Book excerpt: Insects are the most interesting and diverse group of organisms on earth, many of which are useful as pollinators of crops and wild plants while others are useful as natural enemies keeping pestiferous insects in check. It is important to conserve these insects for our survival and for this the diversity of insect species inhabiting the different ecosystems of our country must be known. The cornerstone to studies of any kind of organismal diversity is their taxonomic identity. Even after over two and half centuries of studies, so little is known of the insect wealth of our country. It has contributions from taxonomists who have been studying Indian insects for long, this book offers up to date information on many important groups of Indian insects seeking to fill the lacuna of a long felt need for a comprehensive work on the taxonomy of Indian insects. Salient features: Provides an up-to-date taxonomy of major insect groups of India Presents identification keys with illustrations of several important groups of Indian insects Gives a new insight into why insects are so abundant Addresses fundamental questions in mechanoreception and cross kingdom interactions using insects as model systems Indian Insects: Diversity and Science is a festschrift to Professor C. A. Viraktamath, an insect taxonomist par excellence. It has been designed to cater to the needs of academicians, researchers and students who wish to identify insects collected from local environments and will be an invaluable aid for those working in the areas of systematics, ecology, behaviour, diversity and the conservation of insects.

This book was released on 2012-12-02 with total page 132 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Gasteruptiidae Ashmead, 1900 (Hymenoptera: Evanioidea) is a worldwide distributed family, including two extant subfamilies Hyptiogastrinae and Gasteruptiinae and one extinct subfamily Kutujellitinae. There are approximately 500 extent species of this family are recorded in the world, with only 16 species in one genus are known from China. An extensive review of previously published literatures and previously unidentified specimens referred to Gasteruptiidae results in taxonomic revision of the family from China. This monograph includes identification of six new species and eight Chinese new record species, establishment of three new synonyms, and designation of three lectotypes. Descriptions and illustrations of the 28 valid Chinese species of the genus Gasteruption are provided and key to all Chinese species are made. The results of this monograph clarify some taxonomic confusion, richen the geographical distributions of Gasteruptiidae in China and provide facilities for further research in Chinese Gasteruptiidae.

Book excerpt: PESTS OF FOREST IMPORTANCE AND THEIR MANAGEMENT is a unique book comprising all the major components of a sylvatic ecosystem from the standpoint of pests of economic importance and their control using both conventional and modern applications. The book is a compilation of 15 specialist articles woven around the central theme of the objective envisaging a variety of forest arthropod pests including both insects and arachnids as well as vertebrates. The book, written in a lucid and clearly comprehensible style, consists of closely knitted articles on taxonomy, biology, economic forestry, ecology, biogeography, prevention and control of the forest products from the pest attack, which all make an interesting reading and will hopefully serve a good purpose of a reference work for both a serious researcher and the amateur naïve enthusiast.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The dominance of insects amongst all living organisms on earth, coupled with infinite wealth of knowledge so important for our own existence, is a fundamental scientific fact which is yet to be widely acknowledged. This dominance means that in numbers of species beyond our comprehension these animals permeate diverse and essential natural processes in Earth's terrestrial, aerial and freshwater ecosystems, contributing to the function of the natural world as a self-sustaining biological system. Invariably insects are an integral and complex part of the terrestrial and freshwater ecosystems with which the future of humans is inextricably linked. Insects have ultimately achieved a formidable diversity. Generally, insects are beneficial organisms, however, many of them are important pests and/or vectors to a large number of parasites and other microbial pathogens to both human being, his associates and the plants. The burden caused by their infestation or infection run up to several million-zillion rupees annually. Therefore, knowledge about extreme biodiversity and ecological relationships of these animals is a practical necessity: in the man's own interest to sustain the species. Packed with original 25 original articles/reviews, this book on 'Entomology: Ecology and Biodiversity' offers an invaluable opportunity to comprehend more deeply about our most intimate allies - the insects! The book truly establishes a foundation in basic entomology through varied and diverse treatment to entomology, while focusing on specialized topics in insect ecology and biodiversity, forensic and medical entomology.
