Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Adventures Social and Literary The following pages of Adventures should be looked upon and read as though one had chanced to meet the Author at a country-house party, and after a British breakfast, damask tablecloth, silver, silver everywhere, and roses and rolls and simmering dishes, and honey taken episodically by each guest as he and she strolls into the dining-room during the course of the morning, two or three or four of the number of either sex happen to stroll out upon the soft emerald lawn and stand under the big cedar that shades them from the sun, already high risen in the sky. The Author tells some of his experiences for twenty minutes or so, after which the impromptu party separates, to meet perhaps, equally by accident, after luncheon, in one of the broad bay-windows looking over the lake and distant woodlands: one solitary church spire gives a note of idealism to the landscape. More stories then, and perhaps a boating excursion on the lake, where some may get a little wet, but they will not catch a severe cold. The Author's chief regret is that he is obliged to monopolize the conversation on this occasion (for listening well to others is half of good conversation). A late famous ambassador, whose son was the author's good friend, was once staying with Dr. Jowett at Balliol. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Adventures and Day Dreams In giving this Book of Adventures and Fiction to the public, it is hoped there may be some who are thirsting for knowledge, such as we are able to write. It is natural to crave the knowledge as the result of personal experiences of others. Of the millions and million of people who inhabit the earth, no two are alike in feature and thought. How interesting if all our lips were unsealed to the world. Society has taught us to curb our emotions. If we could live for one day naturally, and express our thoughts as they come to us, then we would interest the public. Book excerpt: The number and popularity of novels that have overtly reconfigured aspects of classic American texts suggests a curious trend for both readers and writers, an impulse to retell and reread books that have come to define American culture. This book argues that by revising canonical American literature, contemporary American writers are (re)writing an American myth of origins, creating one that corresponds to the contemporary writer’s understanding of self and society. Informed by cognitive psychology, evolutionary literary criticism, and poststructuralism, Entzminger reads texts by canonical authors Poe, Hawthorne, Melville, Alcott, Twain, Chopin, and Faulkner, and by the contemporary writers that respond to them. In highlighting the construction and cognitive function of narrative in their own and in their antecedent texts, contemporary writers highlight the fact that such use of narrative is universal and essential to human beings. This book suggests that by revising the classic texts that compose our cultural narrative, contemporary writers mirror the way human individuals consistently revisit and refigure the past through language, via self-narration, in order to manage and understand experience.

Book excerpt: Excerpt from Jack Hopeton, or the Adventures of a Georgian Sometimes Uncle Charley was at our house, when other guests were present, and at such times he always wore his society face. Again he would visit us when no one was at Hopeton besides my parents and myself. Then he was entirely different. A per feet abandon, in which he seemed actually to revel, characterized all his actions. He was a great favorite with such of our negroes as were anything like characters, and many were the jests which they had with each other. Book excerpt: Adventure and outdoor sports - from rock climbing to freestyle kayaking – are a modern social phenomenon that can tell us much about the relationship between sport, culture and contemporary society. In this engaging new introductory text, adventure sports are used to illustrate key concepts in social theory and to demonstrate why an understanding of social theory is essential for any student taking a course in sport, adventure, or outdoor education. Each chapter in the book introduces a key ‘classical’ or modern social theorist, including Marx, Durkheim, Weber and Elias, or a universal topic or issue in social theory, such as sustainability, commodification or identity. Within each of those chapters the theorist or topic is brought to life through case studies of adventurous activities and lived experiences, helping the reader to connect their own sporting and adventurous interests with the frameworks we use to understand wider culture and society. Concise and full of cutting-edge contemporary examples, Outdoor Adventure and Social Theory is the perfect companion for any module on the sociology of sport, adventure or outdoor recreation.

This book was released on 1996-06-24 with total page 264 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Since the time of its publication in 1884, Adventures of Huckleberry Finn has generated heated controversy. One of the most frequently banned books in the history of literature, it raises issues of race relations, censorship, civil disobedience, and adolescent group psychology as relevant today as they were in the 1880s. This collection of historical documents, collateral readings, and commentary captures the stormy character of the slave-holding frontier on the eve of war and highlights the legacy of past conflicts in contemporary society. Among the source materials presented are: memoirs of fugitive slaves, a river gambler, a gunman, and Mississippi Valley settlers; the Southern Code of Honor; rules of dueling; and an interview with a 1990s gang member. These materials will promote interdisciplinary study of the novel and enrich the student's understanding of the issues raised. The work begins with a literary analysis of the novel's structure, language, and major themes and examines its censorship history, including recent cases linked to questions of race and language. A chapter on censorship and race offers a variety of opposing contemporary views on these issues as depicted in the novel. The memoirs in the chapter Mark Twain's Mississippi Valley illuminate the novel's pastoral view of nature in conflict with a violent civilization resting on the institution of slavery and shaped by the genteel code of honor. Slavery, Its Legacy, and Huck Finn features 19th-century pro-slavery arguments, firsthand accounts of slavery, the text of the Missouri Compromise of 1820 and the Fugitive Slave Law of 1850, and opposing views on civil disobedience from such 19th- and 20th-century Americans as Ralph Waldo Emerson, Stephen A. Douglas, and William Sloane Coffin. Nineteenth-century commentators on the Southern Code of Honor and Twain's sentimental cultural satire directly relate the novel to the social and cultural milieu in which it was written. Each chapter closes with study questions, student project ideas, and sources for further reading on the topic. This is an ideal companion for teacher use and student research in English and American history courses.
