Book excerpt: The major aim of this dissertation was to assess the utility of general social strain theory (Agnew 1992) in explaining substance use among Black, Hispanic, and White adolescents. In terms of my outcome variable, I examined a cumulative measure of substance use, marijuana use, and alcohol use separately. Data were analyzed from wave three of the Project on Human Development in Chicago Neighborhoods (2000-2002). This study explored how under-researched race/ethnic-related social strains such as racial discrimination and general forms of strain such as witnessing violence, physical and verbal victimization affected adolescent substance use. In addition, I examined two important mediating negative affective states, depression and fear. Finally, and in accordance with social strain theory, the moderating effects of parental social support and religion were also included in my statistical analysis. Statistical analysis was primarily composed of path analysis using full information parameter estimates. With respect to fear as a negative affective state, results indicated that reporting fear decreased substance use among adolescents while depression had no significant effect. Other findings indicate that racial discrimination, witnessing violence, and being the victim of verbal bullying indirectly affected alcohol and marijuana use as separate constructs through fear. Physical victimization was the only social strain that had a direct positive effect on marijuana and alcohol use. Social support and religion had a direct negative effect on alcohol and marijuana use. As respondents report higher rates of social support and religious participation, respondents reported less substance use. However, social support and religion did not moderate the relationship between social strains and substance use as theoretically expected. Finally, the sample was separated into three race/ethnic categories: African American, Hispanic, and White. The results revealed that social strains may be operating differently for Hispanics and African Americans compared to Whites. In the Hispanic model fear mediated the relationship between discrimination and verbal bullying but not in the African American and White models. Hispanic respondents reported more depression, engaged in more marijuana use but not more alcohol use. These findings reveal that under-researched ethnic/race based social strains and processes should be considered in future studies.

Book excerpt: This dissertation tests the ability of four rival criminological theories to explain adolescent substance use: differential association/social learning theory, social bond theory, self-control theory, and general strain theory. Special attention is paid to whether the theories are general, as the inventors of the theories claim, or gender-specific to males, as critics of the theories claim. To undertake this theoretical assessment, a secondary analysis was conducted using data from the Rural Substance abuse and Violence Project (RSVP). The respondents, drawn from grades 7 to 12, were pooled across four waves. The N for this study is 9,488. The empirical test revealed three main conclusions. First, measures of the components of differential association/social learning theory, social bond theory, self-control theory, and general strain theory were able to explain substance use among adolescents. Second, the theories had general effects across males and females and thus were not gender-specific. Third, because all perspectives earned some empirical support, they might best be seen not as theoretical rivals but as complementary theories that all contribute to our understanding of the sources of substance use among youths. However, given the modest amount of variation explained in the analyses, future research on substance use may benefit from two extensions. First, most studies, including this dissertation, operationalize only parts of theories. The next generation of empirical tests should seek to measure all components of the major theories, thus truly assessing the models' explanatory potential. Second, a truly complete theory of substance use must build upon but not be limited to the major perspectives. Therefore, a need exists to examine the causal impact of factors--such as those unique to women or biological traits that shape conduct from childhood onward--that lie outside the traditional theories of crime.

Book excerpt: Using an integrated theoretical model drawing from Agnew's general strain theory and Pearlin's stress-process models, this study sought longitudinal associations between stressful events, and three outcome measures: depression, illicit substance use, and polysubstance use. Previous research highlights the co-occurring or comorbid roles of depression and substance use, particularly among adolescents and those transitioning into adulthood. Relatedly, the literature suggests gender socialization is instructive in the analysis of adolescent depression, but less related to substance use, while substance use is better understood through a lens accounting for racial differences and those related to the salient social context of poverty and urbanicity. Data for this dissertation were drawn from five waves (2002, 2004, 2006, 2008, and 2010) of interview data from the National Longitudinal Survey of Youth (1997) consisting of 16,868 person-waves constructed from 6,392 adolescents enrolled in the study. Using a temporal ordering data analysis technique, stressful events from a previous interview wave were utilized as explanatory variables in predicting current depression and substance use. Other variables in the analysis, like social support, were believed to be acting contemporaneously to reduce depression and substance use. Using generalized least squares regression (GLS) for panel data for depression and generalized estimating equations (GEE) for panel data in STATA for the dichotomous substance use outcomes, results indicated that stressful events measured in the past were significantly associated with current depression, and with current substance use, controlling even for prior depression and substance use. Results also indicated that social support exerts a protective effect against the strain-depression and strain-substance use relationship. Race-specific and gender-specific modeling of each outcome demonstrated marked differences among relevant factors, with gender-specific models better explaining depression, and race-specific models better predicting substance use. Moderation analysis of relevant predictors and these key social statuses indicated that several salient and significant differences existed among the effects of the explanatory variables. Theoretical and policy contributions from this study are related to empirical support for the inclusion of depression as a negative affective state in general strain theory, while also reflecting important social structural conditions, like poverty, in predicting these relationships.

Adolescent crime and especially drug use is an important yet poorly studied subject in Turkey. Of the many correlates of youth drug use, strain as asserted by the General Strain Theory of Agnew (1985) is chosen as the main explanatory variable in this research. Using Youth in Europe (YIE) survey data administered to a representative sample of high school students in Istanbul City, correlates of marijuana, LSD, amphetamine and ecstasy use among adolescents are analyzed in this study. The logistic regression analyses reveal that, as hypothesized, strain operationalized by the negative life events experienced and having been exposed to physical violence, significantly affect drug use. In order to enhance our understanding of this significance and measure the magnitude of the effect controlling for the effect of other explanatory variables, Post simulation developed and advised by Long and Freese (2006) is used.
