Book excerpt: Stem rot disease caused by Athelia rolfsii is a significant soil-borne disease that affects peanut crops in tropical, subtropical, and certain temperate regions. Due to the limited epidemiological information on factors affecting disease development, growers typically rely on calendar-based fungicide applications, as environmentally based management recommendations are not yet reliable. This dissertation discusses the challenges associated with managing stem rot disease and proposes environmentally based predictive models for inoculum (sclerotia) germination and stem rot epidemics, leveraging the relationship between environmental factors and critical stages of the disease cycle. In vitro and field experiments were conducted to develop models to predict sclerotial germination timing, using canopy relative humidity, soil temperature and matric potential, and the temporal variability of stem rot disease across six distinct environments in North Florida. This research aims to facilitate the development of effective strategies to mitigate stem rot disease of peanut and other soil borne plant diseases.
