Book excerpt: Symposium Q, "Structural Materials and Fuels for Future Fusion and Fission Technologies," Symposium R, "Radiation Damage to Ceramic and Insulating Materials for Nuclear Power," and Symposium T, "Nanostructured Materials in Harsh Environments," were held Nov. 29-Dec. 3 at the 2010 MRS Fall Meeting in Boston, Massachusetts. The underlying theme behind the papers is that of materials for next-generation technologies, especially fusion and fission energy production and the nanoscale properties of these materials when subjected to high temperature and pressure. In many cases, joint experimental and modeling programs to minimize expensive trial-and-error techniques are underway to understand the fundamental processes that are at the basis of the materials. This combined approach is optimal to design novel new materials that can withstand the higher operating temperature, high radiation doses, and complex thermomechanical loading required in the next-generation nuclear systems. This volume highlights some emerging topics in novel mechanical testing techniques, in situ microscopy, high- and low-temperature deformation mechanisms, radiation damage investigations and mechanical property characterization of materials, as well as recent advances in atomistic and multiscale modeling.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Volume is indexed by Thomson Reuters CPCI-S (WoS).The development of materials designed for application in extreme environments is a very active field of research. In recent years, it has been realized by the materials science community that solutions to demanding applications in different fields can be identified by implementing common materials concepts. Research effort and technological development, driven by application requirements, are now a bridge between apparently separate communities. As first realized by the European Integrated Project "ExtreMat - New Materials for Extreme Applications", common materials solutions are now being sought and found in the fields of thermal management materials, protective materials, radiation-resistant materials, bonding and interfaces, as well as advanced materials characterization and application-oriented testing. This special collection is divided into: I. Overview; II. Protection Materials; III. Heat Sinks; IV. Bonding and Interfaces; V. Radiation-Resistant Materials; VI. Advanced Materials Characterization and Testing. It provides incomparable coverage of the current state of the art. The 58 papers in this collection were selected from those presented during the 1st International Conference on New Materials for Extreme Environments held in San Sebastian, Spain, in June 2008. The purpose of the conference was to unite materials researchers to discuss materials solutions in the areas of nuclear fission, advanced nuclear fission, electronics, space, and others. The general topics reflect those discussions and include: protection materials, heat sinks, bonding and interfaces, radiation resistant materials, and advanced materials characterization and testing. Editors are Linsmeier and Reinelt, for whom no background information is given.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book investigates the fundamental properties and response of materials in extreme environments such as static and dynamic high pressure, high strain and high strain-rates, high radiation and electromagnetic fields, high and low temperatures, corrosive conditions, environments causing embrittlement, and environments containing atomic oxygen. This is an extremely active and vibrant field of research, in particular because it is now possible to create laboratory conditions similar in pressure, temperature and radiation to those found in planetary interiors and in space. In addition, advanced simulation methods, coupled with high-performance computing platforms, now afford predictions - on a first-principles basis - of the properties of materials in extreme environments. Scientists from a broad spectrum of fields are represented, including space science, planetary science, high-pressure research, shock physics, ultrafast science, and energetic materials research.

Does the identification number 1035 indicate ethane or butane? What is the difference between natural gas transmission pipelines and natural gas distribution pipelines? If you came upon an overturned truck on the highway that was leaking, would you be able to identify if it was hazardous and know what steps to take? Questions like these and more are answered in the Emergency Response Guidebook. Learn how to identify symbols for and vehicles carrying toxic, flammable, explosive, radioactive, or otherwise harmful substances and how to respond once an incident involving those substances has been identified. Always be prepared in situations that are unfamiliar and dangerous and know how to rectify them. Keeping this guide around at all times will ensure that, if you were to come upon a transportation situation involving hazardous substances or dangerous goods, you will be able to help keep others and yourself out of danger. With color-coded pages for quick and easy reference, this is the official manual used by first responders in the United States and Canada for transportation incidents involving dangerous goods or hazardous materials.
