Research indicates that students completing AP courses were better prepared to take on college course work and were able to earn college credit when successful on the AP exams. In addition, teachers participating in AP professional development have been credited with greater content and pedagogical knowledge. Finally, Advanced Placement programs are credited with improving the overall curricula of the school by creating a need for more rigorous prerequisite courses. Book excerpt: The purpose of this study is, based on the application of Tinto's student persistence theory, to explore whether AP course taking, as one pre-collegiate student background characteristic, impacts college students' persistence, academic achievements, and college completion. This study used the national Beginning Postsecondary Study 96/01 longitudinal data set collected by the National Center of Education Statistics (NCES), which includes 12,100 first-time postsecondary beginners over a period of 6 academic years from 1995/96 to 2000/01. In this study, students were categorized into three groups by their SAT scores. Logistical regression analysis indicated that overall students who took any AP course in high school were more likely to persist in college than their non-AP peers in most SAT categories. Students who took more AP courses were more likely to persist in college than those who took fewer. Multiple regressions analysis suggested that students who took any AP course and more AP courses were more likely to have higher GPAs at different points of time in college. Multiple regressions indicated that the AP taking, and the number of AP course taken contributed significantly to the prediction of time to graduate in most SAT categories. The AP course taking, and the number of AP courses taken are two critical factors in students' college persistence, academic achievements, and time to graduation. On the other hand, it was found that, at certain SAT categories, AP did not contribute significantly to the regression model of students' time to graduation. This study adds to the literature regarding Tinto's college persistence theory that students' academic integration greatly influences their persistence, college academic performance, and college completion.

A quantitative analysis of a twenty-one question survey was conducted in order to understand how AP classes create a successful high school graduate for the academic rigors of a postsecondary institution. The survey was administered to one-hundred first-year college freshmen at a large suburban state university in Georgia. The results of the quantitative survey yielded information in support of the research hypothesis and rejected the null hypothesis. The researcher was mindful of threats to both internal and external validity and implemented validation methods. A number of experts in the field of quantitative educational research determined the instrument, the data, and findings were valid and reliable.

Ideally, the most rigorous courses offered by high schools would provide students the greatest opportunities for collegiate academic success. The purpose of this study was to develop an understanding of how advanced placement courses affect college readiness and ultimately college academic success. This study investigated how advanced placement curricula affected college learning. The mixed method study used a Likert scale survey that collected demographic, perception, and open-ended responses. In addition to the survey, interviews were conducted to further clarify survey responses. Fifty-three college students participated in the survey and four of those students chose to partake in an interview. The researcher used the networking features of Facebook to procure participants and Facebook profile pages to help diversify the participant pool. Data from the study presented strong correlations to AP course enrollment and college academic success. This study found students who enrolled in AP courses, regardless of the number of courses taken and their college GPA, perceived their AP courses to have supported their college success through the development of college readiness skills. When analyzing survey data for each of the college readiness skills studied, the three skills the greatest percent of all participants believed affected their college success were problem solving, supporting arguments with evidence, and research writing.

Book excerpt: The College Board has enacted a policy to offer increased access to AP courses in order to provide equity and opportunities for previously underrepresented groups. While more non-traditional students are taking Advanced Placement (AP) classes, many struggle with the rigorous coursework. This study investigated the impact of support systems being offered to Advanced Placement students in order to increase their success on AP exams and in their AP courses. High school sophomores, juniors, and seniors participated in this study. Depending on whether or not a student attended the summer intervention led to which group they were categorized as, the control group or the experimental group. Results indicated that the study skills of textbook reading and time management showed a significant difference when compared to the other study skills tested by the survey instrument. On average, the participants felt more comfortable with performing the skill of textbook reading compared to the skills of note taking, memory, test preparation, concentration, and time management. On average, the participants felt the least comfortable performing the skill of time management. This study found that participants who attended the summer enrichment program did not score statistically higher on their final semester exams and end of course AP Exams compared to those students who did not attend the intervention. This study has implications for advanced placement curriculum, the development of high school student’s study skills, and student achievement in the classroom and on AP Exams. Background methodology, limitations, and implications for future research are discussed.

With the explosive growth in the past decade of the College Board's Advanced Placement (AP) Program there exists a huge segment of American high school education that must be examined to learn how to best educate advanced students. This study examines four Advanced Placement classes in four different disciplines at a small private high school in order to identify some common factors defining teacher effectiveness. Four teachers were observed four times each to collect data regarding their use of class time, the assignments they gave to their students, and their questioning strategies. The teachers were placed into two groups, high pass rate and low pass rate, based upon their prior students pass rate percentage on AP exams. The results of this study suggest some definite strategies that promote student success in Advanced Placement classes. These strategies also may promote student success in International Baccalaureate classes.

Many underrepresented students with the potential to succeed do not access or complete AP programs. However, some have participated and done well. This study employed a narrative inquiry qualitative design to explore underrepresented students' educational experiences who have successfully accessed college readiness opportunities through AP participation in high school. Narrative inquiry allowed me to examine students' lived experiences and their perceptions of the influence of school protective factors, including caring relationships, high expectations, and opportunities for meaningful participation. Academic Resilience was selected as the Theoretical framework because it attempts to explain why some students perform better and achieve academic success despite having experienced adversity and risk while others do not. The students in this study experienced caring relationships and high expectations within their home and school environments. The students exhibited a strong belief in themselves and their future orientation. The students were intrinsically motivated and driven to succeed in school. Overall, experiences with risk and adversity in school did not play a significant role in these students' lives. It is suggested that educators pay attention to what was revealed from the narratives of this study and begin building on them: 1) underrepresented students can access and succeed in AP program; 2) access and opportunity gaps exist for students in AP participation; 3) relationships with teachers matter; 4) students exhibited the ability to adapt; and 5) students demonstrated academic resilience through COVID-19 pandemic. By highlighting students' experiences and academic success stories in this study, underrepresented students in other urban school districts may experience similar academic opportunities.

This qualitative study investigated how teachers and guidance counselors contribute to the academic success of African-American students of high potential at a large suburban high school in the city of Cleveland. The purpose was to improve the participation and performance of these students in AP courses. Data indicates that (a) school employees (teachers and guidance counselors) can positively affect achievement, (b) their definitions of success shape these students' opportunities for achievement, and (c) developing the capacities of high-potential students necessitates supported access to a challenging curriculum. The College Board's report: Equity 2000: A Systemic Education Form Model stressed that although minority students who complete higher level math courses actually enroll in college at the same rate as their non-minority peers, a concern is that the minority students, especially African-American students, often have had a less demanding and relevant curricula. African-American students are not enrolled in or do not participate in a rigorous curriculum to the degree that non-minority students are participating. I collected data using observations, interviews, and focus groups. I targeted a large suburban high school that offered nineteen advanced placement courses, and one that had a reputation of effectiveness in supporting the academic success of African-American students. I determined why advanced placement courses were not a part of the curriculum design for these students and how to increase their enrollment in the courses.

Book excerpt: Advanced Placement (AP) and Dual Enrollment (DE) are two programs that allow high school students to earn college credits. The recent growth of these programs has been unprecedented. However, there is little evidence that compares how they fare in terms of improving college access and success. Using data from two cohorts of all high school students in Florida and controlling for schools' and students' characteristics (including prior achievement), this study examines the relative power of AP and DE in predicting students' college access and success. The study finds that both AP and DE are strongly associated with positive outcomes, but the enrollment outcomes are not the same for both programs. DE students are more likely than AP students to go to college after high school, but they are less likely to first enroll in a four-year college. Despite this difference in initial enrollment, the difference between DE and AP in terms of bachelor's degree attainment is much smaller and not statistically significant for some model specifications. In addition, the effect of DE is driven by courses taken at the local community college campus; there is no effect for DE courses taken at the high school.
