Book excerpt: Very-high-energy astrophysics studies the most energetic photons in the sky allowing the exploration of the violent and extreme non-thermal phenomena in the Universe. Significant advances in knowledge have been made in this field using ground-based imaging atmospheric Cherenkov telescopes (IACTs) as detectors to study the very-high-energy physical processes in the Universe. This book reviews the progress in the field since the advent of the second generation IACTs in around 2004.Going through the scientific highlights obtained by the three current instruments of this kind, H.E.S.S., VERITAS and MAGIC, operating now for more than ten years, this book presents a state-of-the-art knowledge in four areas of modern astrophysics and cosmology, namely the origin of the cosmic rays, the physic of compact objects and their resulting relativistic outflows, gamma-ray cosmology and the search for dark matter. Along with a detailed review of the outstanding scientific outcome, a summary of the key technological developments that yielded to the recognized success of the technique is also provided. This book is written for young academics in the fields of astrophysics, high energy physics and cosmology. At the same time, it can serve as a source of reference for the expert in the field.

Book excerpt: This book explores the most pertinent aspects and advancements in sonochemistry, dedicating nine chapters to fundamentals, synthesis methods, and applications. Covering ultrasound as the primary energy source, the initial chapters cover the interaction of ultrasound waves with matter and its diverse applications across various fields. The text further delves into the synthesis of nanomaterials and nanocomposites under varying reaction conditions. Finally, the book examines specific topics, including the application of sonochemistry in wastewater treatment, catalysts, sensors, meat processing, and food packaging. These insights indicate that sonochemistry is an emerging science with promising applications extending beyond the confines of the laboratory.

Book excerpt: This is the sixth edition in a series of Workshops on High Energy Gamma-Ray Experiments, following the ones held in Perugia (2002), Bari (2004), Cividale del Friuli (2005), Elba Island (2006) and Villa Mondragone (2007). The year the focus is on the region known by the acronym VHE (Very High Energy), bridging the gap between GeV and TeV. The physics that lies in this region is of the utmost importance to improve our knowledge of many different astrophysical sources like pulsars, AGNs, GRBs, and our understanding of the main components of the Extragalactic Background Light (EBL). An update is given on the current and planned research for spaceborne and ground-based experiments dedicated to the observation of the gamma-ray sky.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: High energy gamma-ray photons are the prime probes of the relativistic or high-energy universe, populated by black holes, neutron stars, supernovae, quasars, and matter-antimatter annihilations. Through studying the gamma-ray sky, astrophysicists are able to better understand the formation and behavior of these exotic and energetic bodies. Very High Energy Gamma-Ray Astronomy summarizes the status of gamma-ray astronomy at energies between 30MeV and 50TeV at a critical point in the development of the discipline: the hiatus between the demise of the EGRET telescope and the launch of the next generation of space telescopes. Starting with an overview of the astrophysics of the bodies that generate high energy gamma rays, it proceeds to discuss the latest developments in observational techniques and equipment. By presenting the techniques, observations, and theories of this expanding frontier, Very High Energy Gamma-Ray Astronomy aids experimentalists and theoreticians in detecting and explaining gamma rays of the highest energies.

This book was released on 2001-10-31 with total page 378 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Energetic Gamma-Ray Experiment Telescope (EGRET) instru ment on the Compton Gamma-Ray Observatory left as a legacy its Third Catalog of High Energy Gamma-Ray Sources, whose detections include a large number of blazars, some pulsars, the Large Magellanic Cloud and a solar flare. Most of the newly discovered objects - a majority of the catalog -are unidentified sources, with a clearly predominant Galactic population. Are all these radio-quiet pulsars, like Geminga, or is there a novel type of celestial object, awaiting identification? In spite of the limited angular resolution provided by EGRET and COMPTEL, there is still much to learn about unidentified ,-ray sources: correlation studies, multiwavelength observations and theoretical work can provide valuable clues, specially if these efforts are carried out in a coordinated manner. The aim of this workshop, held from October 9 to 11, 2000, at the Instituto N acional de Astrofisica, Optica y Electronica, at Tonantzintla, Mexico, was to gather experts on the subject, including observational as tronomers specialized in other regions of the electromagnetic spectrum, in an effort to address the question of the Nature of Galactic high-energy gamma-ray sources, both from the theoretical and observational perspec tive, and elaborate schemes for future identification studies which can make use of existing and forthcoming facilities.
