Book excerpt: A wind-tunnel investigation has been conducted to determine the effect of ground proximity on the aerodynamic characteristics of thick highly cambered rectangular wings with aspect ratios of 1, 2, 4, and 6. The results showed that, for these aspect ratios, as the ground was approached all wings experienced increases in lift-curve slope and reductions in induced drag which resulted in increases in lift-drag ratio. Although an increase in lift-curve slope was obtained for all aspect ratios as the ground was approached, the lift coefficient at an angle of attack of 0 degrees for any given aspect ratio remained nearly constant. The experimental results were in general agreement with Wieselsberger's ground-effect theory. As the wings approached the ground, there was an increase in static longitudinal stability at positive angles of attack. When operating in ground effect, all the wings had stability of height at positive angles of attack and instability of height at negative angles of attack. Wing-tip fairings on the wings with aspect ratios of 1 and 2 produced small increases in lift-drag ratio in ground effect. (Author).

This book was released on 1951 with total page 56 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A series of untapered, unswept, complete wings of apsect ratios 1.13, 2.13, 4.13, and 6.13 was investigated at a Mach number of 0.26 to determine the effect of aspect ratio on the lateral control characteristics of the wings equipped with 0.25-chord sealed ailerons of various spans and of various spanwise locations. Design charts are presented for computing aileron effectiveness of low-aspect-ratio, untapered, unswept wings. Experimental values of control effectivenesss are compared with values estimated by theoretical methods.

This book was released on 1964 with total page 123 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The effects of end-plate and camber changes on the aerodynamic characteristics of five basic wings in ground effect were investigated by the image technique, and the effect of gap-chord and aspect ratio was investigated on tandem-wing combinations over a ground board. For a given end-plate structural clearance height, the addition of end plates shows an increase in L/D for AR-1; however, better L/D is obtained with end plates off for AR-4. For a given wing trailing edge structural clearance height, end plates show considerable improvement in L/D. Improved L/D is also noted for (a) small down flap deflection, (b) contoured end plates, (c) wedge-bottom end plates, (d) thin wing, and (e) high aspect ratio. Static stability improves as the ground is approached and is particularly evident for the tandem-wing combinations. Limited data were obtained in roll and yaw. (Author).
