Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The design and construction of “long and deep” tunnels, i.e. tunnels under mountains, characterised by either considerable length and/or overburden, represent a considerable challenge. The scope of this book is not to instruct how to design and construct such tunnels but to share a method to identify the potential hazards related to the process of designing and constructing long and deep tunnels, to produce a relevant comprehensive analysis and listing, to quantify the probability and consequences, and to design proper mitigation measures and countermeasures. The design, developed using probabilistic methods, is verified during execution by means of the so called Plan for Advance of the Tunnel (PAT) method, which allows adapting the design and control parameters of the future stretches of the tunnel to the results of the stretches already finished, using the monitoring data base. Numerous criteria are given to identify the key parameters, necessary for the PAT procedure. Best practices of excavation management with the help of real time monitoring and control are also provided. Furthermore cost and time evaluation systems are analysed. Finally, contractual aspects related to construction by contract are investigated, for best development and application of models more appropriate for tunnelling-construction contracts. The work will be of interest to practising engineers, designers, consultants and students in mining, underground, tunnelling, transportation and construction engineering, as well as to foundation and geological engineers, urban planners/developers and architects.

Book excerpt: One of the main, ongoing challenges for any engineering enterprise is that systems are built of materials subject to environmental degradation. Whether working with an airframe, integrated circuit, bridge, prosthetic device, or implantable drug-delivery system, understanding the chemical stability of materials remains a key element in determining their useful life. Environmental Degradation of Advanced and Traditional Engineering Materials is a monumental work for the field, providing comprehensive coverage of the environmental impacts on the full breadth of materials used for engineering infrastructure, buildings, machines, and components. The book discusses fundamental degradation processes and presents examples of degradation under various environmental conditions. Each chapter presents the basic properties of the class of material, followed by detailed characteristics of degradation, guidelines on how to protect against corrosion, and a description of testing procedures. A complete, self-contained industrial reference guide, this valuable resource is designed for students and professionals interested in the development of deterioration-resistant technological systems constructed with metallurgical, polymeric, ceramic, and natural materials.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The objective of this project was to develop an asphalt mix design method incorporating crumb rubber and using the "Wet" or "Dry" method of producing Crumb Rubber Modified Asphalt (CRM). Several resurfacing projects have been constructed using both the "Wet" and "Dry" methods. Based on this study, the Kansas Department of Transportation could use CRM mixes with a binder content between 7.5% and 9.0% depending on the percent air voids, with 19% to 22% rubber content. In this study, it was observed that using 24% rubber produced mixes that were too sticky to manage. With a rubber content of less than 18% combined with AC-5 it was difficult to satisfy the minimum viscosity requirements. Fracture tests can be used as a basis to determine the optimum binder content for any asphalt-rubber mix.

Book excerpt: Climate change, energy production and consumption, and the need to improve the sustainability of all aspects of human activity are key inter-related issues for which solutions must be found and implemented quickly and efficiently. To be successfully implemented, solutions must recognize the rapidly changing socio-techno-political environment and multi-dimensional constraints presented by today’s interconnected world. As part of this global effort, considerations of climate change impacts, energy demands, and incorporation of sustainability concepts have increasing importance in the design, construction, and maintenance of highway and airport pavement systems. To prepare the human capacity to develop and implement these solutions, many educators, policy-makers and practitioners have stressed the paramount importance of formally incorporating sustainability concepts in the civil engineering curriculum to educate and train future civil engineers well-equipped to address our current and future sustainability challenges. This book will prove a valuable resource in the hands of researchers, educators and future engineering leaders, most of whom will be working in multidisciplinary environments to address a host of next-generation sustainable transportation infrastructure challenges. "This book proposes a broad detailed overview of the actual scientific knowledge about pavements linked to climate change, energy and sustainability at the international level in an original multidimensional/multi-effects way. By the end, the reader will be aware of the whole global issues to care about for various pavement technical features around the world, among which the implications of modelling including data collection, challenging resources saving and infrastructures services optimisation. This is a complete and varied work, rare in the domain." Dr. Agnes Jullien Research Director Director of Environmental, Development, Safety and Eco-Design Laboratory (EASE) Department of Development, Mobility and Environment Ifsttar Centre de Nantes Cedex- France “An excellent compilation of latest developments in the field of sustainable pavements. The chapter topics have been carefully chosen and are very well-organized with the intention of equipping the reader with the state-of-the-art knowledge on all aspects of pavement sustainability. Topics covered include pavement Life Cycle Analysis (LCA), pervious pavements, cool pavements, photocatalytic pavements, energy harvesting pavements, etc. which will all be of significant interest to students, researchers, and practitioners of pavement engineering. This book will no doubt serve as an excellent reference on the topic of sustainable pavements.” Dr. Wei-Hsing Huang Editor-in-Chief of International Journal of Pavement Research and Technology (IJPRT) and Professor of Civil Engineering National Central University Taiwan

Book excerpt: This study characterizes the interaction of asphalt with Crumb Rubber Modifier (CRM) using performance testing as used by SHRP. The study provides an understanding of the property development as asphalt interacted with CRM. Two main types of activities are discussed in the paper: particle swelling and depolymerization. Two types of interactions are considered: a short-term interaction that explains the property development mechanism and a long-term interaction where the property stabilizes. The effect of CRM properties on the developed properties is discussed in details.

This book was released on 2013 with total page 16 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Asphalt mixture performance tests (AMPTs) are developed to complement the Superpave volumetric mix design procedure and to reliably measure the mechanical response characteristics of the asphalt mixtures. The AMPT protocols, such as dynamic modulus, flow time and flow number test protocols, and the computational algorithms for post-processing of data are in the development stages and require further refinement. In this investigation, AMPTs were carried out on asphalt mixtures with unmodified, polymer-modified, and crumb-rubber-modified binders. Dynamic modulus test was carried out for a wide range of temperatures and frequencies and master curves were constructed. It was observed that the American Association of State Highway and Transportation Officials (AASHTO) procedure for master curves does not take into account the influence of phase angle, and this could hinder the effective use of this input in pavement design and analysis. Flow time and flow number tests were carried out for an extended time of 100 000 s (cycles) rather than the currently practised 10 000 s (cycles) protocol. The test data was used in assessing the various algorithms for evaluating flow values. A wheel tracking test was also carried out and it was found that the response of mixtures could be correlated to wheel tracking test results in a qualitative manner to the flow time test.
