Book Synopsis Self-help Housing, the Poor, and the State in the Caribbean by : Robert B. Potter
Download or read book Self-help Housing, the Poor, and the State in the Caribbean written by Robert B. Potter and published by Univ. of Tennessee Press. This book was released on 1997 with total page 324 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This collection of essays represents the first in-depth, scholarly treatment of housing policies and conditions throughout the Caribbean. The contributors consider both the performance of the state and the autonomous activities of the poor, making this volume an invaluable contribution to future planning and debate. The essays, each dealing with a specific island or group of islands, collectively address four main themes: the history of housing provision since colonization, current housing conditions, state policies toward housing provision, and the changing relationships between governments, international funding agencies, the private housing sector, and the peoples' responses. These investigations not only highlight the often alarming problems that Caribbean nations face in providing adequate housing for the poor but also implicate governments in past and present failures and poor performances. However, the essays are also filled with useful insights about the ways in which progressive housing policies can be formulated and implemented. For example, the volume suggests that the Caribbean's rich heritage of folk and vernacular architectural styles should be taken into serious account in future planning efforts. In a concluding synthesis chapter, the volume editors argue that a more progressive future is attainable if all parties exhibit the political will that the poor have already demonstrated.

Book Synopsis Cost and affordability of healthy diets across and within countries by : Herforth, A., Bai, Y., Venkat, A., Mahrt, K., Ebel, A. & Masters, W.A.
Download or read book Cost and affordability of healthy diets across and within countries written by Herforth, A., Bai, Y., Venkat, A., Mahrt, K., Ebel, A. & Masters, W.A. and published by Food & Agriculture Org.. This book was released on 2020-12-12 with total page 108 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Price and affordability are key barriers to accessing sufficient, safe, nutritious food to meet dietary needs and food preferences for an active and healthy life. In this study, the least-cost items available in local markets are identified to estimate the cost of three diet types: energy sufficient, nutrient adequate, and healthy (meeting food-based dietary guidelines). For price and availability the World Bank’s International Comparison Program (ICP) dataset is used, which provides food prices in local currency units (LCU) for 680 foods and non-alcoholic beverages in 170 countries in 2017. In addition, country case studies are developed with national food price datasets in United Republic of Tanzania, Malawi, Ethiopia, Ghana and Myanmar. The findings reveal that healthy diets by any definition are far more expensive than the entire international poverty line of USD 1.90, let alone the upper bound portion of the poverty line that can credibly be reserved for food of USD 1.20. The cost of healthy diets exceeds food expenditures in most countries in the Global South. The findings suggest that nutrition education and behaviour change alone will not substantially improve dietary consumption where nutrient adequate and healthy diets, even in their cheapest form, are unaffordable for the majority of the poor. To make healthy diets cheaper, agricultural policies, research, and development need to shift toward a diversity of nutritious foods.

Book Synopsis International Arbitration by : Ben Beaumont
Download or read book International Arbitration written by Ben Beaumont and published by Kluwer Law International B.V.. This book was released on 2022-12-09 with total page 272 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the spirit of Pieter Sanders’s classic Quo Vadis Arbitration? (1999), this far-reaching overview of the state of international arbitration thoroughly assesses the current condition and prospects of arbitration and conciliation with practical, insightful solutions to the new and emerging problems confronting arbitration practice today. A distinguished group of internationally renowned arbitrators, academics, and lawmakers elucidate the ubiquitous evolution towards increased technical complexity, the need for multi-focal and multi-cultural approaches, and the tension between desirable simplicity and indispensable precision that have come to characterize current arbitral practice and procedure. Among the topics covered are the following: remote hearings; reliance on digital technology; cost of arbitration in a post-COVID world; extension of the arbitration agreement to non-signatories; tailoring of ADR techniques to suit the needs of micro, small, and medium-sized enterprises; jurisdictions emerging as new arbitration hubs, e.g., Delaware, the Caribbean, Scotland; evolution of a code of conduct for adjudicators in investment disputes; and the reform of bilateral investment treaties. As Sanders’s 1999 book did at the time, the chapters identify specific improvements and refinements to the entire system as it has developed over recent decades. The book will be a go-to resource for the arbitration community worldwide as a stocktaking of current and ongoing trends in international arbitration. It will enthuse the many lawyers, judges, legislators, and businesspeople to whom it is addressed.
Book Synopsis Zooming into Successful Energy Policies in Latin America and the Caribbean by : María Eugenia Sanin
Download or read book Zooming into Successful Energy Policies in Latin America and the Caribbean written by María Eugenia Sanin and published by Inter-American Development Bank. This book was released on 2019-12-16 with total page 23 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Due to the lack of systematic policy evaluations, identifying successful policies in the Latin American and the Caribbean (LAC) region is a hunting task. Nevertheless, this type of analysis is crucial to inform policymakers in their decision-making process. Herein we contribute to filling this gap by assessing the progress in terms of energy services since the year 2000 and reviewing the policies that have led us to where we are.We focus on three fundamental dimensions in the definition of energy services: access to electricity and clean fuels for cooking, affordability of those energy services and quality considering both service’s interruptions and energy losses. We find that countries that have improved in all these dimensions simultaneously, catching up with the best performers in the region, are the ones that have implemented integrated policies that are part of a pluriannual plan, implemented in a strong institutional environment.Aside from macroeconomic differences, successful energy policies have in common the following characteristics: (i) important institutional reforms already in place by the end of the century; (ii) state-led plans that measure performance accounting for most dimensions simultaneously and including mechanisms to enforce preestablished objectives in targeted population; (iii) appropriate financing mechanisms to ensure affordability; and (iv) partnership with private stakeholders when their participation increases efficiency, adoption of innovation and ensure maintenance, either directly or through the involvement of local communities.Even if the discussion is presented dimension by dimension, two countries appear like having implemented successful integrated policies: Peru and Ecuador. Despite their institutional differences, they have succeeded in increasing access to affordable electricity that is more reliable (with less frequency and duration of interruptions). Additionally, Ecuador has also enhanced efficiency through electricity loss reduction thanks to enforceable performance-based regulation.Aside from these two countries, other countries have also implemented successful policies that have greatly improved one or two of the dimensions mentioned but fail to tackle all the issues simultaneously. This is the case of El Salvador with access to clean cooking and fuel subsidy reform, for example. Similarly, Nicaragua appears as an example in bridging the gap in access and Brazil, Colombia and more recently Argentina are implementing a mechanism to target demand-side subsidies based on family economic means.

Download or read book The State of Food Security and Nutrition in the World 2022 written by Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations and published by Food & Agriculture Org.. This book was released on 2022-07-06 with total page 260 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This year’s report should dispel any lingering doubts that the world is moving backwards in its efforts to end hunger, food insecurity and malnutrition in all its forms. We are now only eight years away from 2030, but the distance to reach many of the SDG 2 targets is growing wider each year. There are indeed efforts to make progress towards SDG 2, yet they are proving insufficient in the face of a more challenging and uncertain context. The intensification of the major drivers behind recent food insecurity and malnutrition trends (i.e. conflict, climate extremes and economic shocks) combined with the high cost of nutritious foods and growing inequalities will continue to challenge food security and nutrition. This will be the case until agrifood systems are transformed, become more resilient and are delivering lower cost nutritious foods and affordable healthy diets for all, sustainably and inclusively.
