Book excerpt: This book identifies the responsibilities of management in the regulatory territories of the FAA (USA), the EASA (European Union) and the GCAA (UAE), identifying the daily challenges of leadership in ensuring their company is meeting the regulatory obligations of compliance, safety and security that will satisfy the regulator while also meeting the fiducial responsibilities of running an economically viable and efficient lean company that will satisfy the shareholders. Detailing each responsibility of the Accountable Manager, the author breaks them down to understandable and achievable elements where methods, systems and techniques can be applied to ensure the role holder is knowledgeable of accountabilities and is confident that they are not only compliant with the civil aviation regulations but also running an efficient and effective operation. This includes the defining of an Accountable Manager "tool kit" as well as possible software "dashboards" that focus the Accountable Manager on the important analytics, such as the information and data available, as well as making the maximum use of their expert post holder team. This book will be of interest to leadership of all aviation- related companies, such as airlines, charter operators, private and executive operators, flying schools, aircraft and component maintenance facilities, aircraft manufacturers, engine manufacturers, component manufacturers, regulators, legal companies, leasing companies, banks and finance houses, departments of transport, etc; any relevant organisation regulated and licensed by civil aviation authority. It can also be used by students within a wide range of aviation courses at colleges, universities and training academies.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In Making Space: Strategic Leadership for a Complex World, Dr. Wanda M. Austin, president and CEO of The Aerospace Corporation, shares leadership lessons that she has learned during her decades-long career as an engineer and executive in the space industry. "Leadership is not a birthright; it is a skill. Leaders can come from anywhere and in any form," says Austin, noting "there was a societal assumption that an African American woman from the inner city in the 1960s could not be a leader." In this book, Austin shows how she proved that assumption wrong, relying on the encouragement and mentorship of others, while developing the work ethic, values, and skills that took her to the top position in The Aerospace Corporation, a leading architect of the nation's national security space programs. Austin, who became president and CEO of The Aerospace Corporation on January 1, 2008, is internationally recognized for her work in satellite and payload system acquisition, systems engineering, and system simulation. She serves on the President's Council of Advisors on Science and Technology, was appointed to the Defense Science Board in 2010, and was appointed to the NASA Advisory Council in 2014. Among the topics covered in her book are: * Leading through Unexpected, Uncertain, and Intentional Change * Stacking the Deck: The Tactics of Strategic Leadership, and * Building Your Team The Aerospace Corporation is a California nonprofit corporation that operates a federally funded research and development center and has approximately 3,600 employees. It provides guidance and advice to military, civil, and commercial customers to ensure the success of complex, technology-based programs. The Aerospace Corporation, which has annual revenues of more than $900 million, is headquartered in El Segundo, California, with multiple locations across the United States.

Book excerpt: How does a company go from being two days away from filing bankruptcy papers to unparalleled performance in the Aerospace business? The answer can be found in this fascinating story of Aerostructures, a Chula Vista, California-based designer, manufacturer and supplier of major components and assemblies to all the major commercial aircraft manufacturers and to the world's airlines. In 1993 Rohr Industries, as it was known then, was in trouble. Business financials, income and cash flow in particular, were rendering the business unsustainable. The way the business was being run was archaic, organizational structure was cumbersome, and morale was low. Customers were very concerned, and several were preparing to exit.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Leadership and organisational structures which are not adjusted to the cultural background of the employees concerned are most likely to produce sub-optimal results (House, 2004). Therefore it is necessary to develop appropriate leadership and organisational structures in order to fully grasp the cultural environment to be encountered in the professional world. This book presents a research project that was carried out to develop leadership and organisational structures in accordance with the requirements created by different professional backgrounds within the aviation industry. The identification of the different professional cultures was undertaken using a standardised questionnaire. The development of the questionnaire was carried out with the help of the GLOBE study (House, et al., 2004), one of the most extensive research efforts ever undertaken in the field of organisational and national cultures. The main characteristic of the GLOBE study is the development of nine dimensions which serve to identify and characterise any culture. These dimensions are referred to as 'core cultural dimensions'. Using this newly developed questionnaire, it was not only possible to isolate 12 different professional cultures, but also to identify their distinguishing traits which served as the base for the subsequent development of leadership and organisational structures. The survey was complemented by open interviews served to broaden and deepen the results gained with the standardised questionnaire. The research outcomes open the door to a new and important element of cultural research, complementary to those of organisational and national cultures. Although the study was carried out in the aviation industry, the results gained also appear to be transferable to other industries due to the large variety of professions isolated within the course of the presented study and the specific nature of the aviation industry itself.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Since its publication, Complex Adaptive Leadership has become a Gower bestseller that has been taught in corporate leadership programmes, business schools and universities around the world to high acclaim. In this updated paperback edition, Nick Obolensky argues that leadership should not be something only exercised by nominated leaders. It is a complex dynamic process involving all those engaged in a particular enterprise. The theoretical background to this lies in complexity science and chaos theory - spoken and written about in the context of leadership for the last 20 years, but still little understood. We all seem intuitively to know leadership 'isn't what it used to be' but we still cling to old assumptions which look anachronistic in changing and challenging times. Nick Obolensky has practised, researched and taught leadership in the public, private and voluntary sectors. In this exciting book he brings together his knowledge of theory, his own experience, and the results of 19 years of research involving 2,500 executives in 40 countries around the world. The main conclusion from that research is that the more complex things become, the less traditional directive leadership is needed. Those operating in the real world, nonetheless, need ways of coping. The book is focused on helping practitioners struggling to interpret and react to increasingly VUCA (Volatile, Uncertain, Complex, Ambiguous) times. The book will particularly appeal to practitioners wishing to improve their leadership effectiveness as well as for students and researchers in the field of leadership.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Over the next twenty years, the role and contributions of successfully managed projects will continue to grow in importance to aerospace organizations, especially considering the demands of emerging markets. The accompanying challenges will be how to effectively reduce product and process cost where known (incremental) and unknown (transformational) technological innovation is required. Managing Aerospace Projects brings together ten seminal SAE technical papers that support the vision of a more holistic and integrated approach to highly complex projects. Using the concept of project management levers, Dr. Jimmy Williams, Jr., the editor of this title, expands on the critical importance of correctly deciding on •Organizational strategies •Technology and product strategy •Global portfolio strategy •Project portfolio strategy Sub-optimized strategies result in and contribute to a portfolio of misdirected projects and organizational dissatisfaction with project management outcomes unrelated to the actual project management process. As an example, ensuring the convergence and readiness of technologies that are critical for the design, development, and assembly of aircraft requires a disciplined and flexible approach for product and technology development. Operating in an environment in which customer needs and supplier capabilities are dynamic requires continual focus on a portfolio of projects, initiatives, and capabilities that result in sustaining competitive advantage and influence. Managing Aerospace Projects stresses the positive impact of project classification and the specific handling and leadership knowledge requirements so that these endeavors are indeed successful. Some comparisons and lessons from the automotive industry are offered. The notion that project management competence and capabilities are embedded in distinct ways of coordinating and combining multiple competencies suggests that failing to recognize the required organizational adaptations could be a major contributor to sub-optimized project management outcomes.
