique perspectives on diversity of approaches in eight countries and 12 cities in Europe, Canada and the USA. Combining academic rigour with knowledge from critical practice, the book uses robust empirical analysis and evidence-based case study research to illustrate the potential of affordable housing partnerships for mixed-income, socially inclusive neighbourhoods as a model to rebuild cities. Cities and Affordable Housing is an essential interdisciplinary collection on planning and design that will be of great interest to scholars, urban professionals, architects, planners and policy-makers interested in housing, urban planning and city building.
Book Synopsis Affordable Housing and Public-Private Partnerships by : Nestor M. Davidson
Download or read book Affordable Housing and Public-Private Partnerships written by Nestor M. Davidson and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2016-03-16 with total page 303 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: With distressing statistics about rising cost burdens, increasing foreclosure rates, rising unemployment, falling wages, and widespread homelessness, building affordable housing is one of our most pressing social policy problems. Affordable Housing and Public-Private Partnerships focuses attention on this critical need, as leading experts on affordable housing law and policy come together to address key issues of concern and to suggest appropriate responses for future action. Focusing in particular on how best to understand and implement the joint work of public and private actors in housing, this book considers the real estate aspects of affordable housing law and policy, access to housing, housing finance and affordability, land use, housing regulation and housing issues in a post-Katrina context. Filling a critical gap in the scholarly literature available, this book will be of particular interest to policy-makers, academics, lawyers and students of housing, land use, real estate, property, community development and urban planning

Book Synopsis Affordable Housing Preservation in Washington, DC by : Kathryn Howell
Download or read book Affordable Housing Preservation in Washington, DC written by Kathryn Howell and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2021-05-16 with total page 180 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Affordable Housing Preservation in Washington, DC uses the case of Washington, DC to examine the past, present, and future of subsidized and unsubsidized affordable housing through the lenses of history, governance, and affordable housing policy and planning. Affordable housing policy in the US has often been focused at the federal level where the laws and funding to build new affordable housing historically have been determined. However, as federal housing subsidies from the 1960s expire and federal funding continues to decline, local governments, tenants and advocates face the difficult challenge of trying to retain affordability amid increasing demand for housing in many American cities. Now, instead of amassing land, financing and sponsors, affordable housing stakeholders must understand the existing resident needs and have access to the market for affordable housing. Arguing for preservation as a way of acknowledging a basic right to the city, this book examines the ways that the broad range of stakeholders engage at the building and city levels. This book identifies the underlying challenges that enable or constrain preservation to demonstrate that effective preservation requires long-term relationships that engage residents, build trust and demonstrate a willingness to share power among residents, advocates and the government. It is of great interest to academics and students as well as policy makers and practitioners internationally in the fields of housing studies and policy, urban studies, social policy, sociology and political economy.

Book excerpt: Praise for Developing Affordable Housing A Practical Guide for Nonprofit Organizations Third Edition "Ben Hecht's book explains in clear language everything needed to successfully engage in nonprofit housing development. He tells how to find the money, how to generate good design and quality construction, and how to improve management--a complete, well-researched, and well-presented 'A to Z' approach." --Henry G. Cisneros, former secretary U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development "Ben Hecht's book makes the affordable housing development process accessible for communities and practitioners everywhere. Developing Affordable Housing should be on the bookshelf of every organization that cares about people and wants to make affordable housing possible." --Rey Ramsey, former chairman, Habitat for Humanity CEO, One Economy Corporation "The development of affordable housing is as much a journey as a destination. Ben Hecht's book provides maps and bridges while not losing sight of the challenging but elusive goal of providing decent, safe, and affordable housing." --Nicolas P. Retsinas, Director, Joint Center for Housing Studies Harvard University "In our work to increase the supply of safe, decent homes for those who need homes the most, we appreciate the power of partnerships and the value of information. So does Ben Hecht. Developing Affordable Housing is more than a practical guide for nonprofits--it's a library, a trusted advisor, and a road map. Read this book and benefit from its wisdom." --Stacey D. Stewart, President and CEO, Fannie Mae Foundation
