Book excerpt: Nuclear electric propulsion (NEP), compared with chemical and nuclear thermal propulsion (NTP), can effectively deliver the same mass to Mars using much less propellant, consequently requiring less mass delivered to Earth orbit. The lower thrust of NEP requires a spiral trajectory near planetary bodies, which significantly increases the travel time. Although the total travel time is long, the portion of the flight time spent during interplanetary transfer is shorter, because the vehicle is thrusting for much longer periods of time. This has led to the supposition that NEP, although very attractive for cargo missions, is not suitable for piloted missions to Mars. However, with the application of a hybrid approach to propulsion, the benefits of NEP can be utilized while drastically reducing the overall travel time required. Development of a dual-mode system, which utilizes high-thrust NTP to propel the spacecraft from the planetary gravitational influence and low-thrust NEP to accelerate in interplanetary space, eliminates the spiral trajectory and results in a much faster transit time than could be obtained by either NEP or NTP alone. This results in a mission profile with a lower initial mass in low Earth orbit. In addition, the propulsion system would have the capability to provide electrical power for mission applications.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A simple family of indirect-transfer trajectories between circular orbits is used to evaluate the mass ratio required to complete round-trip interplanetary missions using low-thrust propulsion systems. These trajectories, although not optimum, yielded very substantial reductions in total round-trip time for Mars missions with moderate increases in initial weight. For a powerplant specific weight [alpha] of 10 pounds per kilowatt of jet power, trip times were reduced from 1200 to 600 days, for a typical manned mission, with an initial weight increase of a factor of two. Comparison with a nuclear rocket with 1000-second specific impulse indicated that the electric-propulsion system required less initial weight for trip times as low as 550 days with [alpha]=10 and as low at 400 days with [alpha]=5 pounds per kilowatt. Further weight reductions would be expected with more nearly optimum trajectories.

Book excerpt: In 2003, NASA began an R&D effort to develop nuclear power and propulsion systems for solar system exploration. This activity, renamed Project Prometheus in 2004, was initiated because of the inherent limitations in photovoltaic and chemical propulsion systems in reaching many solar system objectives. To help determine appropriate missions for a nuclear power and propulsion capability, NASA asked the NRC for an independent assessment of potentially highly meritorious missions that may be enabled if space nuclear systems became operational. This report provides a series of space science objectives and missions that could be so enabled in the period beyond 2015 in the areas of astronomy and astrophysics, solar system exploration, and solar and space physics. It is based on but does not reprioritize the findings of previous NRC decadal surveys in those three areas.

Book excerpt: A comparison is made between nuclear thermal rockets and nuclear powered electric propulsion systems. Complete missions are designed to be launched by a single Ariane 5 and fly by Jupiter and Pluto powered either by a nuclear thermal system or a nuclear powered electric system. It is shown that it is feasible to build both nuclear thermal and nuclear electric missions to Jupiter and Pluto. Nuclear thermal systems are designed to go to Jupiter with an inert mass fraction of 0.6094, a power of 281.23 MW and a flight time of 4.13 years. Nuclear thermal systems are designed to go to Pluto with an inert mass fraction of 0.4182, a power of 281.23 MW and a flight time of 19 years. Nuclear electric systems are designed to go to Jupiter with an inert mass fraction of 0.5266, a power of 10.258 kW and a flight time of 4.13 years. Nuclear electric systems are designed to go to Pluto with an inert mass fraction of 0.2656, a power of 10.258 kW and a flight time of 19 years. The results of the system designs are analyzed and an outlook is given for each system. Additional issues of testing, safety and radiological hazards are discussed.

Book excerpt: ABSTRACT: Past mission analysis studies for interplanetary missions have typically focused on assessing one power and propulsion system applied to a singular mission. This has led to a lack of comparable results for different power and propulsion systems, and limited systematic procedures for mission planning. We attempted to address these faults through a comprehensive trade study on NTR, NEP, and Hybrid power and propulsion systems, grouped by NTR fuel type or electric thruster type into eleven configurations. Ephemeris codes were used to investigate mission planning and departure options, and vehicle models were developed and then analyzed through parametric performance plots. Lastly, measures of effectiveness were defined and used to assess a tradespace matrix containing all vehicle configurations applied to twelve optimized reference missions. This assessment provided a simplified ranking of specific vehicle designs for each given interplanetary mission, along with a comparison of vehicle performance based on important figures of merit such as propellant mass and IMLEO.

Book excerpt: A project in Nuclear Electric Propulsion (NEP) technology is being established to develop the NEP technologies needed for advanced propulsion systems. A paced approach has been suggested which calls for progressive development of NEP component and subsystem level technologies. This approach will lead to major facility testing to achieve TRL-5 for megawatt NEP for SEI mission applications. This approach is designed to validate NEP power and propulsion technologies from kilowatt class to megawatt class ratings. Such a paced approach would have the benefit of achieving the development, testing, and flight of NEP systems in an evolutionary manner. This approach may also have the additional benefit of synergistic application with SEI extraterrestrial surface nuclear power applications. Doherty, Michael P. and Holcomb, Robert S.
