Book Synopsis Sustaining Affirmation by : Stephen K. White
Download or read book Sustaining Affirmation written by Stephen K. White and published by Princeton University Press. This book was released on 2000-09-25 with total page 174 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In light of many recent critiques of Western modernity and its conceptual foundations, the problem of adequately justifying our most basic moral and political values looms large. Without recourse to traditional ontological or metaphysical foundations, how can one affirm--or sustain--a commitment to fundamentals? The answer, according to Stephen White, lies in a turn to "weak" ontology, an approach that allows for ultimate commitments but at the same time acknowledges their historical, contestable character. This turn, White suggests, is already underway. His book traces its emergence in a variety of quarters in political thought today and offers a clear and compelling account of what this might mean for our late modern self-understanding. As he elaborates the idea of weak ontology and the broad criteria behind it, White shows how these are already at work in the thought of contemporary writers of seemingly very different perspectives: George Kateb, Judith Butler, Charles Taylor, and William Connolly. Among these thinkers, often thought to be at odds, he exposes the commonalities that emerge around the idea of weak ontology. In its identification of a critical turn in political theory, and its nuanced explanation of that turn, his book both demonstrates and underscores the strengths of weak ontology.

Book Synopsis The View from Here by : R. Jay Wallace
Download or read book The View from Here written by R. Jay Wallace and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2018-02-06 with total page 281 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Must we always later regret actions that were wrong for us to perform at the time? Can there ever be good reason to affirm things in the past that we know were unfortunate? In this original work of moral philosophy, R. Jay Wallace shows that the standpoint from which we look back on our lives is shaped by our present attachments-to persons, to the projects that imbue our lives with meaning, and to life itself. Through a distinctive "affirmation dynamic", these attachments commit us to affirming the necessary conditions of their objects. The result is that we are sometimes unable to regret events and circumstances that were originally unjustified or otherwise somehow objectionable. Wallace traces these themes through a range of examples. A teenage girl makes an ill-advised decision to conceive a child - but her love for the child once it has been born makes it impossible for her to regret that earlier decision. The painter Paul Gauguin abandons his family to pursue his true artistic calling (and eventual life project) in Tahiti--which means he cannot truly regret his abdication of familial responsibility. The View from Here offers new interpretations of these classic cases, challenging their treatment by Bernard Williams and others. Another example is the "bourgeois predicament": we are committed to affirming the regrettable social inequalities that make possible the expensive activities that give our lives meaning. Generalizing from such situations, Wallace defends the view that our attachments inevitably commit us to affirming historical conditions that we cannot regard as worthy of being affirmed--a modest form of nihilism.
Book Synopsis Practicing Affirmation (Foreword by John Piper) by : Sam Crabtree
Download or read book Practicing Affirmation (Foreword by John Piper) written by Sam Crabtree and published by Crossway. This book was released on 2011-01-19 with total page 178 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: It happens in marriages, parent-child relationships, friendships, workplaces, and churches: Communication falters, friendships wane, teenagers withdraw, marriages fail, and bitter rifts sever once-strong ties. Christian communities are no exception. Why do so many of our relationships suffer from alienation, indifference, and even hostility? Author Sam Crabtree believes that often at the heart of these breakdowns is a lack of affirmation. He observes in Scripture that God grants mercy to those who refresh others, and in life that people tend to be influenced by those who praise them. Crabtree shows how a robust "God-centered affirmation ratio" refreshes others and honors God. Practicing Affirmation sounds a call to recognize and affirm the character of Christ in others. When done well, affirmation does not fuel pride in the person , but refreshes them and honors God . All who are discouraged in relationships will find wisdom and practical insight in this book.

Book Synopsis The Affirmation Principle by : Bernard M. Curtis
Download or read book The Affirmation Principle written by Bernard M. Curtis and published by Xlibris Corporation. This book was released on 2012-11-19 with total page 312 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Take a look in any bookstore, whether on line or brick-and-mortar, and you will fi nd dozens, even hundreds of books on leadership. But the focus of most of these books will be on the mechanics of leading. But leadership is more than the act of leading. Leadership is about the quality of relationships and infl uence. In The Affi rmation Principle, Dr. Bernard Curtis advances the proposition that organizations can bring out the best in people and achieve extraordinary success by understanding how to lead and care for the human spirit. Dr. Curtis begins by presenting the business case for the importance of organizations to understand the benefi ts of valuing people. In part one he explores the unstated contract between employees and employers, describes what organizations must do to connect with their people, and challenges leaders to have the courage to change. In part two, he shares a new concept and model of leadership based on human-affi rming behaviors and sound humane principles. In part three, Dr. Curtis shows how leaders value to the organization can be measured, how they can become more accountable, and what they can do to bring out the best in their people. The Affi rmation Principle offers some keen insights into the leader-follower relationship. This book provides some new tools to help the serious leader take their leadership thinking and skills to the next level.
Book Synopsis Nietzsche on Morality and the Affirmation of Life by : Daniel Came
Download or read book Nietzsche on Morality and the Affirmation of Life written by Daniel Came and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2022-06-09 with total page 231 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: At the core of Nietzsche's famous critique of 'morality' lies the sweeping claim that morality is the primary source of a stance of 'life-denial,' and hence an obstacle to the possibility of an affirmative stance toward life. Moral values, Nietzsche argues, are inimical to the affirmation of life, since they typically denigrate certain ineliminable features of the world and human existence (suffering, loss, impermanence, the body, instinctual desire). Other values, allegedly, are life-affirming because they cultivate or augment a life-affirming tendency. Nietzsche's pervasive concern with undermining morality and fostering an affirmative attitude towards life are thus closely intertwined: he attacks morality because it underwrites a condemnation of life and seeks to supplant morality with an alternative, life-enhancing ethics of affirmation. This volume brings together a number of new essays by leading Nietzsche scholars to examine these centrally important and overlapping themes in Nietzsche's philosophical enterprise.

Book Synopsis The Affirmation of Life by : Bernard Reginster
Download or read book The Affirmation of Life written by Bernard Reginster and published by Harvard University Press. This book was released on 2009-02-28 with total page 348 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Among all the great thinkers of the past two hundred years, Nietzsche continues to occupy a special place--not only for a broad range of academics but also for members of a wider public, who find some of their most pressing existential concerns addressed in his works. Central among these concerns is the question of the meaning of a life characterized by inescapable suffering, at a time when the traditional responses inspired by Christianity are increasingly losing their credibility. While most recent studies of Nietzsche's works have lost sight of this fundamental issue, Bernard Reginster's book The Affirmation of Life brings it sharply into focus. Reginster identifies overcoming nihilism as a central objective of Nietzsche's philosophical project, and shows how this concern systematically animates all of his main ideas. In particular, Reginster's work develops an original and elegant interpretation of the will to power, which convincingly explains how Nietzsche uses this doctrine to mount a critique of the dominant Christian values, to overcome the nihilistic despair they produce, and to determine the conditions of a new affirmation of life. Thus, Reginster attributes to Nietzsche a compelling substantive ethical outlook based on the notions of challenge and creativity--an outlook that involves a radical reevaluation of the role and significance of suffering in human existence. Replete with deeply original insights on many familiar--and frequently misunderstood--Nietzschean concepts, Reginster's book will be essential to anyone approaching this towering figure of Western intellectual history.
Book Synopsis A Clinician's Guide to Gender-Affirming Care by : Sand C. Chang
Download or read book A Clinician's Guide to Gender-Affirming Care written by Sand C. Chang and published by New Harbinger Publications. This book was released on 2018-12-01 with total page 186 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Transgender and gender nonconforming (TNGC) clients have complex mental health concerns, and are more likely than ever to seek out treatment. This comprehensive resource outlines the latest research and recommendations to provide you with the requisite knowledge, skills, and awareness to treat TNGC clients with competent and affirming care. As you know, TNGC clients have different needs based on who they are in relation to the world. Written by three psychologists who specialize in working with the TGNC population, this important book draws on the perspective that there is no one-size-fits-all approach for working with TNGC clients. It offers interventions tailored to developmental stages and situational factors—for example, cultural intersections such as race, class, and religion. This book provides up-to-date information on language, etiquette, and appropriate communication and conduct in treating TGNC clients, and discusses the history, cultural context, and ethical and legal issues that can arise in working with gender-diverse individuals in a clinical setting. You’ll also find information about informed consent approaches that call for a shift in the role of the mental health provider in the position of assessment and referral for the purposes of gender-affirming medical care (such as hormones, surgery, and other procedures). As changes in recent transgender health care and insurance coverage have provided increased access for a broader range of consumers, it is essential to understand transgender and gender nonconforming clients’ different needs. This book provides practical exercises and skills you can use to help TNGC clients thrive.
