Book excerpt: Predictive models of Li-ion battery reliability must consider a multiplicity of electrochemical, thermal and mechanical degradation modes experienced by batteries in application environments. Complicating matters, Li-ion batteries can experience several path dependent degradation trajectories dependent on storage and cycling history of the application environment. Rates of degradation are controlled by factors such as temperature history, electrochemical operating window, and charge/discharge rate. Lacking accurate models and tests, lifetime uncertainty must be absorbed by overdesign and warranty costs. Degradation models are needed that predict lifetime more accurately and with less test data. Models should also provide engineering feedback for next generation battery designs. This presentation reviews both multi-dimensional physical models and simpler, lumped surrogate models of battery electrochemical and mechanical degradation. Models are compared with cell- and pack-level aging data from commercial Li-ion chemistries. The analysis elucidates the relative importance of electrochemical and mechanical stress-induced degradation mechanisms in real-world operating environments. Opportunities for extending the lifetime of commercial battery systems are explored.

Book excerpt: Abstract: A crucial step towards the large-scale introduction of plug-in hybrid electric vehicles (PHEVs) in the market is to reduce the cost of their energy storage systems. One of the goals of U.S Department of Energy (DOE) Vehicle Technologies Program for hybrid electric systems is to, by 2014, reduce the production cost of Li-ion batteries by nearly 70 percent from 2009 costs. Currently, battery cycle- and calendar-life represents one of the greatest uncertainties in the total life-cycle cost of advanced energy storage devices. Batteries are inherently subject to aging. Aging is the reduction in performance, availability, reliability, and life span of a system or component. The generation of long-term predictions describing the evolution of the aging in time for the purpose of predicting the Remaining Useful Life (RUL) of a system may be understood as Prognosis. The field of battery prognosis has seen progress with respect to model based and data driven algorithms to model aging and estimate RUL of battery cells. However, in advanced battery systems, cells are interconnected and aging propagates. The aging propagation from one cell to others exhibits itself in a reduced system life. Propagation of aging has a profound effect on the accuracy of battery systems state of health (SOH) assessment and prognosis. This thesis proposes a systematic methodology for modeling the propagation of aging in advanced battery systems. The modeling approach is such that it is able to predict battery pack aging, thermal, and electrical dynamics under actual PHEV operation, and includes consideration of random variability of the cells, electrical topology and thermal management. The modeling approach is based on the interaction between dynamic system models and dynamic models of aging propagation. The system level SOH is assessed based on knowledge of individual cells SOH, electrical topology and voltage equalization approach. The proposed methodology is used to develop a computational model-based design tool that can assist in the evaluation of trade-offs between, performance, manufacturing quality, system complexity, battery management approach, and life-cycle. The tool may be used for verification and validation of control algorithms such as estimation and identification, in particular for battery management systems including health management. The proposed methodology constitutes the first steps towards an integrated system design with 'a priori' consideration of health management.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Large-scale battery packs are needed in hybrid and electric vehicles, utilities grid backup and storage, and frequency-regulation applications. In order to maximize battery-pack safety, longevity, and performance, it is important to understand how battery cells work. This first of its kind new resource focuses on developing a mathematical understanding of how electrochemical (battery) cells work, both internally and externally. This comprehensive resource derives physics-based micro-scale model equations, then continuum-scale model equations, and finally reduced-order model equations. This book describes the commonly used equivalent-circuit type battery model and develops equations for superior physics-based models of lithium-ion cells at different length scales. This resource also presents a breakthrough technology called the “discrete-time realization algorithm” that automatically converts physics-based models into high-fidelity approximate reduced-order models.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Battery Management Systems - Design by Modelling describes the design of Battery Management Systems (BMS) with the aid of simulation methods. The basic tasks of BMS are to ensure optimum use of the energy stored in the battery (pack) that powers a portable device and to prevent damage inflicted on the battery (pack). This becomes increasingly important due to the larger power consumption associated with added features to portable devices on the one hand and the demand for longer run times on the other hand. In addition to explaining the general principles of BMS tasks such as charging algorithms and State-of-Charge (SoC) indication methods, the book also covers real-life examples of BMS functionality of practical portable devices such as shavers and cellular phones. Simulations offer the advantage over measurements that less time is needed to gain knowledge of a battery's behaviour in interaction with other parts in a portable device under a wide variety of conditions. This knowledge can be used to improve the design of a BMS, even before a prototype of the portable device has been built. The battery is the central part of a BMS and good simulation models that can be used to improve the BMS design were previously unavailable. Therefore, a large part of the book is devoted to the construction of simulation models for rechargeable batteries. With the aid of several illustrations it is shown that design improvements can indeed be realized with the presented battery models. Examples include an improved charging algorithm that was elaborated in simulations and verified in practice and a new SoC indication system that was developed showing promising results. The contents of Battery Management Systems - Design by Modelling is based on years of research performed at the Philips Research Laboratories. The combination of basic and detailed descriptions of battery behaviour both in chemical and electrical terms makes this book truly multidisciplinary. It can therefore be read both by people with an (electro)chemical and an electrical engineering background.

This book was released on 2015 with total page 288 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The primary objective of this dissertation is to present a new method of modeling the charging and discharging processes of lithium-ion batteries, investigate their effectiveness and explore their applications. The primary contributions of this research work include development of adaptive time series models for modeling the charging and discharging processes of individual lithium-ion cells, extension of the above concepts to multi-cell lithium-ion batteries, and development of a new scheme for predicting the state of health of lithium-ion batteries. The battery charge/discharge time series model introduced here consists of a group of piecewise linear time-invariant models, whose parameters are adapted online over time. Thus, the combined overall model is capable of modeling a nonlinear time-varying process, such as a li-ion battery charging/discharging process, quite well. Such models are appealing, because the piecewise linear nature of such models can account for the nonlinear characteristics of a battery. Also, the time-adaptive nature of such models account for the time-varying voltage-current characteristics of a battery quite well. To validate the theory, modeling results for both simulated test data and experimental data gathered from a high-power automotive-grade Li-ion cell are presented. The above modeling concept is then extended to model the charging and discharging processes of multi-cell lithium-ion batteries. To validate the theory, modeling results for simulated test data are presented. Finally, as an application of the proposed modeling strategy, a new scheme for estimating the state of health of lithium-ion batteries is presented. To validate the theory, modeling results for simulated test data are presented. The results obtained from our simulation and experimental studies demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed modeling strategy and indicate the potential usefulness of such models for a battery management system.

Along with an initial optimal design of the cell/pack-level structure, the runtime performance of the battery needs to be continuously monitored and optimized for a safe and reliable operation and prolonged life. Improved charging techniques need to be developed to protect and preserve the battery. The scope of this Special Issue is to address all the above issues by promoting innovative design concepts, modeling and state estimation techniques, charging/discharging management, and hybridization with other storage components.
