Book excerpt: Latex-based technology forms a sizable fraction of natural and synthetic rubber technology and an introduction to the important technologies is beneficial to all practicing technical personnel. This book offers a condensed practical guidance on the technologies used for the production of important latex products. The book begins with a short history of natural rubber latex, formation in the tree and the tapping, storage and conversion of latex to marketable forms. It discusses preservation and concentration of natural rubber latex and the most widely used latex compounding ingredients. Dipping and casting techniques are discussed, as well as the technology related to foams, threads and adhesives. In addition, the book offers an introduction to important lattices such as styrene-co-butadiene rubber, acrylonitrile-co-butadiene, polychloroprene, polyvinyl chloride, and so on. Fully illustrated throughout, with photographs from actual production sites, this practical guide is ideal for academics, research and development managers, students of polymer technology and all those working in the latex industry.

Book excerpt: The polymer latex technology by emulsion polymerisation offers significant advantages as compared to bulk and solution polymerisation technologies owing to the better control of heat and viscosity of the medium along with the possibility of increasing the molecular weight of the polymer chains without affecting the rate of polymerisation. These emulsion polymerisation methods have undergone significant advances in the recent years and now a days, synthesis of structured latexes with well defined morphologies and properties has been possible. The development of miniemulsion polymerisation has helped to polymerise very hydrophobic and very hydrophilic monomers, which otherwise are difficult to be polymerised with the conventional emulsion polymerisation. The combination of controlled living polymerisation methods like nitroxide mediated polymerisation, atom transfer radical polymerisation as well as reversible addition fragmentation chain transfer with the emulsion and miniemulsion polymerisation methods has resulted into the synthesis of functional block copolymer chains, graft copolymer chains and star or multi arm copolymer chains in the polymer particles. Apart from that, specific surface modifications on the surface of the emulsion particles have been achieved which have expended the area of application of such polymer particles. The kinetics and mechanism of particle generation with the living polymerisation in emulsion and miniemulsion are very complex, however, the recent advances have helped to understand these systems more clearly, thus, allowing to steer them to the advantage. Therefore, these recent advances in the latex technology need to be brought into a cumulative text in order to provide insight into the various possibilities of achieving the optimum latexes.

Book excerpt: Polymer Brushes: Substrates, Technologies, and Properties covers various aspects of polymer brush technology, including synthesis, properties, performance, and applications. It presents both experimental details and theoretical insights to enable a better understanding of the brush system. After an overview of polymer brush systems, the book discusses methods for grafting organic brushes from the surface of clay platelets and for the covalent grafting of PNIPAm brushes. It then describes ferrocene polymer brushes, nonfouling brushes on poly(ethylene terephthalate) film surfaces, brushes formed on the inner surface of cylindrical pores, and the "zipper brush" approach. The authors examine the use of scanning electrochemical microscopy for analyzing brushes and compare surface-controlled atom transfer radical polymerization and surface-controlled single-electron transfer living radical polymerization. They also explore the application of polymer brushes in the chromatographic separations of viruses and proteins and the suppression of proteins and cell adhesions. The text concludes with a look at how polymer brushes are synthesized by surface-initiated iniferter-mediated polymerization. This book provides a one-stop reference on the various substrates and technologies used to synthesize polymer brushes. The hands-on information in the text will help readers choose the proper synthesis methods and materials for their system.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Many rubber products that have a direct impact on our health and quality of life today - gloves, condoms, baby bottle teats, catheters and various other medical devices - are made by dipping elastomers in a latex form. Whilst there are many technical articles covering polymer latices, there are few that look in detail into the actual processes employed by the manufacturers to make these products, the constraints that they face and the problems that they must overcome to compete successfully in the market place. This book looks to help fill that gap by describing, in practical terms, the raw materials used in modern latex dipping, how these materials are prepared for use and the actual processes employed to convert these materials into a finished product. Some of the scientific principles that will be encountered in the production procedures are described in simplified form to help those involved in the manufacturing understand the critical principles involved in latex dipping. In addition, advice is given on the reinforcement of dipped latex products, quality control, problem solving and the validation of the manufacturing processes in an industry that is becoming increasingly regulated. The book will be of value to all those engaged in the manufacture of dipped latex products, the production plant supervisors, those working in quality control, testing laboratories and technical support functions. It is hoped that those involved in the research and development of latex dipping, together with interested workers outside of the direct manufacturing industry, for example in universities and colleges, will also find it a useful insight into modern manufacturing with latex products, and how science and technology are coming together to provide products to make our world a better place in which to live.

The book opens by presenting important background information on polymer chemistry and physicochemical characterization of polymers. This serves as essential scientific support for the subsequent chapters, each of which is devoted to the applications of polymers in a particular medical specialty. The coverage is broad, encompassing orthopedics, ophthalmology, tissue engineering, surgery, dentistry, oncology, drug delivery, nephrology, wound dressing and healing, and cardiology. The development of polymers that enhance the biocompatibility of blood-contacting medical devices and the incorporation of polymers within biosensors are also addressed. This book is an excellent guide to the recent advances in polymeric biomaterials and bridges the gap between the research literature and standard textbooks on the applications of polymers in medicine.
