Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This picaresque novel owes much to Cervantes, Fielding, and Bellow, with a certain nod to Dostoevsky and Franzen. We meet the main character as a young successful adult and follow him into friendships and situations that are amusing, crushing, and even criminal. We follow his hilarious and fateful paths through multiple French trips, including a pig hunt in Perigord. Paris, Nice, Monaco, and Val d'Isere are richly explored. In Mexican trips, he is trapped in Mayan sexual rites, climbs Orizaba, and almost dies at sea in a Pacific storm. His formative life is recounted, including events which warp forever his relationship with women. His psychic state permits sex with Greek goddesses and to receive stunning predictions from Apollo. Finally, he is led to Hades by the goddess Juno, a lover, and tried by King Minos for the crimes of rape and murder. Persephone prosecutes and Pluto defends. A jury of prominent dead is selected. One witness, Hitler's ghost, describes the event that triggered his order to exterminate the Jews, offered in evidence by Pluto as a counterpoint in magnitude to Rory’s crimes. Rory denies guilt as the trial ends. Memory and imagination grow from the soil of the author’s brain and by definition are autochthonic. Could you say that the fiction that fiction is fiction is not fiction?

Book excerpt: This is the first book exploring the unique dynamics created by a multidisciplinary trauma team and how crisis management strategies can improve teamwork and communication and, potentially, improve patient resuscitation outcomes. Crisis resource management (CRM) is integral to the way that we manage ourselves, team members, and patients during emergency situations. It is essentially the ability to translate knowledge of what needs to be done into effective actions during a crisis situation. Building on the revolutionary American College of Surgeons Advanced Trauma Life Support (ATLS®) course, Trauma Team Dynamics illustrates the integration of the principles of CRM to team dynamics throughout the resuscitation –from the scene, through pre-hospital care and transport, to the trauma bay, and finally to definitive care and beyond. The editors and contributors are international experts in trauma, critical care, emergency medicine, nursing, respiratory therapy, and pre-hospital care and include NASA- and United States military-affiliated experts. Trauma Team Dynamics is intended for use as both a day-to-day clinical resource and a reference text, and includes self-assessment questions as well as guidance on CRM curriculum design and implementation.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Here Grof presents a useful model of the psyche—a model extended by his thirty years of studying non-ordinary states of consciousness. It is useful for understanding such phenomena as shamanism, mysticism, psychedelic states, spontaneous visionary experiences, and psychotic episodes. The model is also useful in explaining the dynamics of experiential psychotherapies and a variety of sociopolitical manifestations such as war and revolution. This book might have been entitled Beyond Drugs. The second part describes the principles and process of the non-pharmacological technique developed by the author and his wife, Christina, for self-exploration and for psychotherapy. Grof explores in detail the components of this technique. He describes its method, its effective mechanisms, as well as its goals and potential. Its practice is simple, since it utilizes the natural healing capacity of the psyche.

On occasion, life-altering events can be prevented from ever occurring, or measures may be taken by both patients and medical providers to reduce the impact these events have. This book was written for two reasons, to enlighten those curious about the flight-nurse profession and to share some take home lessons from these medical emergencies with the public, nurses, and EMS providers. The author is an acute care nurse practitioner for the Cleveland Metro Life Flight Team. After being asked frequently about his career as a life-flight nurse, David Kaniecki decided to answer this question by sharing his more memorable experiences as a life-flight nurse, linking each story to a teachable event. In his book, he describes many of his exciting adventures of critical care transport with various emergent disease processes. For those unfamiliar to critical care, he helps explain these diseases in an easy to understand format prior to sharing his story. David believes the greatest teaching methods are through real life experiences. After each story, he shares key lessons that can be taken away from these events.
