Book excerpt: Sacred Gifts and Holy Gatherings This winter, lessons in Adult Bible Studies follow the theme “Sacred Gifts and Holy Gatherings.” The student book writer is Chuck Aaron; Martha Myre is the writer for the teacher book. Unit 1 What We Bring to God The quarter’s first four lessons explore the concepts of sabbath, giving offerings, celebrations, and giving from the heart by examining biblical texts from Exodus, Leviticus, Luke, Matthew, and Mark. The Lord’s Day (Exodus 20:8-11; 31:12-16) Acceptable Offerings (Leviticus 22:17-25, 31-33) Dedication of Firstborn (Exodus 13:13-15; Luke 2:22-32) A Generous Gift (Matthew 23:2-12; Mark 12:38-44) Unit 2 Four Weddings and a Funeral The first lesson in this unit reviews the relationship between Jacob and Rachel from the Book of Genesis, followed by a lesson from the Song of Solomon. The third lesson examines the relationship between Hosea and Gomer and deals with broken relationships, while the following lesson takes us to the Gospel of John and Jesus’ miracle at the wedding in Cana. The final lesson in this unit, again from John’s Gospel, deals with the death of Jesus’ dear friend Lazarus. A Bride Worth Waiting For (Genesis 29:15-30) The Most Beautiful Bride (Song of Songs 6:4-12) An Unfaithful Bride (Hosea 1) A Wedding in Cana (John 2:1-12) The Death of a Friend (John 11:38-44) Unit 3 Holy Days The four lessons that conclude this quarter’s study examine the holy days of Passover, celebrating God’s deliverance of the people as recorded in Exodus; and the Feast of Weeks, or Pentecost; the Day of Atonement; and the Festival of Booths, described in Leviticus. Passover (Exodus 12:1-14) Feast of Weeks (Leviticus 23:15-22) Day of Atonement (Leviticus 16:11-19) The Feast of Booths (Leviticus 23:33-43) Based on the Uniform Series, this quarterly study presents stimulating lessons that explore the biblical message and how to apply it to daily life. The curriculum helps adults move from a focus on the Word to reflection on personal, family, church, and community concerns. Ideal for a variety of settings, lessons are Bible-based, Christ-focused, and United Methodist–approved. Book excerpt: Winter theme: Faith in Action Daniel | Matthew | Acts | Ephesians | Colossians | 1 Timothy | James This winter, our lessons explore the twofold nature of faith as belief and action. Selections from Acts show various examples of proclaiming faith in Christ. In the Book of Daniel, we see faith in action as sincere, obedient, bold, and strong. The lessons from several epistles show how our actions as individuals and as communities demonstrate our faith in Christ. The student book writer is Chuck Aaron. The writer for the teacher book is Martha Myre. The Early Church Proclaims Faith in Christ The five lessons in this unit reveal what the early Christian leaders proclaimed about living our faith in Christ. The sessions in Acts report several examples of social welfare ministry and evangelism in spite of opposition. Ephesians teaches about faith that leads to unity in the body of Christ. The Christmas lesson gives an account of the wise men who faithfully searched for the newborn King of the Jews. A Living Faith in God The four lessons in this unit explore faith in action from the Book of Daniel. These lessons provide models for ways to actively engage in behaviors that demonstrate sincerity, obedience, boldness, and strength of faith. Self-Controlled, Upright, and Godly Faith This unit offers four lessons that look at passages from Acts, James, and First Timothy, providing specific examples of faith as belief and action. James teaches that faith without works is dead. The lesson from First Timothy offers instructions about leading others in a life of faith. Book excerpt: Winter Theme: Our Love for God Deuteronomy | Joshua | Psalms | Matthew | Philippians | James Our lessons begin with God's demands for our complete and undivided love as shown in passages from Deuteronomy and Psalms. They proceed with our response to God's love in the advent of Christ and the Epistles' interpretations of the nature and extent of our responses to God's love in Christ. They conclude with passages from three of the Psalms expressing glorification of God. The student book lesson writer is Stan Purdum; the writer of the lessons in the teacher book is Mark Price. God Commands Our Love, Respect, and Obedience The first unit offers five lessons. The Deuteronomy passage contains a presentation of God's demand for total love and devotion. The lesson from Joshua contains his faithful statement of love and reverence for a liberating God. Our lesson from Psalm 103 reviews David's expressions of love and glorification for God's creative, sustaining, and protective actions. The lesson from Luke portrays the advent of Christ and the human response to God's act of fulfilling the promise. Finally, the text from Matthew challenges us to love God through compassionate works. Loving God by Trusting Christ The quarter's second unit also offers five lessons. Matthew continues to inspire trust in God for all things, while James encourages total submission to God in love. In his letter to the Philippians, Paul gives an interpretation of human devotion to God in Christ; promotes selfless devotion through exemplification of Christ's total submission to God in love; and encourages giving up everything for the sake of one's love for Christ. Love Songs That Glorify God The final unit this quarter offers three lessons from Psalms. Psalm 48 focuses on a song of adoration for God's steadfast love; Psalm 66 focuses on part of a love song of praise to God for mighty works of goodness; and Psalm 91 closes this unit with a praise song for assurance of protection and comfort for those who love God. Several of the lessons highlight calls to service as recorded in the Gospels of Mark and Luke. We explore Paul's call to ministry, with special attention to the Roman church. On Easter Sunday, we examine Matthew's account of the Resurrection. The student book writer is Taylor Mills; the teacher book writer is Gary Thompson. Call to Discipleship Deuteronomy 6:1-9 | Joshua 24:1-3, 13-15, 21-24 | Psalm 103:1-17, 21-22 | Luke 1:26-31; 2:22, 25-35 | Matthew 25:31-46 The first unit offers four lessons and highlights several aspects of what it means to be called by Jesus as a disciple. They include hospitality, counting the cost, reaching the lost, and salvation for all people. Call to Ministry 2 Thessalonians 3:1-5; 2 John 4–11 | James 4:1-10 | Philippians 1:12-21 | Philippians 2:1-11 | Philippians 3:7-14 The five lessons in this unit explore the diverse ways in which Jesus' disciples were challenged to exercise their call to ministry: by witnessing to the gospel message; acting with loving kindness; sharing the Resurrection story; and making new disciples through preaching, teaching, and baptism. The Spread of the Gospel Psalm 48:1-3, 9-14 | Psalm 66 | Psalm 91:1-16 The four lessons in this unit begin with Paul's introduction of himself to the Jewish and Gentile Christians living in Rome. Paul affirms that the call to salvation is to Israel and to Gentiles. This call to salvation is a call to a life in the Spirit and involves a new life in Christ. Through the visionary images of the authors of Isaiah, Hebrews, and Revelation, we come to see more clearly the sovereign nature of God. The quarter begins with a study of Isaiah's rich images of God as the one who rules the whole universe. In the Letter to the Hebrews, we see how God comes to lead humankind in the person of Jesus. The Revelation of John offers the vision of God as the beginning and end of all things. The student book writer is Simon Iredale; Bob Walker is the writer for the teacher book. Sovereignty of God The four lessons in this unit explore how the prophet Isaiah viewed the reign of God over the whole world as a peaceful kingdom, a mountain of God, the foundations of the earth, and in a new and everlasting covenant. Sovereignty of Jesus This five-lesson unit looks at the images of the reign of the resurrected Christ from the Letter to the Hebrews. These lessons help us understand Jesus as the imprint of God, the owner of a household, the great high priest, a priest forever, and the pioneer and perfecter of our faith. Alpha and Omega This unit develops four lessons based on the last two chapters of the Book of Revelation. John used metaphors of one who makes all things new, a vision of a New Jerusalem, a river of life, and the beginning and the end of all things to explore how God reigns. Book excerpt: Summer theme: Justice in the New Testament Matthew | Luke | 2 Corinthians | Colossians This summer, our lessons focus on justice as presented in the New Testament. Justice is portrayed as a primary characteristic of God's nature. Human beings are called to emulate God's justice toward one another. The writer for the student book is Randy Cross; the writer for the teacher book is David Mosser. God Is Just and Merciful The four lessons in this unit remind us that human interpretations of the Law must not conflict with mercy and justice as acted out in our daily lives. The lessons from Matthew look at conflicts between Jesus and the Pharisees on questions of mercy and justice. The lesson from Luke looks at how God dispenses justice and mercy. Jesus Calls for Justice and Mercy The five lessons in this unit explore Jesus' teachings on God's justice in Matthew and Luke. Included is Jesus'; demand for leaders to practice justice as well as to understand the universality of God's justice and mercy. Paul Teaches About New Life in Christ Paul's teachings about just and merciful behaviors from 2 Corinthians and Colossians are the focus of the four lessons in this unit. Those who live the new life in Christ are called to imitate God's just and merciful nature through their actions toward others, including their enemies. Book excerpt: Fall theme: Covenants With God Genesis | Exodus | Numbers | 1 Samuel | 2 Samuel | Nehemiah | Jeremiah | Ezekiel | 1 Corinthians | Titus This fall, lessons in Adult Bible Studies follow the theme, "Covenants With God" and consider the major covenants God made with people on behalf of the earth and the human community. Beginning with Noah, God promised benevolence toward creation. God made similar commitments with Abram, Phinehas, and Ezekiel. Ultimately, the covenant forms the foundation for the coming Messiah and salvation for the world. The student book writer is Rosanne Osborne. The writer for the teacher book is Tim Bryan. Signs of God's Covenants The four lessons in this unit, drawn from Genesis and Ezekiel, celebrate four signs of God’s covenant. Promising to renew the cycle of seasons, God created the rainbow as a permanent reminder of the covenant with every living thing. Circumcision was the sign of the covenant with Abraham, and the sabbath was the sign of the covenant with Israel at Mount Sinai. The last sign is the Spirit-filled heart. Called Into Covenant With God This five-lesson unit looks at the images of the reign of the resurrected Christ from the Letter to the Hebrews. These lessons help us understand Jesus as the imprint of God, the owner of a household, the great high priest, a priest forever, and the pioneer and perfecter of our faith. An Everlasting Covenant The final unit this quarter develops four lessons, drawn from Numbers, 1 Samuel, Jeremiah, Hebrews, and 1 Corinthians. These lessons examine the components of the covenant God made with the priest, Phinehas, and the divine promise to Israel through the prophet Jeremiah. The unconditional divine promises were to maintain a perpetual priesthood, forgive the unfaithful, and establish a new covenant with Israel. God sealed this covenant of pure grace through Christ as mediator and by writing the Law in the hearts of God's people. Additional information about Adult Bible Studies, Winter 2022-2023 Theme: Power and Love This winter, our Bible lessons follow the theme “Power and Love.” The lessons first challenge us to try to understand Scripture, particularly the Nativity accounts, from the position of vulnerability and powerlessness. They then move to a closer look at what it means to belong to the family of God and culminate in a series of lessons on love and how it informs and changes our relationships. The writer of the student book is Sue Mink. Unit 1 Power and Vulnerability God’s incarnation was into a poor family from a village of no consequence, vulnerable to the whims and machinations of the mighty Roman Empire. While some people reading this Bible study can relate to the poverty and obscurity, most will read it as citizens of a great world power. Some people know from experience that power can be abused even against a government’s own citizens, but others have known only the protection and benefits of that power. These lessons invite us to read the Nativity stories from the vantage point of the victims of empire. Scriptures: Judges 9:1-15; Matthew 1:1-25; Matthew 2:1-12; Matthew 2:13-15 Spiritual Practice: Acts of Mercy Unit 2 Power and Belonging The lessons in this unit follow the trajectory of biblical imagery for faith development from adoption through baptism and infancy in faith, into youthful excitement and exuberance, and then to a mature faith that struggles, challenges, and questions. Scriptures: Galatians 3:23—4:7; Luke 15:11-32; John 17:1-24 and Ephesians 4:14; Colossians 3:12-17; Matthew 22:1-14 Spiritual Practice: Rule of Life Unit 3 The Power of Love One of the distinct traits of biblical theology is the emphasis on God’s hesed (“lovingkindness”) and Jesus’ selfless love. In the early twentieth century, a great deal of ink was spilled trying to distinguish agápe love by which we become channels of God’s love from philía, friendship in which reciprocity is important, and éros, a passionate sort of love. Recent scholarship finds that Greek and biblical thought blurs the lines of agápe and philía and finds a greater emphasis on relationships. While we should enact our love without thoughts of personal gain, the ultimate goal of loving our enemies is becoming their friend. Scriptures: 1 John 4:7-21 and Ruth 4; 1 Kings 3:16-28; 1 Samuel 18:1-4, 19:1-7, 20; Matthew 16:21-28 Spiritual Practice: Spiritual Friendship Other Adult Bible Study components, sold separately, include: Teacher/Commentary Kit The Kit includes a Teacher Book and a Concise Commentary that are both supplementary and complementary to the Adult Bible Studies student book The Teacher Book provides small-group leaders, teachers, and facilitators with additional biblical background and exposition and suggestions for guiding group discussion. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: As the result of your feedback, beginning with the winter quarter (December-February) and continuing with the spring (March-May), we will post each lesson’s Focal Bible Passages from the Common English Bible (CEB) on www.adultbiblestudies.com for easy downloading. It will also be linked in the AdultBibleStudies.com Newsletter each week. Beginning with the summer quarter (June-August), the Focal Passages will again appear in print in both the Student and Teacher books. We will mostly use the CEB version of the text, while sometimes including the New Revised Standard Version (NRSV) when it will better help students engage and appreciate the biblical texts. Winter Theme: Promise Genesis | Hebrews | Isaiah|Matthew | Acts | Ruth | 2 Samuel | Jeremiah | Exodus This winter, our lessons support the theme of "Promise." The writer of the student book lessons is Michelle Morris. Hope The five lessons in this unit center on one of the things promise gives us: hope. Hope––the expectation that, regardless of what is happening in the present, God has a good future for us––is an underlying and uniting theme in these lessons. Lesson 1 follows Abraham, who left his homeland and moved to Canaan, trusting that God had something good ahead for him. Lesson 2 recalls how Abraham's trust that God was going to give him a place as an inheritance motivated him to make the move. Lesson 3, based on one of the servant songs from Isaiah, speaks of the hope of a servant who "will bring justice to the nations" (Isaiah 42:1). Lesson 4 focuses on the angel's announcement to Joseph that Mary would bear God's Son, declaring that Jesus is the fulfillment of "God with us." Lesson 5 looks at Jesus' final words to his disciples before ascending into heaven, planting in them the hope of the Holy Spirit's coming and the reality of Spirit-filled living. Spiritual Practice: Scripture Covenants: The Basis for Committed Relationships The four lessons in this unit focus on covenants and the promises they include. God's covenant with Abram, Ruth's covenant with Naomi, God's covenant with David, and God's new covenant announced through Jeremiah and extended to us remind us of God's faithfulness in keeping promises. Spiritual Practice: Anam Cara (Soul Friend) Holiness Expressed The four lessons in this unit call us to live into the promise God gives us to be holy people. Holiness, a primary attribute of God, is also present in the world God has created; these lessons invite us to look at holiness in four of the ways in which it is expressed: holy place, holy presence, holy people, and holy purpose. Spiritual Practice: Works of Justice Published quarterly, each week's student book lesson features key verses, reliable and relevant biblical explanation and application, and more. Now, in response to feedback, we are introducing new features and benefits for students including: A comprehensive Bible study plan with more flexibility in terms of Scripture selection and topics. Observation of the church seasons, including Advent and Lent. Suggestions for developing spiritual practices (prayer, confession, worship, mindfulness, solitude, community, hospitality, neighboring, service, and celebration). One font size in the student edition to accommodate all readers. No printed Scripture text allowing you to choose your own Bible translation.
