Book excerpt: This text provides an introduction to structural dynamics and aeroelasticity, with an emphasis on conventional aircraft. The primary areas considered are structural dynamics, static aeroelasticity, and dynamic aeroelasticity. The structural dynamics material emphasizes vibration, the modal representation, and dynamic response. Aeroelastic phenomena discussed include divergence, aileron reversal, airload redistribution, unsteady aerodynamics, flutter, and elastic tailoring. More than one hundred illustrations and tables help clarify the text, and more than fifty problems enhance student learning. This text meets the need for an up-to-date treatment of structural dynamics and aeroelasticity for advanced undergraduate or beginning graduate aerospace engineering students. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Introductory Guide on the Design of Aerospace Structures Developed from a course taught at Concordia University for more than 20 years, Principles of Aeroelasticity utilizes the author’s extensive teaching experience to immerse undergraduate and first-year graduate students into this very specialized subject. Ideal for coursework or self-study, this detailed examination introduces the concepts of aeroelasticity, describes how aircraft lift structures behave when subjected to aerodynamic loads, and finds its application in aerospace, civil, and mechanical engineering. The book begins with a discussion on static behavior, and moves on to static instability and divergence, dynamic behavior leading up to flutter, and fluid structure interaction problems. It covers classical approaches based on low-order aerodynamic models and provides a rationale for adopting certain aeroelastic models. The author describes the formulation of discrete models as well as continuous structural models. He also provides approximate methods for solving divergence, flutter, response and stability of structures, and addresses non-aeroelastic problems in other areas that are similar to aeroelastic problems. Topics covered include: The fundamentals of vibration theory Vibration of single degree of freedom and two degrees of freedom systems Elasticity in the form of an idealized spring element Repetitive motion Flutter phenomenon Classical methods, Rayleigh-Ritz techniques, Galerkin’s technique, influential coefficient methods, and finite element methods Unsteady aerodynamics, and more

Book excerpt: This paper is concerned with a discussion of some of the problems of flutter and aeroelasticity that are or may be important at high speeds. Various theoretical procedures for treating high Mach number flutter are reviewed. Application of two of these methods, namely, the Van Dyke method and piston-theory method, is made to a specific example and compared with linear two- and three-dimensional results. It is shown that the effects of thickness and airfoil shape are destabilizing as compared with linear theory at high Mach number. In order to demonstrate the validity of these large predicted effects, experimental flutter results are shown for two rectangular wings at Mach numbers of 6.86 and 3. The results of nonlinear piston-theory calculations were in good agreement with experiment, whereas the results of using two- and three-dimensional linear theory were not. In addition, some results demonstrating the importance of including camber modes in a flutter analysis are shown, as well as a discussion of one case of flutter due to aerodynamic heating.

Book excerpt: A set of closed-form approximations is derived which relates the flutter conditions of a wing to its generalized aerodynamic forces. A simplified two-mode analysis is used to obtain a firstorder approximation. More general analyses are performed by treating additional effects as perturbations. The derivations are applicable to a wide class of low-aspect-ratio wings and apply to subsonic, transonic, supersonic, and hypersonic flow.

This book was released on 1970 with total page 44 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Low-speed flutter studies of a dynamically and elastically scaled model of a large multijet transport airplane have been conducted primarily to determine the nacelle aerodynamic effects for high-bypass-ratio fan-jet engines. Data were obtained on a vertical rod mount in two wind tunnels and on a two-cable mount in one of the tunnels. The flutter response of the model was found to be dependent on nacelle aerodynamics, engine-pylon stiffness, mount-system-wind-tunnel configuration, and mass ratio.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is the sixth edition. It is suitable for one or more courses at the advanced undergraduate level and graduate level to cover the field of aeroelasticity. It is also of value to the research scholar and engineering practitioner who wish to understand the state of the art in the field. This book covers the basics of aeroelasticity or the dynamics of fluid–structure interaction. While the field began in response to the rapid development of aviation, it has now expanded into many branches of engineering and scientific disciplines and treats physical phenomena from aerospace engineering, bioengineering, civil engineering, and mechanical engineering in addition to drawing the attention of mathematicians and physicists. The basic questions addressed are dynamic stability and response of fluid structural systems as revealed by both linear and nonlinear mathematical models and correlation with experiment. The use of scaled models and full-scale experiments and tests play a key role where theory is not considered sufficiently reliable.
