Book excerpt: Fiction. Poetry. California Interest. It's California in 1983. A woman pulls an IV out of her arm, walks out of the hospital and starts driving north. She is bleeding and nauseous. There is something in the trunk of her Datsun and it's rotting. FUGITIVE ASSEMBLAGE is lyric noir pieced together from remnant words and the blind turns of Highway 1. This haunted and haunting novel renders sensation through images and evokes grief in a dis/harmony of ghostly voices conjured from geology texts, poetry, family history, personal trauma and from women's diaries of the "westward journey."

This book was released on 2019-07-14 with total page 269 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this ingenious study, Kathryn Rudy takes the reader on a journey to trace the birth, life and afterlife of a Netherlandish book of hours made in 1500. Image, Knife, and Gluepot painstakingly reconstructs the process by which this manuscript was created and discusses its significance as a text at the forefront of fifteenth-century book production, when the invention of mechanically-produced images led to the creation of new multimedia objects. Rudy then travels to the nineteenth century to examine the phenomenon of manuscript books being pillaged for their prints and drawings: she has diligently tracked down the dismembered parts of this book of hours for the first time. Image, Knife, and Gluepot also documents Rudy’s twenty-first-century research process, as she hunts through archives while grappling with the logistics and occasionally the limits of academic research. This is a timely volume, focusing on questions of materiality at the forefront of medieval and literary studies. Beautifully illustrated throughout, its use of original material and its striking interdisciplinary approach, combining book and art history, make it a significant academic achievement. Image, Knife, and Gluepot is a valuable text for any scholar in the fields of medieval studies, the history of early books and publishing, cultural history or material culture. Written in Rudy’s inimitable style, it will also be rewarding for any student enrolled in a course on manuscript production, as well as non-specialists interested in the afterlives of manuscripts and prints. The Royal Society of Edinburgh has generously contributed to this Open Access publication. Due to the number and quality of the images in this book, we have provided the option of a more expensive hardback edition, printed on the best quality paper available, in order to present the images as clearly and beautifully as possible. We hope this range of options — the freely available PDF, HTML and XML editions; the economically priced EPUB, MOBI and paperback editions; and the more expensively printed hardback — will satisfy everyone. Furthermore the HTML edition allows readers to magnify the images of the manuscripts displayed in the book.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Tenth Anniversary Expanded Edition Ten years on, Jasbir K. Puar’s pathbreaking Terrorist Assemblages remains one of the most influential queer theory texts and continues to reverberate across multiple political landscapes, activist projects, and scholarly pursuits. Puar argues that configurations of sexuality, race, gender, nation, class, and ethnicity are realigning in relation to contemporary forces of securitization, counterterrorism, and nationalism. She examines how liberal politics incorporate certain queer subjects into the fold of the nation-state, shifting queers from their construction as figures of death to subjects tied to ideas of life and productivity. This tenuous inclusion of some queer subjects depends, however, on the production of populations of Orientalized terrorist bodies. Heteronormative ideologies that the U.S. nation-state has long relied on are now accompanied by what Puar calls homonationalism—a fusing of homosexuality to U.S. pro-war, pro-imperialist agendas. As a concept and tool of biopolitical management, homonationalism is here to stay. Puar’s incisive analyses of feminist and queer responses to the Abu Ghraib photographs, the decriminalization of sodomy in the wake of the Patriot Act, and the profiling of Sikh Americans and South Asian diasporic queers are not instances of a particular historical moment; rather, they are reflective of the dynamics saturating power, sexuality, race, and politics today. This Tenth Anniversary Expanded Edition features a new foreword by Tavia Nyong’o and a postscript by Puar entitled “Homonationalism in Trump Times.” Nyong’o and Puar recontextualize the book in light of the current political moment while reposing its original questions to illuminate how Puar’s interventions are even more vital and necessary than ever.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: What do we mean by 'assemblage' in contemporary theory? The constant and seemingly limitless expansion of the concept's range of applications begs the question, if any and every kind of collection of things is an assemblage, then what advantage is there is in using this term and not some other term, or indeed no term at all? What makes an assemblage an assemblage, and not some other kind of collection of things? This book advances beyond this impasse and offers practical help in thinking about and using assemblage theory for contemporary cultural and social research, in order to: - Answer the question: what is an assemblage? - Explain why assemblage theory is necessary - Provide clear instructions on how to use assemblage theory Ian Buchanan maps the beginnings of a brand new field within the humanities.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The concept of assemblage has emerged in recent decades as a central tool for describing, analysing, and transforming dynamic systems in a variety of disciplines. Coined by Deleuze and Guattari in relation to different fields of knowledge, human practices, and nonhuman arrangements, “assemblage” is variously applied today in the arts, philosophy, and human and social sciences, forming links not only between disciplines but also between critical thought and artistic practice. Machinic Assemblages focuses on the concept’s uses, transpositions, and appropriations in the arts, bringing together the voices of artists and philosophers that have been working on and with this topic for many years with those of emerging scholar-practitioners. The volume embraces exciting new and reconceived artistic practices that discuss and challenge existing assemblages, propose new practices within given assemblages, and seek to invent totally unprecedented assemblages.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "In 1912 Georges Braque and Pablo Picasso created the first papiers colles by gluing pieces of oak-grained faux bois wallpaper onto their drawings. In 1917 Marcel Duchamp selected a urinal, signed it R. Mutt, and presented it as an object of art under the title Fountain. In 1919 Kurt Schwitters began gathering scraps of rubbish and assembled them into a series of works that he titled Merz constructions. These acts represent three of the most significant achievements in twentieth-century art." "The definitive book on its subject, Collage, Assemblage, and the Found Object offers a comprehensive and dynamic history of the mediums that revolutionized our ideas about the nature of art and influenced virtually every major art movement of the twentieth century." "Made up of fragments, of debris, of rejected pieces and common artifacts of popular culture, collage and assemblage are arts of protest, of challenge, of exploration. They emphasize the everyday and commonplace over precious materials and refinement; concept and process over end product; the temporary and ephemeral over the lasting. They propose a dislocation in time and space and, by the nature of their makeup, offer multiple layers of meaning. They also furnish a compelling historical record of their time." "All these currents are explored by Diane Waldman, deputy director and senior curator of the Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum, New York. In clear and cogent prose, generously illustrated with examples and comparative works, she traces collage, the found object - and the related development, assemblage - from their Cubist beginnings to the present." "Waldman moves from the outrageous experiments of the Dadaists in the 1920s to the irreverent debunkings of the 1960s Pop artists to the provocative appropriation art of the 1990s; from the intricate towers and assemblages of the Russian Constructivists early in this century to the surprising piles of materials put together by such midcentury artists as Robert Rauschenberg, Jasper Johns, and John Chamberlain; from the cerebral and Freudian collages and objects of the Surrealists in the 1920s and 1930s to the probing conundrums posed by the conceptualists of the 1980s and 1990s." "A lively book on lively arts, Collage, Assemblage, and the Found Object gives us a comprehensive and dynamic view of what are arguably the most important artistic developments of our time."--BOOK JACKET.Title Summary field provided by Blackwell North America, Inc. Book excerpt: Provides an exciting approach to some of the most contentious issues in discussions around globalization—bioscientific research, neoliberalism, governance—from the perspective of the "anthropological" problems they pose; in other words, in terms of their implications for how individual and collective life is subject to technological, political, and ethical reflection and intervention. Offers a ground-breaking approach to central debates about globalization with chapters written by leading scholars from across the social sciences. Examines a range of phenomena that articulate broad structural transformations: technoscience, circuits of exchange, systems of governance, and regimes of ethics or values. Investigates these phenomena from the perspective of the “anthropological” problems they pose. Covers a broad range of geographical areas: Africa, the Middle East, East and South Asia, North America, South America, and Europe. Grapples with a number of empirical problems of popular and academic interest — from the organ trade, to accountancy, to pharmaceutical research, to neoliberal reform.

Book excerpt: This volume summarises the outcome of the 13th Workshop of the International Association of Phytoplankton Taxonomy and Ecology (IAP) on if, and if so under what conditions phytoplankton assemblages reach equilibrium in natural environments. Quite a number of ecological concepts use terms such as: ecological equilibrium, stability, steady-state, climax, stable state, etc. However, these ecological concepts often have been "translations" of scientific theories developed in physics or chemistry but they almost always lack scientific corroboration, the problem being that often these concepts remain vague and they are not formally defined. Here an attempt to formally recognize what "equilibrium" is in phytoplankton ecology is traced. The book also contains papers by leading scientists on the taxonomy of two selected key groups: cryptomonads and filamentous cyanoprokaryotes. This volume is addressed to all those involved in phytoplankton taxonomy and ecology and in ecology itself.
