Book excerpt: The present book on adoption of Improved Chulha by Rural Families is a part of doctoral research study conducted in Gujarat. The study mainly concentrated on adoption level of improved chulhas constructed in the villages on subsidy basis by government and NGOs under National programme on Improved Chulha. The Technical Backup Support Unit (TBSU) established under NPIC at Home Management Department which caters to the needs of NPIC in Gujarat State and Union Territories of Daman-Diu and Dadra Nagar and Haveli developed pottery/ceramic liners for chulhas which were installed since 1991-92 in different parts of Gujarat State by Panchayat and Rural Housing Development Department, the department of Government of Gujarat and nodal agencies like Gujarat Energy Development Agency. Hence this research study was taken up to answer questions like problems faced by families in procuring fuel for cooking, awareness level of the women about scarcity of cooking fuel, management practices in cooking and fuel use, level of participation in NPIC, extent of adoption of MC in daily cooking and factors account for differential levels of adoption of chulha. It has also probed into association between extent of adoption of MC and selected situational, personal and family variables of beneficiaries of NPIC.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: How do policymakers, businesses and civil society in India approach the challenge of climate change? What do they believe global climate negotiations will achieve and how? And how are Indian political and policy debates internalizing climate change? Relatively little is known globally about internal climate debate in emerging industrializing countries, but what happens in rapidly growing economies like India’s will increasingly shape global climate change outcomes. This Handbook brings together prominent voices from India, including policymakers, politicians, business leaders, civil society activists and academics, to build a composite picture of contemporary Indian climate politics and policy. One section lays out the range of positions and substantive issues that shape Indian views on global climate negotiations. Another delves into national politics around climate change. A third looks at how climate change is beginning to be internalized in sectoral policy discussions over energy, urbanization, water, and forests. The volume is introduced by an essay that lays out the critical issues shaping climate politics in India, and its implications for global politics. The papers show that, within India, climate change is approached primarily as a developmental challenge and is marked by efforts to explore how multiple objectives of development, equity and climate mitigation can simultaneously be met. In addition, Indian perspectives on climate negotiations are in a state of flux. Considerations of equity across countries and a focus on the primary responsibility for action of wealthy countries continue to be central, but there are growing voices of concern on the impacts of climate change on India. How domestic debates over climate governance are resolved in the coming years, and the evolution of India’s global negotiation stance are likely to be important inputs toward creating shared understandings across countries in the years ahead, and identify ways forward. This volume on the Indian experience with climate change and development is a valuable contribution to both purposes.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The first comprehensive political science account of energy poverty, arguing that governments can improve energy access for their citizens through appropriate policy design. In today's industrialized world, almost everything we do consumes energy. While industrialized countries enjoy all the amenities of modern energy, more than a billion people in the developing world still lack energy access. Why is energy poverty persistent in some countries and not in others? Offering the first comprehensive political science account of energy poverty, Escaping the Energy Poverty Trap explores why governments have or have not been able to lead in providing modern energy to their least advantaged citizens. Focusing on access to modern cooking fuels and household electrification, the authors develop a new political-economic theory that introduces government interest, institutional capacity, and local accountability as key determinants of energy access. They draw on case studies from India, East Asia, Africa, and Latin America to offer the optimistic conclusion that governments can improve institutional capacity and local accountability through appropriate policy design. Energy poverty is a policy problem, the authors assert, and engaging with it as such offers new opportunities not only for ensuring equal energy access, but also for political, economic, and environmental development.
