Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Helicopters are highly capable and useful rotating-wing aircraft with roles that encompass a variety of civilian and military applications. Their usefulness lies in their unique ability to take off and land vertically, to hover stationary relative to the ground, and to fly forward, backward, or sideways. These unique flying qualities, however, come at a high cost including complex aerodynamic problems, significant vibrations, high levels of noise, and relatively large power requirements compared to fixed-wing aircraft. This book, written by an internationally recognized expert, provides a thorough, modern treatment of the aerodynamic principles of helicopters and other rotating-wing vertical lift aircraft. Every chapter is extensively illustrated and concludes with a bibliography and homework problems. Advanced undergraduate and graduate students, practising engineers, and researchers will welcome this thorough and up-to-date text on rotating-wing aerodynamics.

Book excerpt: In "Aerodynamic Principles of Flight Vehicles" Argyris Panaras examines the fundamentals of vortices and shock waves, aerodynamic estimation of lift and drag, airfoil theory, boundary layer control, and high-speed, high-temperature flow. Individual chapters address vortices in aerodynamics, transonic and supersonic flows, transonic/supersonic aircraft configurations, and high-supersonic/hypersonic flows, beginning with definitions and historical data, and then describing present-day status and current research challenges. Emphasis is given to flow control, to the evolution of flight vehicle shapes as flight speed has increased, and to discoveries that enabled breakthrough developments in flight. The book: examines why various equations and technologies were developed, explains major contributors in areas such as vortices and aircraft wakes, drag buildup, sonic boom, and shock wave-boundary layer interactions, among others, and helps readers apply concepts from the material to their own projects. Archival and encyclopedic, "Aerodynamic Principles of Flight Vehicles" is a superb reference for aeronautical students and professionals alike. Although most beneficial to readers with a working knowledge of aerodynamics, it is accessible to anyone with an introductory understanding of the field.

This book was released on 1956 with total page 42 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Summary: The problem of designing an aircraft which will develop high lift-drag ratios in flight at high supersonic speeds is attacked using the elementary principle that the components of the aircraft should be individually and collectively arranged to impart the maximum downward and the minimum forward momentum to the surrounding air. This principle in conjunction with other practical considerations of hypersonic flight leads to the study of configurations for which the body is situated entirely below the wing; that is, flat-top wing-body combinations. Theory indicates that sensibly complete aircraft of this type can be designed to develop lift-drag ratios well in excess of 6.

Book excerpt: Prepared at the request of NASA, Aeronautical Technologies for the Twenty-First Century presents steps to help prevent the erosion of U.S. dominance in the global aeronautics market. The book recommends the immediate expansion of research on advanced aircraft that travel at subsonic speeds and research on designs that will meet expected future demands for supersonic and short-haul aircraft, including helicopters, commuter aircraft, "tiltrotor," and other advanced vehicle designs. These recommendations are intended to address the needs of improved aircraft performance, greater capacity to handle passengers and cargo, lower cost and increased convenience of air travel, greater aircraft and air traffic management system safety, and reduced environmental impacts.

The framework is a multidisciplinary engineering analysis, fully supported by flight simulation, with software validation at several levels. The book covers topics such as geometrical configurations, configuration aerodynamics and determination of aerodynamic derivatives, weight engineering, propulsion systems (gas turbine engines and propellers), aircraft trim, flight envelopes, mission analysis, trajectory optimisation, aircraft noise, noise trajectories and analysis of environmental performance. A unique feature of this book is the discussion and analysis of the environmental performance of the aircraft, focusing on topics such as aircraft noise and carbon dioxide emissions.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The origin of Aerodynamic Design of Transport Aircraft stems from the time when the author was appointed part-time professor in the Aerospace Faculty of Delft University of Technology. At the time his main activities were those of leading the departments of Aerodynamics, Performance and Preliminary Design at Fokker Aircraft Company. The groundwork for this book started in 1987 as a series of lecture notes consisting mainly of pictorial material with a minimum of English explanatory text. After the demise of Fokker in 1996 one feared that interest in aeronautical engineering would strongly diminish. As a result of this, the course was discontinued and the relationship between the author and the faculty came to an end. Two years later the situation was reappraised, and the interest in aeronautical engineering remained, so the course was reinstated with a former Fokker colleague Ronald Slingerland as lecturer. The lecture notes from these courses form the foundation of this publication.
