Book excerpt: The objective of the proposed research is to investigate the performance of advanced modulation formats, specifically modified duobinary return-to zero (MD-RZ) modulation scheme and its long-haul repeaterless transmission over standard single mode fiber (SMF). This research also focuses on phase modulation formats like differential phase shift keying (DPSK) and differential quadrature phase shift keying (DQPSK), specifically free spectral range (FSR) optimization and wavelength offset tolerance in direct detection of these phase modulated systems. In this research we present a novel and cost effective technique to generate a modified duobinary return-to-zero (MD-RZ) signal. Next, we attained experimental results for single channel and WDM repeaterless transmission using these MD-RZ signals. A numerical comparison is also drawn with other conventional MD-RZ transmitters. MD-RZ transmission characteristics are also studied numerically for 40 Gb/s WDM signals and compared with other two leading constant intensity phase modulated formats like DPSK and DQPSK. We also have presented experimental results for FSR optimization of DQPSK de-modulator for ultra-high data-rate systems in the presence of strong optical filtering. Choice of an optimal FSR beyond 1-bit delay in Mach-Zehnder delay interferometer (MZ-DI) helps relieving some of the degradations due to strong optical filtering. Wavelength offset tolerance is also experimentally measured and numerically investigated for DPSK and DQPSK modulation formats with different transmitter schemes employing intensity or phase modulators to achieve required phase shifts.

Data rate values in the order of several hundreds of TBps are expected in the near future. In order to cope with those expectations silicon based technologies are believed to be the best suited. Its naturally compatibility with CMOS easily enables the electronics and photonics co-integration. In the short-term the way increase data rates in next generation optical communication systems goes through using advanced modulation format and increase symbol rates. In the long-term view, new multiplexing techniques will be required. In this sense, mode division multiplexing is nowadays an attractive approach under consideration. In this Thesis work, the way to implement these new optical communication schemes is studied from the transmitter point of view. It includes, on a first part the modeling, design and characterization of silicon modulators. And in a second part, it includes the proposition, design and characterization of novel mode handling devices for mode division multiplexing.A new way of modeling silicon modulators has been developed. This new model permits to reduce the computation time of modulator analysis up to two orders of magnitude, while maintaining a good level of accuracy. Using the model, modulators based on lateral PN junctions and interdigitated PN junctions were designed to work in the O-Band of optical communications. Characterization work has been performed on these modulators with good results. Wide-open OOK (On Off Keying) eye diagrams with 10 dB extinction ratio were obtained at 10GBps. Furthermore, BPSK (Binary Phase Shift Keying) modulation was also demonstrated at 10GBps.New kind of mode converters and multiplexers, intended to work as mode division multiplexing subsystems have been proposed, designed, fabricated and characterized. Measured results show broad bandwidth operation with high extinction ratio.

Book excerpt: The future optical switched wavelength division multiplexed (WDM) networks will require all optical wavelength conversion to avoid contention in a node when two signals on the same wavelength are being switched to the same output fiber. These future networks will also employ advanced modulation formats in order to increase the capacity of optical networks. In order to perform wavelength conversion operations on advanced modulation formats, a coherent nonlinear process, such as four-wave mixing (FWM), is required to preserve the amplitude and phase information. The phase noise transfer problem has crucial significance for the exploitation of FWM-based wavelength converters for advanced modulation formats because the phase noise transfer degrades the overall system performance. In this work, the required optical signal to noise ratio (OSNR) and laser phase noise (linewidth) limits are calculated via Monte Carlo simulations for the wavelength conversion of advanced modulation formats including DQPSK and M-QAM. Due to the sensitivity of M-QAM signals with respect to phase noise, the conversion performance is investigated using two different decision-directed phase-locked loop carrier phase recovery algorithms. In order to develop a validated numerical model for all-optical wavelength conversion of advanced modulation formats, the required OSNR versus pump linewidth at two values of bit error rate (BER) of 10-3 and 10-4 for DQPSK, 16-QAM and 64-QAM are reported for degenerate and non-degenerate FWM. With these calculations, the performance of wavelength conversion of advanced modulation formats will be guaranteed by selecting lasers with linewidths below these linewidth limits. As a next step of this work, All-optical wavelength conversion of Nyquist-WDM Superchannel using FWM in an SOA based on advanced modulation formats such as DQPSK, 16 and 64- QAM are demonstrated.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the recent years, optical WDM communications with per-channel bit rate of 40 Gb/s and beyond have attracted strong research interest. By the end of the first half of 2007, 40 Gb/s systems have been deployed in some selected locations and started carrying real traffic. With the conventional intensity modulation and direct detection scheme, which has been widely adopted by 10 Gb/s systems, 40Gb/s systems can only achieve very limited transmission performance due to poor tolerance to the fiber detrimental effects, such as fiber chromatic dispersion, nonlinearity, and polarization mode dispersion (PMD). At 40 Gb/s, the optical signal spectral width is generally four times as broad as that at 10 Gb/s when the same modulation scheme is used. During the WDM system migration from 10 Gb/s to 40 Gb/s, some narrowband filtering elements, which were designed for 10 Gb/s systems or 50 GHz channel spacing systems, can cause strong signal filtering or large interchannel crosstalk at 40 Gb/s. In the past few years, a wide variety of techniques have been proposed to improve the performance of WDM transmissions at 40 Gb/s and beyond. Among the different techniques, the use of advanced modulation schemes has been shown to be quite effective in mitigating the transmission impairments. Deciding which modulation scheme to use is of strategic importance for WDM system vendors and network carriers when they are developing the next-generation high-speed optical networks. This book presents a collection of review chapters from leading researchers in the field. It focuses on some of the important modulation schemes and their latest research progresses, and also includes chapters on coding and signal detection schemes. The potential readers of the book include researchers who are interested in reviews and tutorials on specific topics, senior undergraduate students, graduate students and those who want to do research in optical WDM transmissions. The book has nine chapters. The first chapter by Y. Y. Wen, D.-S. Lee and A. Nirmalathas discusses carrier suppressed return-to-zero (CSRZ) modulation format in terms of its signal generation, its variations, characteristics and transmission performance. The second chapter by I. Lyubomirsky talks about the theoretical principles and some latest experimental research results in high-speed optical duobinary modulation and detection. Chapter 3, by C. Xu and X. Liu, presents an overview of differential phase shift keying modulation for high-speed optical transmission, including its system performance, a simplified simulation method, its implementation, and some simulation and experimental results on alternative phase shift keying formats. In the subsequent chapter, H.- C. Wang and K.-P. Ho talk about the principles and algorithms of time-resolved optical filtering (TROF) measurement and show TROF measured results for optical phase-modulated signals. In chapter 5, C. Yu compares the transmission performance of some advanced modulation formats for 40 Gb/s DWDM systems under 50 GHz channel spacing, and further introduces optical minimum shift keying modulation format. The sixth chapter by C. Xie and I. Kang discusses alternate polarization modulation formats, signal generation methods and their tolerance to fiber detrimental effects. Chapter 7, by A. Chowdhury, J. Yu and G.-K. Chang, presents a modulation scheme which multiplexes two sub-channels through optical carrier suppression and separation (OCSS) technique. In Chapter 8, D. Fonseca, A. V. T. Cartaxo and P. Monteiro review and compare three different optical single sideband (OSSB) generation techniques, and further study the use of electrical dispersion compensation (EDC) with OSSB signals. In the concluding chapter, I. Djordjevic describes and analyzes several novel coding methods to counter the fiber nonlinear effects in high-speed WDM systems. Naturally, this book would not have been done without the time and effort of the contributing authors, and I am very grateful to them. I would like to acknowledge Dr. S. G. Pandalai at Research Signpost for his invitation to me of editing this book. I would like to thank Dr. Ting Wang, who is the department head of the optical network division at NEC Laboratories America, for his valuable support.

Book excerpt: The rapid proliferation of the Internet has been driving communication networks closer and closer to their limits, while available bandwidth is disappearing due to an ever-increasing network load. Over the past decade, optical fiber communication technology has increased per fiber data rate from 10 Tb/s to exceeding 10 Pb/s. The major explosion came after the maturity of coherent detection and advanced digital signal processing (DSP). DSP has played a critical role in accommodating channel impairments mitigation, enabling advanced modulation formats for spectral efficiency transmission and realizing flexible bandwidth. This book aims to explore novel, advanced DSP techniques to enable multi-Tb/s/channel optical transmission to address pressing bandwidth and power-efficiency demands. It provides state-of-the-art advances and future perspectives of DSP as well.

Book excerpt: Advanced optical modulation and multiplexing techniques have become a key ingredient to the design of modern WDM optically routed networks. This book, reviews the generation and detection of multigigabit/second intensity- and phase modulated formats and highlights their resilience to key impairments found in optical networking, such as optical amplifier noise, chromatic dispersion, WDM crosstalk and fiber nonlinearity. A novel multiplexing technique, namely Absolute Polar Duty Cycle Division Multiplexing (AP-DCDM) which is based on the polar signaling and different return to zero (RZ) duty cycles is reported for high speed optical fiber communication systems. Unlike all the other techniques, in AP-DCDM different users share the communication medium to transmit in the same time period and at the same carrier wavelength, but with different duty cycles. The unique duty cycle for each channel helps to regenerate data at the receiver

Book excerpt: Ever increasing demand for network capacity is driving the development of optical communication systems to cover recently proposed Terabit Ethernet standards. Short haul applications need low cost and low complexity solutions with direct detection, as the cost of coherent detection comes down, it will become a good candidate for future short-haul applications to increase spectral efficiency and exploit advanced modulation formats. In this thesis, we investigate solutions for both current and future short-haul systems. In the first part, we focus on solutions for short haul applications. The first chapter is the first time demonstration of more than 100 Gb/s discrete multi-tone (DMT) transmission using an O-band silicon photonics (SiP). We experimentally compare DMT with pulse amplitude modulation (PAM) on O-band. Our experiment shows that by increasing fiber length more than 10 km, PAM outperforms DMT. For C-band, we use single sideband discrete multi-tone (SSB-DMT) to avoid chromatic dispersion-induced power fading e_ect. We study the effect of phase noise, chromatic dispersion, and receiver sensitivity to optimize DMT signal and extract theoretical equations to calculate bit error rate (BER) of SSB-DMT. Next, we analytically compare PAM on O-band with SSB-DMT on C-band and quantify the impact of hardware-imposed limitations on both modulation formats. Our study provides an analytical tool for short haul applications to select appropriate modulation format and hardware based on required reach, bit rate, etc. In the second part we examine complex modulation formats that will be enabled in the future by low cost, integrated components for coherent detection.. We use an advanced modulation format in which we combined discrete Fourier transform spread with DMT to increase spectral efficiency. Hybrid modulation format has a lower peak to average power ratio (vis-a-vis DMT) and higher spectral efficiency (vis-a-vis single carrier QAM). In the first step, we experimentally compare the performance of the hybrid, standard DMT, and single carrier modulations using a SiP IQ modulator. Next, we develop a driving strategy for hybrid modulation format by trading off the modulator transfer function non-linearity and optical signal to noise ratio. Then hybrid modulation format is optimized to have maximum throughput. Using Monte Carlo simulation we compare optimized hybrid modulation format with standard DMT for different bit rates. Finally, we have a complexity comparison between hybrid and DMT for different fiber lengths to motivate same investigation for long-haul applications where, we should consider fiber non-linearity, attenuation,a polarization multiplexing.

Book excerpt: In this book, semiconductor optical amplifiers (SOAs) are studied with a view to linear and nonlinear applications in next-generation optical networks. Quantum-dot SOAs can be optimized for linear amplification of signals with different modulation formats and multiplexing techniques. Conversely, bulk SOAs can be easily optimized for operation in the nonlinear regime. However, due to the fast carrier recovery times in QD SOAs we also look into nonlinear applications with these devices.
