Similarly, the emerging technologies, techniques, and tools in data collection and analyses continue to advance the fields of plant conservation biology and plant reproductive ecology, allowing for discoveries and interpretations that were not feasible at the beginning of the century. Additionally, climate change and ecosystem loss have only continued to accelerate during the 21st century, resulting in a more pressing need to holistically understand the biology of rare plants. For this Special Issue of Plants, we have included papers that cover a wide variety of perspectives in population genetics, ecology, pollination biology, mutualist and antagonistic interactions, seed ecology, systematics, modeling, etc., toward advancing the fields of reproductive ecology and the conservation of plants. The studies focus on single species or multiple species that include broader implications within the subject matter of the Special Issue. In addition, this Special Issue sought out different research viewpoints and perspectives within and outside academia and captured a global perspective of plant reproductive ecology and conservation biology. Collectively, these studies provide a diverse perspective on the fields at present and help to point a direction forward for conservation biology.

The adaptive significance of variation in traits associated with floral biology, pollination, seed dispersal, and seedling establishment is an integral component of plant reproductive ecology and evolutionary biology. This book explores the diversity of flower symmetry and the evolutionary patterns of internal structures of generative organs in angiosperms. The rapidly emerging global crisis of declining pollinators poses a major threat to food security. As such, the book also covers the diversity of plant-pollinator interactions, the impact of non-native exotic plant communities on native plants and pollinators, and strategies for the restoration of pollinator communities.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Tremendous progress has been made during the past decade in the burgeoning field of plant reproductive biology. A number of quantitative and technical breakthroughs, such as horizontal starch-gel electrophoresis, have resulted in a revolution in our thinking. The study of breeding systems, which used to be marked by a rather static focus on pollination and self-incompatibility, has been transformed by dynamic models of transitional pathways, and investigators are looking not only into genetic factors but ecological ones as well. Workers in the field have recently produced detailed accounts of mating success and the relative fitness of plants as male and female parents, thus testing the applicability of sexual selection theory to plants. Ecology and Evolution of Plant Reproduction surveys recent advances in the field of plant reproductive biology and identifies fruitful avenues for future research. The contributors are well known in the fields of morphology, systematics, genetics, cell biology, and ecology, representing the full spectrum of approaches that contribute vigor to this emerging field. This new work will benefit professionals and graduate students in plant science and plant breeding, evolutionary ecology, genetics, and reproductive biology.

Book excerpt: The field of plant physiology includes the study of all chemical and physical processes of plants, from the molecular-level interactions of photosynthesis and the diffusion of water, minerals, and nutrients within the plant, to the larger-scale processes of plant growth, dormancy and reproduction. This new book covers a broad array of topics within the field. Plant Physiology focuses on the study of the internal activities of plants, including research into the molecular interactions of photosynthesis and the internal diffusion of water, minerals, and nutrients. Also included are investigations into the processes of plant development, seasonality, dormancy, and reproductive control. The chapters focus on various aspects of plant physiology, including phytochemistry; interactions within a plant between cells, issues, and organs; ways in which plants regulate their internal functions; and how plants respond to conditions and variations within the environment. Given the environmental crises brought about by pollution and climate change, this is a particularly vital area of study, since stress from water loss, changes in air chemistry, or crowding by other plants can lead to changes in the way a plant function. Readers of this book will gain the information they need to stay current with the latest research being done in this essential field of study.

Book excerpt: Plant reproductive biology has undergone a revolution during the past five years, with the cloning, sequencing and localization of the genes important in reproduction. These advantages in plant molecular biology have led to exciting applications in plant biotechnology, including the genetic engineering of male sterility and other reproductive processes. This book presents an interesting and contemporary account of these new developments from the scientists in whose laboratories they have been made. The chapters focus on two areas: the molecular biology of self-incompatibility, which is the system of self-recognition controlled by the S-gene and related genes; and the cellular and molecular biology of pollen development and genetic dissection of male sterility. Some chapters feature Arabidopsis, with its unique genetic system. Reproduction is vital for seed production in crop plants, and this book presents new approaches to manipulate plant breeding systems for the 21st century.

EUCARPIA (the European Association for Plant breeding) currently has 1.200 members, including scientists and staff of both publ ic and private organizations. Its aim is to promote scientific and technical research and cooperation In the field of plant breeding, and thereby to contribute to the development of agriculture. Every three years, EUCARPIA organizes a scientific congress. In 1992, the Xilith EUCARPIA Congress will be held In ANGERS (Fran ce) and the theme Is "Reproductive biology and plant breeding". Reproduction of plant material Is central to selection. The geneti cist, the plant breeder and the seed grower all use sexual and ve getative reproduction during the various stages of plant breeding and creation of variety. The possibility of unlimited interspecific reproduction, the use of gametogenesis dysfunction, the creation of auto and allogamy, and the cloning of the best genotypes are the challenges before the plant breeder. To understand how the reproductive system conditions the genetic structure of a population, and to Investigate the relation ships between the reproductive mode and the organization of varia bility Is a central key to genetic progress. The articles presented In this book review the current state of knowledge of reproductive biology, and Its impact on variety crea tion.

This book was released on 1988-07-07 with total page 362 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This collection of reviews by leading investigators examines plant reproduction and sexuality within a framework of evolutionary ecology, providing an up-to-date account of the field. The contributors discuss conceptual issues, showing the importance of sex allocation, sexual selection and inclusive fitness, and the dimensions of paternity and maternity in plants. The evolution, maintenance, and loss of self-incompatibility in plants, the nature of 'sex choice' in plants, and sex dimorphism are all explored in detail. Specific forms of biotic interactions shaping the evolution of plant reproductive strategy are discussed, and a taxonomically based review of the reproductive ecology of non-angiosperm plant groups, such as bryophytes, ferns, and algae, is presented. Together these studies focus on the complexities of plant life cycles and the distinctive reproductive biologies of these organisms, while showing the similarities between nonflowering plants and the more thoroughly documented flowering species.

Book excerpt: In recent years there has been a growing awareness of the importance of reproductive biology to crop production and there has been a tremendous increase in research on reproductive structures of higher plants. Presented here is a wide information of different aspects of micro- and macrosporogenesis, pollen-stigma interaction and recognition, pollen tube growth, cytoskeleton, in vitro and in vivo gamete fusion, and incompatibility. The most advanced techniques employed in studies on reproductive biology of higher plants are described in detail.
