Book excerpt: in the human visceral pleura is the sole reliable criterion for the statement that it belongs to the ‘thick type’, while all observed animals have a ‘thin’ type VP. The mesothelium and underlying structures of the SM represent a highly permeable bidirectional membrane with signi?cant differences in the organ and region tra- port as a local phenomenon after horseradish peroxidase application. Stomata are constant features seen by SEM, but are occasional ?ndings observed by TEM over both sides of the diaphragm, lower intercostal spaces, anterior abdominal wall and greater omentum in untreated animals. Our data extend the location of stomata over the liver and broad ligament of the uterus. We strictly de?ned and nominated the main structures of the lymphatic regions as lymphatic units, stomata, and LL. Several different types of vascularization of omental and extraomental (medias- nal pleura and lesser pelvis) MS are observed after India ink application. Human and animal differences in their location, mesothelial covering, the vessel (blood and lymphatic) supply, free and connective tissue cells and their arrangement are discussed. The mesothelium and the BL changes start early in the gestation and continue throughout the postnatal period. Both cell types (?at and cubic) are already evident through prenatal life.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Histological observations of human embryos hitherto have been carried out using paraffin sections of 5 to 10 μm thickness, stained with the H-E method or simply with carmine. Because of the thickness, cells are arranged in 2 or 3 layers in one section and the histological details are not always clear. This book provides detailed morphological features of a very well preserved human embryo with fifteen somites. The sections are about 0.75 μm thick and stained with toluidine blue. The thinness of sections and clearness of staining reveal the histological details of this embryo very accurately. A complete set of high quality photomicrographs are presented for each of the selected sections. The high resolution of the photomicrographs will enable easy comparison with the literature. The clear presentation in this book of embryonic development is increasingly important and highly relevant for in-vitro fertilization, and thus of interest to reproductive biologists as well as anatomists.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Muscle is the only tissue of the four basic types that make the body that can be completely ablated while allowing fetal survival. This book is a result of 25 years of research employing engineered mouse fetuses with no skeletal muscle, a model system that provides a unique opportunity to study body development holistically. A systematic anatomical analysis of such fetuses have shown that several anatomical locations are affected by the absence of the skeletal muscle. This book contains a summarized description of affected anatomical locations such as the alveolar lung epithelium, motor neurons and giant pyramidal cells in the CNS, cholinergic amacrine cells of the retina, and type I hair cells of the crista ampullaris. Several specific bioinformatics and systems biology interventions are also described. The book provides an update on skeletal muscle development, musculoskeletal developmental interactions, trophic relationships between the skeletal muscle and the motor neurons, mechanics of lung development, functional development of two special senses, eye and ear, and finally, skeletal muscle-related reasons for human fetal akinesia and its consequences. This volume in the Advances in Anatomy, Embryology and Cell Biology series stresses the need to think about the developing body and its organs in terms of their mutual interdependence, and to think about diseases, such as pulmonary hypoplasia, amyotrophic lateral sclerosis, or cleft palate, in terms of that interdependence. Directed to developmental biologists, neuroscientists, tissue engineers and health professionals, this book exposes the ideas of interorgan communication and interdependence in homeostasis and disease.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Pain is an unpleasant but very important biological signal for danger. Nociception is necessary for survival and maintaining the integrity of the organism in a potentially hostile environment. Pain is both a sensory experience and a perceptual metaphor for damage and it is activated by noxious stimuli that act on a complex pain sensory apparatus. However, chronic pain having no more a protective role can become a ruining disease itself, termed "neuropathic pain".

Book excerpt: In spite of the continuing progress of research in the fields of cellular and molecular biology, which has oriented many embryologists towards molecular biology, no concrete explanation of morphogenesis has yet been found. The present state of knowledge of heart development is characterized by an enormous discrepancy between the qualitative descriptions of what happens on the organ level and the more or less quantitative information on subcellular and molecular events. It is generally not understood how cells form tissues and how tissues generate particular forms of an organ. In an attempt to fill the gaps we systematically studied in the period 1968 to 1973 one of the general but rather neglected morphogenetic mechanisms which integrates cells into tissues and organs-cell death. Only a small part of our research on cell death in the development of chick, rat and human embryo hearts has as yet been published in extenso. Most of it has been communicated in papers delivered at different scientific meetings. We would like to use the opportunity offered by Advances to present a syn thesis and integrative review of our results. In this way the actual period of discovery of the existence of cell death and of its morphogenetic role in the heart development come to an end. This opens up the next phase of our research which consists in studies of how cell death is integrated with other morphogenetic mechanisms.

This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 143 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The studies described here were carried out in the Neuroregulation Group at the Department of Physiology of the University of Leiden. Over the last decade this group has, in close collaboration with the departments of neurosurgery and urology of the Academic Hospital of Leiden, studied development and regeneration of the spinal cord and its peripheral nerves both from a neuroanatomical and a clinical perspective. During this period the development of brainstem projections to the spinal cord of the rat was studied with a retrograde tracing technique. Horseradish peroxidase was injected into the spinal cord of rat fetuses, both at different ages, and at different levels of the spinal cord. These studies aimed to discover regularities in the behavior of descending fiber systems that could yield insight into the logic that the nervous system must employ to structure its connectional pattern during development. Such insight might then be applied to improve regeneration of the nervous system.
