Book excerpt: This fully revised and updated edition of "Handbook of Combustion" - the standard work on this topic - comes with 30% more content and an extended new editorial team with two more renowned experts. The new edition combines the strength of the previous one while increasing the scope by additional chapters on unconventional natural gas, boiling liquid expanding vapor explosion (BLEVE) and smog formation, and by expanding existing topics, e.g., biofuels and chemical looping combustion. The work is divided in five topics: 1) Fundamentals and Safety, 2) Combustion Diagnostics and Pollutants, 3) Gaseous and Liquid Fuels, 4) Solid Fuels, and 5) New Technologies. Cross-references in and between the topics guide the reader to the content of interest and provide access to additional subjects. This major reference summarizes all significant information on combustion such as the chemistry, physics, and modeling of combustion processes, spectroscopic methods, safety regulations, pollutants formation, fuel types and, not the least, environmental impacts. The Handbook of Combustion is a complete and impressive work written for academic as well as industrial researchers and developers. Reviewer quotes (amazon): "... the entire area of combustion, including gasification and new technologies, is described in a clear and comprehensive way." "... this is a unique handbook, which closes a big gap in the literature."

Book excerpt: In combating global warming and other environmental issues over the use of fossil fuels, extensive research has been focusing on developing hydrogen production from biological processes. Biohydrogen is considered a promising future biofuel because of its intrinsic clean and high-energy content properties and the way it is produced. In addition to being produced through environmentally friendly biological means, its conversion to energy yields only pure water, which is an ideal energy carrier in reducing greenhouse gas emissions from fossil fuel combustion. Unlike other well-developed biofuels such as bioethanol and biodiesel, biohydrogen production is still in the early stage of development. A variety of technologies are being developed for biohydrogen production. This chapter presents a review of the state-of-the-art and perspectives of bioprocess design for biohydrogen production research in the context of pathways, microorganisms, metabolic flux analysis, process design, and reactor system. Challenges and prospects of biohydrogen production are also outlined.

Book excerpt: From valiant pioneers struggling against the tide to confident, highly individual twenty-first-century voices, The Invisible Art highlights the difficulties musical creators faced in securing a clearly defined place in wider Irish society. This book brings to life the music of a nation: from Rhoda Coghill's cantata Out of the Cradle Endlessly Rocking, to Gerald Barry's irreverent operatic adaptation of Oscar Wilde's The Importance of Being Earnest. The views of the composers themselves are coupled with contributions by leading interpreters and experts to make for a rich narrative in this lavishly illustrated homage to an underappreciated art. Published in association with RTA and Bord na M ? ? ? 3na, and with pieces commissioned from an array of expert writers covering this key period in Irish musical composition, this lavishly illustrated book will bring to life this unique art form in Ireland across the last century. It is edited by Irish Times music critic Michael Dervan and produced in conjunction with the music festival Composing the Island, a three-week-long festival featuring music written between 1916 and 2016, presented by Bord na M ? ? ? 3na in association with RTA and the National Concert Hall. Readers will find The Invisible Art to be a work of outstanding artistic and cultural merit, and a must-have on any music lover's bookshelf. *** "Michael Dervan has assembled a gallery of diverse voices to hymn the multitudinous endeavours -- and pleasures -- of an island that is at last making itself heard." --Paul Griffiths Subject: Music History, Music Studies, Irish Studies]

This book was released on 2013 with total page 374 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The first genuinely interdisciplinary study of creativity in early modern England In the seventeenth century, the concept of creativity was far removed from most of the fundamental ideas about the creative act - notions of human imagination, inspiration, originality and genius - that developed in the eighteenthand nineteenth centuries. Instead, in this period, students learned their crafts by copying and imitating past masters and did not consciously seek to break away from tradition. Most new material was made on the instructions of apatron and had to conform to external expectations; and basic tenets that we tend to take for granted-such as the primacy and individuality of the author-were apparently considered irrelevant in some contexts. The aim of this interdisciplinary collection of essays is to explore what it meant to create buildings and works of art, music and literature in seventeenth-century England and to investigate the processes by which such creations came into existence. Through a series of specific case studies, the book highlights a wide range of ideas, beliefs and approaches to creativity that existed in seventeenth-century England and places them in the context of the prevailing intellectual, social and cultural trends of the period. In so doing, it draws into focus the profound changes that were emerging in the understanding of human creativity in early modern society - transformations that would eventually lead to the development of a more recognisably modern conception of the notion of creativity. The contributors work in and across the fields of literary studies, history, musicology, history of art and history of architecture, and their work collectively explores many of the most fundamental questions about creativity posed by the early modern English 'creative arts'. REBECCA HERISSONE is Head of Music and Senior Lecturer in Musicology at the University of Manchester. ALAN HOWARD is Lecturer in Music at the University of East Anglia and Reviews Editor for Eighteenth-Century Music. Contributors: Linda Phyllis Austern, Stephanie Carter, John Cunningham, Marina Daiman, Kirsten Gibson, Raphael Hallett, Rebecca Herissone, Anne Hultzsch, Freyja Cox Jensen, Stephen Rose, Andrew R. Walkling, Amanda Eubanks Winkler, James A. Winn.

Book excerpt: Annotation In, Martin Heidegger set out an anti-Cartesian attack on Husserl that argued Cartesian philosophy falsely separates the subject from the world. In turn, Alweiss (philosophy, Trinity College, Ireland) contends that Heidegger failed in his attempt to, in her words, "reclaim the world." She defends Husserl's work, detailing the epistemological debate between the two philosophers, and thereby examining a central concern of modern analytic philosophy as it played out in the very different tradition of Continental thinking. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book covers concepts and the latest developments on microscale flow and heat transfer phenomena involving a gas. The book is organised in two parts: the first part focuses on the fluid flow and heat transfer characteristics of gaseous slip flows. The second part presents modelling of such flows using higher-order continuum transport equations. The Navier-Stokes equations based solution is provided to various problems in the slip regime. Several interesting characteristics of slip flows along with useful empirical correlations are documented in the first part of the book. The examples bring out the failure of the conventional equations to adequately describe various phenomena at the microscale. Thereby the readers are introduced to higher order continuum transport (Burnett and Grad) equations, which can potentially overcome these limitations. A clear and easy to follow step by step derivation of the Burnett and Grad equations (superset of the Navier-Stokes equations) is provided in the second part of the book. Analytical solution of these equations, the latest developments in the field, along with scope for future work in this area are also brought out. Presents characteristics of flow in the slip and transition regimes for a clear understanding of microscale flow problems; Provides a derivation of Navier-Stokes equations from microscopic viewpoint; Features a clear and easy to follow step-by-step approach to derive Burnett and Grad equations; Describes a complete compilation of few known exact solutions of the Burnett and Grad equations, along with a discussion of the solution aided with plots; Introduces the variants of the Navier-Stokes, Burnett and Grad equations, including the recently proposed Onsager-Burnett and O13 moment equations.
